Long live DL. Would be interesting to see how much we would have paid for a player we really needed had they been available on a free. Joe Cole is a luxury we could do without, but if the right player becomes available, DL may just have to stretch a tad further to nail him.

well said

if we get a real superstar in, then i think the other players would be more likely to understand a wage differential rather than 'the boy Cole'

even then it's high risk, and i hope we think long and hard about it, maybe sound out the senior players' views

re transfer fees, there we're happy to pay out big amounts, have been for years

and if we need to break the £20m barrier, i'm sure we would if the deal overall was a good 'un

eg muller for £ 20m might be worth it, as long as his wage demands were reasonable, he wanted to join, etc etc

we offered him a good contract and cl-footy but he chose to go somwhere else because they offered more (that they dont have). pool will need to sell Gerrard or Torres to buy new players as they spend to much on wages.
had we paid Cole 90k other key-players would have asked for the same so it could have cost us 200k/week.

I agree with most of the things that you say.....but (and always a but), THFC are STILL a club with too many English players (more the English style)....even after the disaster of the S.Africa WC. It is easy to comment/react AFTER the WC showed English football up for what it is, 2nd class! We are still as far as ever from the CL security (remember that we were sooo close under Jol.....so it should be year 3/4 of the THFC CL journey). We are now, however, facing a new year/season with the best squad in years.....but, so far we are pretty much the same quality as last year? Sandro etc should make a difference.....so let's play that they will! Levi is yet to prove that he can retain our CL Qualification.....but....first things first! COYS!

Too right, get in more foreigners, especially with the new home grown players rule, that's got to be the way forward!

Our offer seemed to have been about 20% less than he was on at Chelsea, so you'd have to reason that Levy wasn't overly impressed with the idea of signing Cole. Levy didn't spare anything when clinching Modric for a record fee, so he's not averse to investing big money in the right player.

I think that sums up most Spurs fans attitude too, we'd have been happy to get him and it would have been a terrific addition to our squad but we aren't desperate for him.

I think someone said that now we are only the same quality as last year but it's worth remembering that we are the same quality that we finished last season with, you know the bit where we whupped the arse off Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City and only blew the Man utd gig through timidity.

But you are talking about a transfer fee in regard to the amont spent on Modric, but actually breaking a wage structure in regard to Cole...the two are miles apart. It has no bearing on any of the players we have now if we pay £30 million for a player. But if their wages are dictated by a strict wage policy and all of a sudden someone comes in whose wage is way above that then, obviously, they ar gonna want to know about it. See the difference?

I'm absolutely sick to death of all of these ridiculous posts/topics questioning Levy in the last week in regards to not paying big wages and why we're not linked to superstars.

I reckon he might know what he's doing considering we're in the Champions League, have state-of-art training facilities on the way, a new stadium in the works and a very very good squad!!!

Further to this the Club operates at a profit (or a very small loss), every other "top" side in the Premier League either operate at a huge loss because they have a filthy rich owner, or are in massive debt. There are plenty examples of what happens when you throw money at players and it not working.

The latest knee-jerk reaction has been caused by Joe Cole choosing Liverpool over us for a reported £90,000 a week! How dare Levy not break our wage structure for someone who hasn't even managed 40 league games in two seasons, especially when we only have no midfielders

We should be extremely proud of how our chairman runs our great club, be delighted with the position he's got us in, trust him and support him!

How dare you talk sense during the kneejerk reaction season, such a common sense post has no place on a football forum, especially at this time of year.:snooty:

Until we have established ourselves as a top 4 club and the extra, not sure of the figures, £20M a season(?) is guaranteed, then Levy only has the option of the current wage structure. For all players, not even an exception, because before you know it that will have to be the norm. Factor in the stadium costs - people will have to be patient for a while longer yet.

What happened to the rumours that clubs operating with massive debts would be turfed out of Europe? They seem to have been buried unfortunately. If it's a choice between the long-term health of Spurs or getting ourselves to the point of going out of business altogether again chasing a dream of short-term succes which is not even guaranteed, then it's a no-brainer.

And hey, we might even qualify for the Cl proper under the current circs. Can't be bad.

massive sigh of relief he went to liverpool, if we really need someone to play off a target man i would much rather we try turn Gio around who in my opinion has massive potential.

the squad is fine as is generally, not exactly short of players, just need a top quality striker as crouch, defoe, keane, pav dont fill me with massive confidence. No thanks to cole though, not many assists and even fewer goals in the last 4 years

Spot on Sir. Never in a million years was Joe Cole worth the reported £90k a week he's getting at the Dippers. Danny boy was right not to pay him that aswell as veto the James deal last season.

We truly have a chairman who does not let his heart rule his head hence put our existence at stake. He should be applauded for this. Long may his and Enic's reign continue if you ask me.....

Great OP but Daniel has made some grave mistakes but has learnt from them (we hope).

I was having a row with my kneejerk mate who was being all despondent today about what Harry wrote in the sun. I explained to him that Harry was just being pragmatic and wishing Cole the best and that there were no hard feelings.

Cole would have been a luxury and for me I couldn't see what improvement he is over Modric or Kranjaer ? His injury record is terrible too.

Our chairman knows that if we don't win the qualifier then we are out of europe full stop for the year. If we do qualify then i'm sure he will push the boat out but with the new stadium, training ground etc whats the point in gambling away your financial security until he knows where we will be when the window shuts. we will also be a far better bet for a player knowing that we are in the Champs league group stages rather than just playing league football all season.

People claim that Cole has chosen Europa league over Champs league. He hasn't. We aren't in the champs league yet and have to win a qualifier to get into Europe at all. Thats the ridiculous aspect of finishing 4th - you have 2 games which you must win on aggregate or you are out of europe all together.

Please wait until we have been drawn for the qualifiers and how we do and then we will see what team we have for the rest of the season (well until Jan window anyway).

My understanding is that if we lose the play-off we go into the Europa league group stage - can anyone confirm?

I'm not sure why Levy's getting stick when we've only missed out on one player. The transfer windows open for another six weeks isn't it?

Probably when the Uefa Cup became the Europa League. I'm 99% sure we're guaranteed to get to the group stages of either the Champions League or the Europa League.

Ignore my comments just seen it on uefa website

The losing team from each of the UEFA Champions League play-off ties will go into the UEFA Europa League group stage

My ignorance means that my last comments are nonsense

Yeah, damn those English players and English style (that got us to 4th place and the CL for the first time ever) to hell!!

I can't find one post of yours that makes sense. You say we have too many English players then follow that up with 'this is our best squad in years'. Then you say this should be our 3rd or 4th year in the CL cos Jol almost got us there? But he didn't. This could've been our 15th year in the CL if Francis had got us there, but he didn't.

.....COYS
