Where is David Bentley?

I agree with the sentiments here, he was an awful signing for us.

The only crumbs of comfort that can be had is that he didn't play too bad in the run in of 2009-10, when we qualified for the Champions League, so he played some part in a large income boost for the club. (most went on bonues though).

Another bad signing was re-signing Keane. I didn't want him to go but he was never the same when he came back. It must have cost a bit - £12 million + high wages, and we recouped hardly any of that.

Chris Flanagan column: A sad end for Bentley at Blackburn Rovers
1:40pm Thursday 9th May 2013 in Football agan, Sports reporter

WITH immaculately slicked back hair and smart attire, David Bentley emerged from the dressing room at St Andrew's, said his goodbyes and departed.
It was surely the end for his Rovers career, and sadly it finished with a whimper after his star had once shone so brightly at Ewood Park.
Few Rovers fans will forget his hat-trick against Manchester United in 2006, or his progression into the England squad in the club's colours.
He was described by some as the new David Beckham.
But with his talent largely unfulfilled, now Bentley is just an answer to a quiz question.
Asked to name players who have featured in the Championship this season and were once transferred for £10m or more, Bentley joins the likes of Nuno Gomes, Craig Bellamy, El-Hadji Diouf, Nikola Zigic, Jonathan Woodgate, Wayne Bridge and Wilfried Zaha.
That the list is so long says plenty about both the strength of the Championship these days, and that cash that swishes around English football.
Tottenham paid an initial £15m when they signed Bentley from Rovers in 2008, but it was the start of the slide for the lifelong Spurs fan.
Tottenham were bottom early in Bentley’s first season at White Hart Lane and Juande Ramos was replaced by Harry Redknapp.

Bentley’s appearances dried up and he would have indifferent loan spells at Birmingham, West Ham and Russian side FC Rostov.
Such was his impression in his first spell at Ewood, there was some excitement when he returned to the club on loan in February.
But Bentley did not appear capable of reproducing his old form, for whatever reason.
Niggling injuries saw him drift in and out of the squad, and he was an unused substitute for the final two games of the season.
His last appearance was in the lifeless defeat at Cardiff on Easter Monday, and he now looks set to return to Tottenham for the final year of his contract.
They say never go back and, while David Dunn has enjoyed his second spell as a Rovers player, Bentley’s return was similar to that of Roque Santa Cruz.
Sold to Manchester City for big money, Santa Cruz returned on loan but did not score a goal in an injury-hit second spell.
Still only 28, it is sad to see Bentley’s talent decline in such fashion, and for even an Ewood return to have made no difference.
He has admitted regret over the way he handled his transfer to Spurs five years ago, but one wonders whether he now regrets leaving for London in the first place.
Back then Bentley and Rovers were both flying high.
Neither could have predicted how things would turn out."

Remember us getting done 1-2 at home to Sunderland a few years back (Ramos days). Think the ball boy worked up more of a sweat than that greaseball!

After said game I witnessed him jump into a range rover with 4 tarts and drive off into the sunset.

They weren't tarts, but the ball boys!

In terms of fee paid, wages paid vs performances put in and resale value recouped is there even anyone who comes close to being as bad a signing as David Bentley?

£15-16m laid out on him reduced to nothing when he walks out for free - I guess we got some loan fees for him and had his wages off the books for periods of time.

I dread to think what his weekly wage was

On the pitch he contributed a fine goal against Arsenal and a free kick goal in a game against Wigan we'd already well won - other than that very little

The only person I can think of who even mounts a challenge to Bentley's worst ever signing title is Rebrov who too cost a bomb and walked out for nothing without really performing for us

Definitely in the top 5

1. Bentley
2. Rebrov
3. Bent
4. Oyvind Leonardsson
5. Ben Thatcher
What...?

Rebrov was too good for the side at the time and would be amazing in this current squad, him and VDV would have been great.

As for the others;

That guy we got from Inter who just walked around the pitch... Forgot his name thank God.
Postiga
Toda?

Are three that come to mind that were way way way worse than any of the players you mention above.

Oh dear

Fucking hell, one more year of his contract. 6 years of paying that useless, lazy, narcissistic sod for practically nothing. I can't believe we spent £15m on a goal against Arsenal!

I wonder if we'll agree to cut our losses and pay him off this summer, I really can't see any club wanting to buy him or take his wages on a loan. He's failed at every club we've loaned him out to.

Levy was scared that Lolpool was going to default on the original transfer fee, so it wasnt a sale of £20.3m but a 6 month loan for £8m

My list was based on money spent. The guys you mention with the exception of Postiga didn't cost us a bean.

I hadn't thought about that, I remember things weren't great for Liverpool at that time - but isn't/wasn't there the 'Football Creditors Rule' which would have meant our debt was the priority ahead of non-football ones?

I guess 'cash' was a factor though, re-buying Keane, Defoe, Kaboul we wouldn't have needed to use much cash - we just had to write off debts that were owed to us, so we didn't have to borrow any (much) money. And the priority at that time was staying up, which in the end we did comfortably but you never could be certain how it would turn out.

Ok, mind changed. What a waste of a career, let's just forget David Bentley ever existed.
Dempsey, for all his shortcomings puts a shift in and contributes goals.
I withdraw my statement and will never bring up that mans name again...
