Zola, because his joyful brand of football should never have lit up Stamford Bridge.
Apparently he was offered to us before he joined Chelsea but Sugar didn't think he was worth the 4.5m fee (but Chris Armstrong was apparently ).

Personally I feel Bergkamp whilst a very good player would not have been a good fit for spurs at the time he was available.

Bergkamp was a no.10 who played off the centre forward, we had someone just as good in Sheringham at the time (who I would have taken over Bergkamp of choosing between the two) and they would not have been a good partnership as both need a centre forward to work off.
Firstly I will say I disagree and I do actually think they could have formed a very good partnership (Teddy played the out and out striker role well before Jurgen came to the club - even though he excelled as the play making striker)

And as much as I loved Teddy when he played for us and he went on to prove himself to be top class with his performances for England and Man U.....Bergkamp was on a different level to Teddy I am afraid, Spurs glasses off and Teddy wasn't even close to being on a par with him in my opinion

I never heard that before but if true it's pretty outrageous to think that we turned down the likes of Berkamp and Zola and spent money on Fox and Armstrong over the years following Jurgen's departure

Still at least these days are behind us now, we'd never let a world class player go to a prem league rival from Ajax while we chase Andy Carroll and end up with someone like Louis Saha now days

There's been a few players that we were very interested or close to signing that got away and could have made a big difference. Petit, Solskar, Bergkamp, Suarez and Willian.

We did sign him

I'm sure you saw his comments on fantasy football club where he talked about how a contract to play for us was signed and put in a safe ready to be activated at rhe end of the season only for him to change his mind and request the document be ripped up

Apparently Scholar wrote about it in his autobiography

Sorry, I deleted that after I actually read the full OP and saw you said foreign imports.

Scholes, keane, adams or schmichael.

We needed steel in our team and a leader. Any of those would have made a huge difference.

Roy Keane.

This with bells on.

For me, having Keane was the reason Utd had Ferguson's drive on the pitch, as Keane shared it. The fact that they had Schmieckel there too just set it in stone.

Keane edges it for me though, a driven **** of a man with no small degree of quality to his game too.

I can't believe it took until Page 4 for Alan Shearer to appear. He's my pick because he could score any way you liked.

Agree.

He's my favourite all-time Premier League striker by a country mile.

The list is endless....we have historically always been just short of adding that one player that would elevate us from where we are to the next level, ..Moutinho,,Petit, Van Bommell, Hunterlaar....etc etc..

But the chavs winning the CL and us losing the chance of getting Hazard in the same team as Bale really hurt, we will never know how good we might have been.

Hazard....err...yes...Eden Hazard

Didn't he tell French television that he could sign for Tottenham if qualified for CL.

Only for Mr.Redknapp to bottle it against Aston Villa (in penultimate PL game) & Chelsea winning CL. Which meant Chelsea got CL in spite of 6th position, we lost out on CL in spite of finishing 4th. And Invariably losing out on Hazard.

Of course, this is a what if situation. We might not have signed him even if we qualified - may be Chelski would ve spent even more money to get him...

Hazard on one wing & Bale on other would have been awesome....

Solskjar - I remember going to a game where prematch the screens and match day announcer told us all that we had reached a deal to sign him and he would be a spurs player

Only for him to change his mind, stay at Utd as a sun and go on to score the winning champions league goal

Probably because I set the question to be about foreign import epl icons - I'm sure many would have suggested him had i not

I'd say Yaya Toure, Suarez, Drogba or Ageuro.

I love Bergkamp and a few others mentioned, but as said before, we were so crap in the 90s & early 00s that I don't think a single player would've elevated us. But recently, say the last 5 years, any of these would've made a huge difference
