We screwed up

So, here we are. It's October and we're bottom of the league, the only team in the Premiership yet to win a game.

The messageboard is full of justifiably angry fans. Some are blaming Ramos. Some are blaming Levy and Comolli (and some are trying to find a wormhole in space and time so we can prevent Martin Jol being sacked). The nice thing about the DoF set-up is that it creates plenty of muddy water for everyone to wander through - people still have no idea which players were chosen by Ramos and which by Comolli and the circus continues as ever. Personally, I'm increasingly bored by trying to apportion blame; I would say that collectively, as a club, we f*cked up.

Whether it's the board or the manager at fault, we find ourselves bereft of appropriate players, woefully short of confidence, with no visible leaders on the pitch and with players constantly playing out of position. It's hard to believe that just the season before last we finished 5th and were optimistic of pushing Arsenal for 4th. Frankly, my sole aim for the season is now to avoid relegation.

There's no point demanding that Jol be reinstated. He's gone and good luck to him, he's doing very well without us. There's also very little point in demanding that Ramos be sacked if we fail to beat Hull. Furious though I would be if we lost, and skeptical as I am about Ramos, I don't want to see us as a joke club who swap their manager once a year. I wouldn't have sacked Jol and I wouldn't have hired Ramos, but barring relegation I want to see him continue and hopefully prove his worth.

Which leaves most reasonable fans with a whole load of anger and nowhere to put it. It's easy to demonise Levy, but I genuinely think he wants what's best for the club. Calling for his head is easy, but where does it leave us? Does anyone think Newcastle are in a better position for forcing Ashley out? I doubt it. Of course, what really rankles is the fact that having screwed up so horribly, the club just carries on as though nothing is wrong. It will never happen, but it would be very nice to go to the Spurs website and see a massive headline saying: "We're really sorry. We f*cked up big time." But instead we'll get the usual cliches about Ramos having the full confidence of the board and corners being turned, etc.

One of the things that has been on my mind recently is the fact that actually, we pretty much deserve to be bottom of the table. The fans don't deserve the misery, but the club as a whole have mostly behaved like greedy kids who thought that money could buy them happiness. A year ago we had a decent, honest manager who made me proud to be a Spurs fan. But the board put out statements talking of our need for Champions League football. So we sacked Jol and spent a lot of money on a new coach, who would take us into the promised land of the Champions League. We put out press releases left, right and centre, demanding respect. We accuse Man Utd of tapping up Berbatov, but were happy to tap-up Ramos and unsettle Bentley. We wait until the last minute to sell Berbatov, so we can squeeze some extra pennies from Man U. We sell hardworking players like Malbranque and replace with with exotic imports like Modric, assuming that big-names equal instant success. We have looked at the big clubs dining at the Champions League table, licked our lips and bitten off more than we can chew. I always laugh at Newcastle and their delusions of grandeur, but are we really any better? If we do get relegated (and I really hope we don't) then there will be a lot of fans of other clubs cheering us down.

modric as number ten with malbranque in his left mid position would have been tasty.
