We're on course for 79 points, a PL record for us. Over the last 12 seasons had we attained that total it would have resulted in a finish of:

04-05: 3rd
05-06: 4th
06-07: 3rd
07-08: 4th
08-09: 4th
09-10: 3rd
10-11: 2nd, 1 pt off top
11-12: 3rd
12-13: 2nd
13-14: 4th or 5th depending on GD - likely 4th above Arsenal's +27
14-15: 2nd or 3rd - likely 3rd behind City's +45 GD
15-16: 2nd, 2 pts off top

However imo a points total of that magnitude is more impressive in this than many previous seasons - there is far more depth of quality the whole way down the league as opposed to just a fantastic top 4.
you got nothing to do? ;)

Indeed. The reason why Liverpool do better against the top sides, is because the top sides come out and play and that leaves the room for them to exploit when they turn on the uber press.

Conversely they stuggle against defensive sides who congest the space and sit deep.

The blueprint for this one is so obvious imo. We should set up to contain and frustrate and play on the counter. And we do have the players for it, we can transition quickly when the right passes are executed.
I would agree with this A few years ago, and it would work with the players we had, but we are not a counter attacking team anymore. Maybe we should just press them high up the pitch and wait for their defenders to make errors under pressure which they seem prone to do.

Good to see a bunch of assholes spamming the shit out of this thread again. Really wish the mods would ban in this thread like they do the ITK threads.

From Rawk:

Come on Redmen!!
Spent too much time reading about yesterday. Supporting Liverpool feels hard ATM. This is our sort of game. They will presss the space so we need to be quick of mind and cool in front of goal. Plenty of time for the team to get prepared for the battle. Hope to see Wijnaldum, Lallana and Henderson as our midfield three.

Can and Mignolet to the bench would be a very good start. Given that Spurs aren't complete shit, we'll probably get a result. Importantly, they won't camp 10 men behind the ball, which is a strategy we have literally no answers to.

A team with a competent defence who sit deep and will suffocate out space.

This will be tough.

If I go to the ground against Spurts and Mignolet is in goal, I'm going to save myself the bother and just walk out.

Shittest keeper ever. He's just totally shite.

This is a massive, possibly season defining game, win it and firmly in the mix and will be boosted by some much needed confidence, don't even want to think about the consequences of a defeat. I want to be confident of a win but for me this has score draw written all over it. They are a good defensive unit and have more than enough threat to score a couple. Would like to see Gini come back in for Can, providing more fluidity in midfield and pray that we at least have Klavan available, no idea how long Lovren is out for. I think the attack picks itself, we just need to hope Coutinho can play his way into form.

I thought before the Man Utd and Chelsea fixtures they would likely finish draws. We had enough pride to cancel them out but never the squad or belief to win those games. This next game maybe the one where we get a good hiding and Klopp is forced to start again.

Spurs have the lowest goals against record in league, only letting in 16 goals in 24 games. They're never going to catch Chelsea but they're the only ones with half a chance of doing so. If this fixture was in a month's time the gap between first and second I believe will be wider but for now Pochettino just has to show his players the table.

The motivation of them temporarily going six behind Chelsea next Saturday evening will be us dropping all three points.

A great win for our under 23's against Tottenham before. Woodburn as ever impressed would love to see him get a chance sometime.

Think we've painted ourselves into such a corner here a defeat ends the season. The frustration of having these 'must wins' against the better teams because of losses against the dross is wearing me the fuck down.

1-1 I reckon. wish I could be more positive but it is what it is.

A little time away is perhaps what the doctor ordered.

I see us putting a performance in

However, what I really want to see is change. Drop Can, for instance. There's players I wanna see again, where is Grujic? I also feel it is time to give Sturridge a few starts.

I am eager to see what Klopp changes, I expect to see a refreshed intensity, and Spurs being on our level, I expect us to take the game to them.

There is plenty to work on, but I think we are a confidence team this season. A win is a perfect confidence booster

They seem to have lost a lot of the delusion recently, aside from the poster saying they beat us with their U23 side earlier in the season. Big game and they're not overly confident.

You've misconstrued that one. Their u23s genuinely did beat ours on Sunday.

I thought he meant when they beat us in the league cup like they played a young team and we didn't.

I've been outdone by Rawk, truly rockbottom.
Don't sweat it, that's how I understood it too as I was unaware of Sundays game!

I'm not sure we're short of the mark - we could well finish with a points total that would win a title in many previous seasons, Chelsea are performing something quite remarkable under Conte though, that's the nub of it.
Good points.

It would be wrong to go to Anfield thinking 'they're having a tough spell, lets play our normal game and we'll win'. I'd much rather take the following into account

1. LFC's impressive performance at WHL earlier in the season, which countered our normal game better than anyone else
2. Our struggle @ City who adopted a similar pressing style as I expect LFC to play
3. LFC's struggles recently vs sides who sit deep
4. Absence of Rose and Vertonghen which makes us vulnerable to pressing and counter attacks

All of that should point to us adopting a counter attacking approach

Idealistically you're 100% right, that's absolutely what we should do, but for all of Poch's great strengths he is not the most flexible for such a macro switch in tactics. Would be very surprised to see him deviate from a plan which is working.

Will be interesting to see though if Poch could add this to his strategum/skill set, especially as he learns more and develops in his English ability. IMO, I think it'd be the last crucial piece needed to making him one of the modern managerial greats.

Has Pochettino in his 2.5 seasons here ever set out to cede possession to the other team? Genuine question; I don't recall him doing so.

his first visit to the emirites, were chadli scored early and we nearly hung on for the win. it was kaboul's last good game for us and ryan mason's pl debut.

oddly i really liked that season even thou i now understand why a good team simply cannot have a midfield duo of Mason and Bentaleb. But the Chelsea 5-3 and Arsenal game at home are two of the most thrilling games a spurs fan could ever watch, and really set a good enjoyable tone to watching this side develop into the side it is today.

I didn't mean the season as a whole, but the early parts of Poch's reign.
