The Di Marzio article:

Di Marzio: “Chiriches andrà al Tottenham”

CALCIOMERCATO AS ROMA – Un romeno per il Tottenham. La società inglese infatti sta per chiudere col difensore della Steaua Bucarest Vlad Chiriches, seguito in passato anche dalla Roma.
L’operazione si chiuderà sulla base di 8 milioni di euro, e verrà definita nei prossimi giorni anche nei dettagli. Chiriches vola in Premier League.

Please let this be true. I know nothing of the player, but I'd for us to have someone called Vlad.

Another report suggest Cardiff have bid £7.5m for Caulker and we have accepted. Possibly why Chiriches is supposedly being brought in. #THFC

I don't like the idea of selling Caulker. Would've thought a young CB as a 5th option would be enough in itself with Kaboul's supposed injury problems and Verts current injury.

Yes, Caulker going doesn't make much sense to me. I guess the club is happy with Kab's prognosis for this season anyway and Jan really will be back before Sept if that is true. Bit low tbh.

If the Caulker rumours are true then I would of expected a higher price. Bit of a shame.

Just decided to watch the YT video on the first page, and it looks to me like we're getting CBs who can bring the ball out from defence. Makes a few Dawsonesque blocks, and scores against Chelsea. SIGN HIM UP!

I would rather keep Caulker than buy somebody else. I know some were down on him a bit last year, but I think he's going to be the perfect kind of defender for AVB's defensive line in the long run.

Now I have no issue with both. :D But I can't say I know much about Vlad other than he has a pretty cool name.

I think he's a insurance buy in case Kaboul never fully gets over his injury woes with an eye on his potential at the same time.

I don't mind Caulker going on loan if he wants regular games and Kaboul is going to be fit but we should really not be selling him.

Hm don't know. Unsure about this. It is nearly that amount of money we paid for Vertonghen!? I think big risk that he isn't ready for this level and the Premier League but never seen him play so forget it.........buy him...

If its true that we are shipping off Caulker for this new fella then I have mixed feelings. I'm not a massive Caulker fan, but Spurs have always had a decent crop of English players. Seems we are diluting that:

Chadli > Lennon
Paulinho/Sandro > Parker
Verts > Dawson
Vlad > Caulker

Highlights the sorry state of English football really

Indeed, which is why I'm sceptical tbh. I can see AVB not thinking Caulks will fit in going forward etc, which would be a shame in itself but I'd trust his judgement. The fee though, nah, not with DL at the helm.

Know nothing about him so watched the YouTube montage on first page - I know it's only his best efforts but blimey he does look like a good player - think David luiz but with more pace and skills - no idea about his defending but I assume if we were interested we would have focused on that - could be the perfect cb signing for us and dl will love the price!

To me, the more likely scenario is that Caulker will stay and along with Vlad will be cover for injuries. However, I think buying Vlad would give us scope to sell Naughton and Parker, without buying replacements for both those positions.

Essentially Vlad would be back-up CB, RB and DM and would see a fair amount of game time.

I'm sure it's been covered but I've not been following this thread; does Chirches have history of covering right back by any chance? Ideally I'm still hoping to see Naughton shipped out for a few bob but that's seeming less likely since we sent Smith back to the Championship (extremely disappointed about that). That decision might be a little more palatable to me though if this guy happens to be a right footed Vertonghen (assuming we actually sign him that is).

Edit: Not too happy about this talk of offing Caulker either. He's got a way to go but he's got it in him to be real good player for sure. Central defenders often face some choppy waters in their early 20's before settling down. No way can we give up on him yet.

I guess I could deal with a loan but I'd much rather retain him as fourth choice tbh. I don't feel uncomfortable with him in that role (although I suppose that if Kaboul really is in a Ledley situation now then that complicates things a bit)
