It isn't that he's not a great player - he clearly is. It isn't that he cannot function in a 4-5-1 as clearly he can. (Although 4-5-1 isn't the best formation for us because of the lack of appropriate striker). However, it's clear that VDV isn't hitting the heights that he did at the start of the season. There's a few potential reasons for that: he might not have regained full match fitness since coming back from injury; he didn't have a proper pre-season so his general fitness level is down and perhaps he is just doing what Teddy Sheringham did a bit too often and is trying to win games by himself, hence dropping too deep which he's done a lot recently.

Sorry, if you are getting all rolly at me, Nic, I'm serious...VDV was blowing quite heavily from early on, so far as I could see. I don't think he is fit.

Not you, the attitude that seems to be growing against VDV. Yes he isn't as fit as some, but complaining about his form and calling him the problem is just ridiculous.

Its just a fitness issue...he was bright for the first half, but faded badly in the second.

24 shots today, 9 of them on target. Would a return to 4-4-2 create more chances? Would it improve our finishing?

In this instance, I have to agree.
I kinda felt like VDV was dropping deep...but there is certainly no arguing with the number of chances we created.
That suggests that our problem is not converting chances (and therefor, our tactics), but converting them (and therefor, the quality of our finsihing).

Oh, how they laughed in the Summer when I said we would be fine creating chances but needed someone who didn't nothing but score, like Huntelaar:duh:

Fcuk's sake their is a lot of gumf on this thread. He is clearly not match sharp at the moment, their is only one way he can get it - a run of games.

We all know that we don't have the ideal man to lead the line with Rafa operating behind as well, but he is a world class operator that has scored and made goals in four different leagues around the world now.

I dont get some of you guys. We are clearly creating the same amount of chances as we did before.

4-4-2, 4-5-1 - I dont think the first formation would have created us that many more chances yesterday. We just need people to actually get the ball in the net.

One that wanted lots of goals might prefer him, don't you think?

For instance?

Man U? Chelsea? Real? Barcelona? Inter?

Personally, I rate Modric and Bale higher than VDV.

VDV had a great start to his Real career as well, scored a hat-trick in one of his first outings for Madrid and then went a bit flat. I hope he doesn't follow a pattern here.

Great player on his day though, could make the difference against Real. Let's hope so.

The lack of a world class striker is depressing. Pav deserves a run of games, and his movement will complement VDV's game quite well.

VDV doesn't look fit, but when he and Modric link up, it's different gravy, they're a cut above the rest of our players.

I thought vdv and modric had a really good understanding together in midfield.

You do realise we only have two world class players...... and vdv is one of them.

Why is it so hard to understand the argument?

No one is denying he's a top top player.

What we are saying is that at home he plays too deep, turning us into 4-5-1

Our main strikers aren't good enough to play on their own and our midfield doesn't need him doing their jobs for them.

Its a simple matter of keeping him up the field or if he can't discipline himself swap him out to give us two strikers.

Does anyone think we should be playing 4-5-1 at home against bottom 3 teams? Didn't think so...
