Drop Modric and use JJ as the attacking midfielder.

Do you have a reason for that decision? When he gets on the ball in my opinion he is fantastic. He has been off the pace so far but there have been glimpses of class. I think we need to give him more time, but others will clearly disagree.

IOMLS I must say that after your suggestion of JJ at Left Mid, he looked pretty useful there last night - I do think he can make use of his pace to drive in to the centre or even get round the outside. As such, as you said, he could probably work there to balance the midfield with Modric at the top of a double pivot.

JJ's versatility is a big asset.

When JJ only plays as an attacking midfielder he is excellent IMO. He suffers the Spurs curse where we never play people to their strengths.

I knew before he kicked a ball for us that Modric was a stupid pointless signing.

I'd much prefer Modric on the left than Jenas.

That was my belief too - but can see the attractions of JJ there - so much depends who else is playing and where

eg Million - fair play to your team :) - but to me Bent has to start instead of gds on monday (fitness etc permitting)

Exactly. To say that after just 3 competitive games is stupid. Berbatov didn't look great in the first several weeks of his Spurs career. But it doesn't help when Modric doesn't play alongside a defensive midfielder. We just end up with the Gerrard and Lampard scenario (i'll be interested to see what happens when Gerrard returns now, but thats another subject) and we wont get the best out of Luka. He played much better against Chelsea, especially in the second half. His best work is in the opposition half, but he cant always play there if he plays alongside Jenas as thats where Jenas is at his best aswell. I'm hoping to see the 5 man midfield continue from Sunday weeks game with Zokora in there with both Modric and Jenas. But Modric looks to be the most gifted midfielder we have so why anyone would have doubs about him, is beyond me.

I think for Sunday i would only really change Hutton for Zokora (from my sig team,) moving Corluka in at right back and Zokora centre midfield. So effectively the same team that played Chelsea but with Corluka in for Gunter. I'd start with Pavyluchenko on the bench as Bent will be a bit fresher and he's less of a risk right now. Plus, after his goal against Chelsea, he could start scoring again. Then its super Pav from the bench to score the winner, 2-1 to Spurs :)

Yeah, cos thats worked so well in the past!

How anyone can be a jj fan is beyond me. What does he do? He is just stupidly overrated imo.

The problem with him is that he does not perform a defined and specific function within a team. He does many things but none of them well enough to say that that is his job.

Please someone show me th error of my ways, I just don't see it, at all.

I agree with this. JJ is ok at everything, but great at nothing. He's very fit, but that is to be expected of a Premiership footballer. I'd rather have Huddlestone next to him personally if we were to play a 442.

At the moment I'd play like this:

-------------------Gomes----------------

-Corluka-----Woody----King------Bale----

----------Huddlestone---Modric-----------

--Bentley----------------------Gio/Lennon-

---------------Pav---Bent----------------

I'd be very tempted to drop a striker, put Zokora in alongside Huddlestone and push Modric up behind Pav/Bent, and I think thats how we would be playing if we'd got Arshavin, but with Modric in the deeper role and Arshavin supporting the ST.

How about 2 top 5 finishes? With JJ as the attacking midfielder and Carrick or Zok defending/playmaking?

That left side is so stripped of any defensive quality it is criminal.

How can you KNOW that?

If we build a midfield around JJ will never get anywhere.

Like I said. Top 5. Twice. And JJ played in almost all of those games as an attacking midfielder.

We only needed one more place to get 4th. JJ is not the problem.

I think he plays "box to box" as everyone calls it. He is more attack minded, but he certainly isn't just an attacking midfielder.

Very true. Alot of people think Modric would be wasted on the left but I think it may well work, similarly to how Davids and Tainio did when we finished 5th twice in a row.

-------------------Gomes----------------

----------Huddlestone---Zokora-----------

--Bentley------------------------Modric--

---------------Pav---Bent/Gio------------

I think I've just changed my mind. This looks more solid than my previous line-up.

JJ has been with us three seasons - all of those seasons have been good seasons - for many reasons of course but JJ is one of them and a constant at that

JJ is arguably our best goalscoring midfielder though. Maybe Bentley but time will tell. But with a shortage of strikers, especially in Europe, he is going to prove to be very important for us this season. I think we'll play a 5 man midfield a lot too, and Modric is more of a creator than a scorer, so we'll need JJ to break into the box and get in on the goals. He's 1 of few midfielders we have who is capable of double figures. And i'll always remember his late equaliser against Arsenal when we drew 2-2 at home, and of course his display in the 5-1 thrashing.

Yeah i like that line up better. Giovani will be better as the number 10, and Modric played out on the left for Zagreb. But i'd still have JJ in place of Huddlestone in there.
