For me Paulinho has shown a lot more in the League this season than Dembele.

paulinho hasn't been any better, he should earn his way ahead of dembele, not get it handed to him because he's brazilian and cost a lot.

You see games very different than I do. Paulinho has been everywhere and has played the perfect box-to-box role by causing interceptions and creating chances. He is a much bigger goal scoring threat than Dembele.

I'd have thought that our second team would be:

Adebayor
Townsend Chadli Lennon
Dembele Capoue
Fryers Chiriches Dawson Naughton
Friedel
I think that team would come 7th or 8th.
(1st team below)

Fair enough, I put Ade, Defoe and Holtby in because they're not starters ATM.

If the starting team is Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Verts, Rose, Sandro, Paulinho, Eriksen, Lamela, Townsend, Soldado, then our second team would be this imo -

Friedel
Naughton Chiriches Dawson Fryers
Capoue Dembele
Lennon Holtby Chadli
Adebayor/Defoe

That team is better than 13 of the other 19 teams in the league. Slightly better than Swansea and Southampton, and clearly better than everyone else.

15th :blackeye:

No I jest only; talent wise you should be looking at 10th or higher for sure.

A good thread to raise the profile that we have two competitive teams that could compete in the league. They should do 1st 11 vs 2nd 11 in training.

B...B...But hes Brazilian.... and he cost a lot

Seriously though Dembele of early last season would without doubt be a tough obstacle in Paulinho's way. The way he has finished last season and started this, not so much. In the NLD in particular he looked timid at times. I don't know if its a simple loss of form or the 'niggleing' hip injury is actually quite serious, but either way he is a shadow of the player we know he can be.

Of course Paulinho is ahead of Dembele at the moment. Personally I think Dembele is still feeling the effects of his hip problem, because he just doesn't seem as fit or mobile as he was in the past. Paulinho since joining us has been everywhere, breaking up play, moving the ball forward, making dangerous runs forward. Dembele meanwhile during the NLD, dare I say it, looked scared to get the ball.

That 2XI would have run away with the old football combination.

I would guess top 10 finish and win a cup.
I would also guess only chelski and man city have comparable depth.

niall quinn voted him man of the match purely because everyone was awful in that game so he just gave it to the new guy. as for the game against swansea, townsend did the most meaningful things in the game, he should've been man of the match. paulinho just squandered five chances.

Mate you need to open your eyes a little more. Jesus.

I agreed with your first post in here regarding Dembele, but Paulinho did well against Palace. Just because it wasn't flashy and in your face doesn't mean he didn't have a good game. He did. He broke up the play well and passed the ball well. Nothing spectacular, but these are things he did well.

Against Swansea he was superb IMO. Got forward and into the box to great affect. Should of scored at least one, that was the only minus. But the positive was much bigger in that he was in there, anticipating and getting on the end of things. That bodes really well for the future. Finding space and arriving late in the box, its a timing thing - and its instinctive as well. He played really well. Its what made Lampard the player he is today, although his finishing is better for sure.

Your view of this is simplistic in the extreme, and if I were guessing - you can't help picking out the slightest negative to back up the negative comments you were firing out when we signed him.

we don't have a second team, we have a squad.

A course this is true, I'm purely using this thread to highlight our depth. I put second team in the title but obviously it is not. These are just the players that would PROBABLY not get into AVB's best 11 if he had a fully fit squad. So I wondered how well they would do in their own right.

I suppose it's a good thing that people argue over who should be in the first team shows there's not a lot of difference in the players, shows how far we've come.

Ok, it's been a great window and we now have a strong squad. With that in mind where would our second team finish if they played every league game?

Hell Boy
Naughton Vlad Dawson Fryers
Lennon Holtby Dembele Townsend
Ade Defoe

Siggy?

Probably battle it out for 6th. What do you think?

Mid table goalkeeper and right back, know nothing about Chiriches but he and Dawson would be solid I expect, Fryers inexperienced. It's not a great defence so as a unit about 15th.

Midfield four and attacking two would finish 8th, unless Ade wanted to play then could aim for 6th.

So possibly 8th to 10th.

How anyone omits Capoue from a Spurs starting XI is beyond me. He's the complete DM.

This is utter luxury.

Being able to argue about which to players are best in 6 positions in our team.

Seriously cannot remember the last time as a Spurs fan I was able to do this. Don't think we ever have.

Re. the Dembele v Paulinho debate: I think most people instinctively recognise that Paulinho & Dembele essentially fulfill the 'box to box' midfielder role in AVB's formations.

However we also need to recognise that Dembele has been asked to do a slightly different role since Paulinho's arrival. Whether this is to push up more in a more attacking midfield role, or its to act as a second box to box midfielder to allow Paulinho cover & time to settle in to the Premier league; who can say. However he wont be at his best when he's having to do something he either hasn't done for a while or is unfamiliar with, or maybe he is still carrying his injury.

We live in the era of squads now; and I fully expect AVB to use the squad in the way he thinks best.

Ps. A lot of people have missed off Sigurdsson for some reason; that would be a mistake. Gylfi is a quality player and I imagine he'll play a part over the season as he's currently our player most likely to shoot on target from outside the box at the moment.

To be fair, we're stocked in DM. I think people are omitting one of Sandro/Capoue because they feel like we shouldn't start both together unless we're planning on playing very defensively.
