It’s the mindset of fans mate, we are the same, we have won absolutely nugget all in that time, so to claim we are a big four/big 6 or whatever when we are the only team never to win anything - is more than likely the reason why clubs such as villa (who have a massive history) consider why - pretty logical to me really 🤷🏻‍♂️
I always thought the big 4 and big 6 was talked about in regards to league position. It was the big 4 because it was often the same 4 at the top and then it became more mixed among the top 6. Since we've finished in the top 6 a lot over the last 15 years we've earned that tag. In terms of trophies at the top level not many teams actually win them. Not 6 teams for sure. The big teams for trophies would be Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Utd and Arsenal. Utd and arsenal haven't won much for the last decade either (Leicester has probably won as much).

Again, that’s just our view of the world, to others just there but not done anything with it.

I don’t disagree with you say though in the slightest, I always looked at the top four from a financial point of view, as it went hand in hand with winning.
All just a different way of seeing things really.

I just find it a tad embarrassing to read the snippets here like, who do villa fans think they are comparing ourselves to us, then moan that the likes of Liverpool or city or even Arsenal, United, Chelsea say the same thing about us…

we’ve won absolutely nothing in that time we’ve been closing the gap, the teams around us win all the time, even United in recent years

We may have not won anything but we have been closer to that top level on a more consistent basis than the likes of Villa are to our level of breaking the top 4 (possibly 5). Villa want to break into the top 4, they didn't even do it last season. I commend Villa on getting into Europe after the Gerrard crap, but they are not on our level after one season of finishing above us. That's why we look down on them. Until they do it regularly enough, we are above them and have been for years. We are who they, Everton and West Ham etc want to be. The ones to break into the top/big four on a consistent basis, winning things or not.

I guess it's because neither side has won anything for a long time and we've actually won more this century. Yet we've been in the CL several times and Europe a lot prior to this season. I agree though that we shouldn't dismiss a team like Villa who have a rich history of trophies. We'll be the first to bring up our own history of trophies when arguing our own case afterall. The sport moves so fast and you're pretty much judged on what you do now or what have you done lately. We finished 4th one season and felt great and then 8th with Villa, Newcastle and Brighton above us. So we can't take anything for granted. Villa are doing great now so fair play to them. Whether they can maintain that level is the big challenge though.

Were I a Villa fan I'd be quite bullish too. Against our first choice XI it would have been a good game, but against what we currently have they are the favourites. Our press has been nullified by the changes to our back line and our midfield is several levels below what it was a few weeks ago. We're all praying that Bentancur will come in and save us when the reality is that he's slowly being brought up to speed after spending 9 months our with a serious injury.

All of this without even considering how Emery has Villa playing and that aside from Mings they have near enough a full strength squad to choose from. I'd be surprised if we came away with a point tbh.

I'm baffled at some of these mid table clubs' fans having one half decent season and getting on their high horse. Were we that prickish when we started to kick on under Jol?

Such a shame its not strongest XI vs strongest XI, their away form is poor and if we had a clean slate personel wise we would give them a seeing to. But we havent, so we wont.

I don't blame the Villa fans at all for their optimism because they've been flying recently, they have a decent squad and a good manager.
Really don't feel the need to have a pop at them for getting excited and dreaming big, isn't that what football's all about?

Yes, we've been the more "successful" club in terms of league position and European qualification but they are a club on the rise and even if they are getting a bit carried away, I'm not going to begrudge them that because it wasn't that long ago that we were in their position.

For this game, they can smell blood in the water so I can't blame them for being bullish.

Agree. But it does make me hope that we smash them 😂

Teams competing in the CL final over the past 20 years are all in the top four of their respective leagues, when Villa can do that then their fans might have a point.

The conversation wasnt about winning things lol.

It was about finishing positions, and we have finished in the top 4 regularly for the last decade and that isnt undermined because we havent won anything....

Despiste your attempts to do exaxtly that 😉
I’m not undermiming anything, explained my reasoning, it’s embarrassing lambasting other clubs when we cry about the same thing when the bigger clubs say it about us - we haven’t won anything and until we do, we’ll always be a laugh to those teams.

would rather see us winning than getting close, personally I’d prefer a trophy over a reasonable league position.

m wasn’t long ago there was a discussion as to why so many other fans dislike spurs - this is one of the reasons

The conversation was about finishing positons, not winning things.

You brought up the winning stuff, even the Villa fans quoted wernt referring to winning things.

In terms of finishing positions, we've been well ahead of them, consistently, for years.

Fucking hell, thats not lambesting them for pointing that out, its a fact.

But the way they talk youd think it was the other way round, off the back of one half decent season.
