whether people want JJ in the team or not - there is no need to be rude to our vice-captain -

I knew this thread would augment my ignore list and it hasn't disappointed

Finally decide what his strengths are and play to them, see if he can deliver consistently. IMO that's getting in the box to support the strikers, or striker, because it's a fat lot of good Bent or Pavlyuchenko winning balls in the air if no-one's there to challenge for the knock-down. Even Shearer noticed that last Sunday—and we had something very similar happening with England last night.

Personally I'd sell JJ and Zokora and buy in a good DM

Easier said than done. The offers don't seem to have been flooding in for them over the summer!

I think his best position would be within a 5 man midfield or in a 442 but alongside a 'good' DM - that way he could get forward without having to always think about immediately getting back should the move break down.

isnt he english? so we shouldnt really expect the next step up really!

O' Hara has stepped up well, and Thud will be instrumental once again.

i can see both of them at west ham next season,

having said that, would make you wonder why zoko got a new contract.

well unless they were 'silly money' offers it would have been pointless as JJ and Zoko are clearly very much part of JR's plans - and both have been first team fixtures under him -and continue to be so - whether that will change soon I know not - I doubt it personally in JJ's case at least, hence the bets I was offering all summer that JJ would start more games than lennon or dos santos

to be fair i thier premier league experience is handy! Jenas more so, as he has been around in the league for longer, but i think zokora has a wicked personality, and that can sometimes be a very good factor for the team.

JJ is one of those players, play him at a wigan, hull city, or blackburn rovers, and he will look like a midfield powerhouse worker. Up and down, up and down, tackling, supporting the attack and chip in with the odd goal.

Play him at spurs and he looks distinctly average 70% of the time, with some stand out energetic performances every now and again. His problem is consistency, but JJ is a good solid player and although he may look like having an influence on the team he is one of those players that quietly helps the team, many of you will ask how?

But it is something you will realise when he is NOT in the team. He is a worker, and he does provide energy, and he can support the attack and score goals.

He is not great at one thing, or poor at another, JJ is someone who is equally average at every midfield charecteristic. Whilst Modric is great playmaking and supporting the attack and Zokora is seemingly "better" at covering and being the hold up player, JJ is someone who will carry out every task to a suitable standard, but none will be extremely great or poor.

------Zokora------
Jenas-------Modric

On paper would be an seemingly perfect midfield with an almost perfect balance, but that needs to be transferred onto the pitch, a point at stamford bridge is a good start.

Because we have Bale, BAE, Gilberto, dos Santos and O'Hara (who is, if you want to split hairs, a LCM, but you get the picture)? We don't have an out-and-out-LW, but that's all we need to complete the Happy Families set. Our alleged interest in Capel suggests we had one in mind, but is one strictly necessary, or just a nice-to-have-but-not-strictly-essential luxury?

Compare our left-sided options now to what we had two or three seasons ago (Davids, Tainio, Reidy or Wigan's reserve LB and Sampdoria's current bench-warmer) or even last season, when Steed finally learned to distinguish the left touchline from the centre circle, and we've got an embarrassment of riches.

Exactly - hence my post wondering why Flatters has chosen not to use anyone there!

For me our midfield looks so much better when Hudd plays in it. He is as close to a replacement for Carrick as we are likely to find but I do prefer him when he comes further forward as he can play the killer ball. Jenas should be able to interchange with him just as he did with Carrick. In a 4-5-1 the 5 for me would be Hudd, Jenas and Modric, flanked by Bentley or Lennon and Bale or dos Santos or perhaps O'hara. Not sure where Corluka fits in. In a 4-4-2 it is tough to see how both Modric and Jenas fit in as Jenas is no DM unless Jenas plays wide which I don't much like.

Agree on Hudd.

Saw a statistic recently as well, which showed that with hudd in the team we dont often lose many games.

I like Rackybears Signiture team, then if Zok drops on form we can push Corluka across or Hudd. Im guessing most of us have played some form of football before, I think what we really need is a settled midfield you play so much better after playing with the same guys for a few games and you keep improving and after the Chelsea game you would hope that the guts stays the same. (unless of course we have bought Corluka to play defensive mid and link up with Modric, if thats the case my post is pointless :) )

For the record i watched the Chelsea game after reading all your guys reports and thought Jenas didn't play that badly. Zok was the best midfielder on the pitch with the rest pretty even (Deco started great but really struggled in 2nd half)
