I feel too jaded to even look into the Kane thread these days. Same story, oil money superclub lures homegrown talent, convinces him to act like a malcontent to leave, etc. etc. we've all heard and seen the story before. I've watched Spurs for 20 years, and Luka, Berbatov, and Bale have all done this to us.

It's not unique, the established world-class player angling for a big-money move to a hegemon. That's simply modern football (a game with which myself and many others are rapidly falling out of love), and ever since the Super League news I have almost given up on anything approaching the feelings I had growing up.

What is unique is the idea of a kid from Walthamstow and later Chingford, a local kid, joining our academy before he turned 10 and seeing him grow to be arguably the finest striker in the entire world. A kid who is well and truly, beyond doubt, one of our own. He struggled through loan spells, criticism, weight gain and loss, and at age 22 most barely thought him relevant in a pre-season match let alone a Premier League squad.

So forget the now, forget the corporatist, greedy dredging of anything unique or special from our club. Tell me about the time you realized we had someone special on our hands.

When did you know Kane was going to be special?

We don't need another Kane thread. If this doesn't stay on the topic in the first post, we'll close it.

For me it will always be that Asteras match in 2014 where he scored a hat trick then went in goal (and flubbed a FK, lol)

the perfect moment that showed he was willing to do anything and everything for the club, and I believe the next week he got that goal vs. Villa and we were off to the races. That was my moment.

I first saw him play for the youth team against Crawley in what 2008 or 2009. He came on as a second half sub if I remember correctly and left a very positive impression. I'd gone expecting to see good things of John Bostock and Paul Jose Mpoku (spelling?) And left remembering Kane (although that might be rose tinted specs).

Going back to Crawley at the weekend brought back those memories. Wonder if I'll have the same thoughts about Alfie devine in a decade, if my memory holds out that long.

this

One thing I will say is that if we develop him right, merely from the clips I've seen of him (I didn't make any academy matches last season I'm afraid, despite my regularity in previous years) Harry Kane looks like he might have the magic combination of goals and hold up play if we develop him right. He's not just doing well because he's bigger than all the other kids, from what I've seen he's great on the ball, can dribble despite not having much pace and can see a pass, and he scores pretty much every time he plays.

or

That Harry Kane does seem to be quite something, he's always bloody scoring. Screw Connor Wickham, let's make our own!

I travelled to the stadium of Light and saw us draw 2-2 with Benfica

H came on in the 2nd half for Soldado and completely changed the game

Both him and Bentaleb were brilliant that night and they had the world at their feet…

The United game where he came on late with us defending a lead. Gobbed on himself and his only meaningful contribution was hoofing it almost out of the ground in an attempt to waste some time.

Just knew then he had the mentality. When he broke through it was his ability to hit corners of the net with both feet that made it clear he could make it.

Ironically I think the most important person in Kane's development was Leandro "the myth" Damiao. We flirted with him for nearly 3 seasons, and got close to pulling the trigger multiple times iirc. If we had bought him instead, Kane likely would never have gotten the run of games at striker.

You know some smartarse is going to say "the first time I heard him speak". Not funny. I saw him play for Orient and he scored a very tidy goal, that made me take notice. Although already obviously brilliant, when he scored that great individual goal against arsenal that’s when I knew he’d break my heart one day.

On his debut against Hearts in the Europa League. This is what I wrote about him at the time.

'Hearts had an early strike against the bar and Tottenham's opening attempt on goal saw Roman Pavlyuchenko bring a save from the Hearts keeper following good work from Harry Kane. The young striker had brought the ball across the edge of the penalty and was just preparing to shoot when Pavlyuchenko pulled rank and fired in the shot. A further run from Kane brought a shot across goal and then came his big moment. He received a lovely pass from Tom Carroll in the penalty area and when the goalkeeper brought him down the referee awarded a penalty. Kane stepped up to take it himself but his shot was saved as McDonald dived to his right. I hope in years to come young Mr Kane will not be thinking, 'If only.''

'Harry Kane was the player many were wanting to see, having heard good reports of his goal scoring for youth and Spurs XI sides. In his debut, he worked hard and showed a willingness to cover back to help in defence. Even in the final minutes of added time he came back to help out and having won the ball in the penalty area, he set off up the field. He had little support from Pavlyuchenko and few chances on goal. He created more for Pavlyuchenko than the Russian international did for him. He seems willing to learn as he showed early in the game. Corluka bawled him out for not moving onto a through ball but after that he made himself available with runs into space to receive the pass and from one he got behind the defence to shoot across goal. He also looked to Cudicini for guidance when he went back in defence to defend at a corner, ascertaining where the keeper wanted him to stand for his defensive duties. After that at every free-kick and corner he took up his delegated position. He should benefit from this experience and be stronger the next time.'

Many young players making their debut, wouldn't have wanted to take the penalty - not Kane. Having seen his penalty saved, most youth players would have gone into their shell and played conservatively - not Harry Kane - he wanted the ball at every opportunity and went looking for it. A young player on debut often looks to an experienced team-mate for support - none was received from Pavlyuchenko, in fact it was the Russian who benefited from Kane's hard work and endeavour. That evening, Kane showed, to me, that he could make it at the top level, if he continued to show the commitment and hard work on dispaly at WHL.

Audi Cup final, he finally won a major trophy with us and solidified his ‘special’ status.
