What will become of Pav...

Learn from Drogba. He was baited for 2 years as a dud, a lemon who wasn't up to the standard of the premiership. Look at the boy go now. Patience goes a long way when it comes to talent.

Pav needs to be involved and i hate to think (though i do suspect) that Harrys love affair with the Lamppost might prevent that happening, even if Pav's in good form. My confidence was bouyed slightly by the news that he was intending to use Long in the Hull match but kept Keane as he's on form instead, but the one thing that has worried me from the very first rumour we were going to sign the twig-beast is this slightly odd obsession Twitchy has with the lad.

Pav has a lot of talent, he works tirelessly but has yet to find the exact page our midfield are on. With Keane next to him, i think he can at least be confident that he's got a solid partner who will at least try and accomodate him, but he's often caught a pace short on crosses, or turning on the wrong side to beat his man.

As i said, learn from Drogba. Don't write him off until he's had a fair crack of the whip in a relatively settled team, under a manager with entirely different ideas, at a club that has just re-furbished it's entire setup.

That's just not true about Drogba. And comparing Pav to Drogba is just nonsense anyway.

Even on very crude statistics, Drogba's 10/26 in his first season was altogether better than Pav's 5/28. He's also a good deal faster than Pav and far more physically intimidating. Pav's figure of seven assist attempts (Crouch had 51) was just plain laughable and suggests there's little hope he can re-invent himself as a Teddy or Bergkamp.

Pav had 15 in 30 something though. And Olympiakos are a good side.

League goals - 5 in 19 starts (+ 9 assists). Not good enough for a poacher. (I won't count cup games since they are mostly against lower league opposition or second XIs.)

Preseason doesn't count for anything. Otherwise Bent would be worth as much as Torres.

Prove it.

We played premiership teams in our Carling Cup run.

premiership second XIs. even so, there's no reason why he should have such different form in the league vs the cups - that clearly rules out fitness as a factor since you can't suddenly become good in midweek games then poor three days later.

here's our Carling Cup run:

1) Newcastle - Pav scores a free header against the only team more rubbish than us in the league at the time, having just been abandoned by their manager. The most depressing game I've ever seen. A fizzy pop side (well, duh ).

2) Liverpool's second XI - one of the most disinterested Liverpool sides I've ever seen. MOTM was Fraizer Campbell, which should say something about how bad they were. Rafa clearly wanted to focus on the league.

3) Watford - never heard of 'em. Scored a penalty.

4) Burnley - Saved us in the dying seconds, which I am quite grateful for. Still, they dominated us in 3 out of 4 halves (one half was saved by Ohara).

5) Manchester United - worst player on the pitch. That freekick still gives me nightmares

The league is the bread and butter.

He didn't play week in week out, let alone game after game.

this guy could be very important for us in the future, maybe even this season.
for now though, since redknapp seemingly has him as fourth choice ( a shoe in for the cups prob) so i think the wisest thing we can do, and so that he continues developing in this league, is wait until the last day of the transfer window (set up a few options beforehand) and loan him to a prem team that are low on strikers, would intend to play him every week and desperate - point being that we could recall him at anytime. (so they woul dneed to be a little desperate)

not sure how the likes of burnley are doing for strikers, though fulham have AJ injured and maybe they would be a good option.

definitely shouldnt sell him until he has proven his worth in this league, and loaning him to a fairly footballing team would be the best thing for spurs and what i consider to be one of our prize assets.

I have seen all of Roman's goals last season, and I have to admit that some of his goals are class. I hope to see him in the starting eleven tonight. Hopefully we can get a win there, and progress in the Carling Cup. Hopefully KPB og Gio get a chance as well....

My point is, you shouldn't only be good in the cups yet poor in the league - that suggests it's not a timing/fatigue issue, but rather something to do with the quality of the opposition we face in the cup games as opposed to the league games.

Pav had plenty of consecutive starts, both league and cup, prior to February. You can say that our midfield wasn't so great before Palacios came therefore the service was poor, but there were plenty of poorer midfields in the league whose strikers were still scoring. They are still part of the team and have to bear some responsibility for our winter drought.

I support giving players time, and I think he would fare better in a team with Palacios in it, but it is rare for a striker to suddenly become much better in their second season - and unless they are willing to fight for it and improve themselves, they are not going to get that time. Why change a winning team since some player who was mediocre last season might have improved a lot, so, er, why not? Some strikers, including very classy ones, just don't suit this league. If Pav thinks he can do it, and he's convinced Harry in training that he's improved, then by all means I'd hope for him to stay. But he wants to go.

My preference is to loan Pav next season to a PL side so he gets more chances before we sell him - if he does well, snatch him back :). I won't complain if we do sell him though, as long as we have a replacement.

(Btw, I've also made a fairly detailed stats list of our strikers' passing, shots etc per game as a vague proxy for how much they're contributing, and I've been rewatching games on my laptop to confirm for myself that my impression of Pav is rather more negative than most fans'. The team as a whole wasn't doing well, but the lack of workrate and involvement of Pav/Bent/Campbell didn't help. The stats are too OCD to be put on here though .)

might not be leaving actually:

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=670720&cc=5901

Tottenham Hotspur striker Roman Pavlyuchenko has stated he will consider staying at White Hart Lane if a buyer cannot be found before the close of the transfer window.

The Russian striker's future at Spurs appeared to be in some doubt on Tuesday when he expressed a fear that a lack of playing time could hinder his attempts to secure a regular place in his national side in what is a World Cup year.

Pavlyuchenko, who joined Spurs from Spartak Moscow 12 months ago, has only played for one minute so far this season with Harry Redknapp preferring Robbie Keane, Peter Crouch and particularly the prolific Jermain Defoe.

But following a meeting with his manager, and with a potential loan move to Roma firmly off the table, Pavlyuchenko is willing to remain in North London if no side matches what the player feels is a sizeable asking price.

"The meeting with Redknapp was very good," said Pavlyuchenko in the Daily Mail. "He said I was in his plans but understood that my desire is to leave if I can't get match practice.

"However, the chairman confirmed again that that the option of a loan won't even be considered. The amount they want for me is large, which could stop potential buyers.

"If that is the case, I'll stay at Tottenham and wait for a chance. Everything will be resolved one way or the other this week."

It is reported that Zenit St Petersburg are interested in signing the striker as they seek to replace his Russia team-mate Pavel Pogrebnyak, who has joined Stuttgart.

I don't understand why we won't loan him out? He could increase his transfer value by playing more.

I'm happy for Pavlyuchenko to get a chance but it's not more important than winning games and whilst we are winning it's difficult to argue with Harrys decisions.
