Who absolutely has to play?

Watching our performances of late, we just don't have enough players stepping up. It leads me to the question: who absolutely has to be on the team sheet? For me, right now, I can't think much past Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen and Rose. I could make a reasonable case for the beast, but there is a lot of competition in the middle of the park.

So over to you - I'm not asking, who should be given a chance or who might work well in what system. I'm asking, regardless of any other situation, which players are really good enough that you would put them down on the team sheet before even thinking about the system, tactics and other personnel?

Those 4 are the must plays, yeah. Everyone else isn't consistent enough. Could make a case for Eriksen though

Given they are fit then...

Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Rose, 1 of Sandro or Capoue

Also in dire need of consistent game time together...

Lamela, Eriksen, Soldado

Given others are fit then who really doesn't need to play right now...

Dawson, Sigurdsson

Lloris.
Vertonghen at centre back.
Walker possibly, but (I'll be in a minority here), I think Fredericks or Smith would make a good fist of replacing him.
Rose due to having no other options.

Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen, Rose, Lamela, Eriksen, and Soldado imo. Maybe Sandro as well but he has tough competition with Capoue.

Lloris

Walker

?

Verts

Rose

Sandro

Capoue/Paulinho

Townsend

Eriksen

Soldado

Lamela

----
4-3-3

Fill in the blanks, because I can't.

Here, this is the team we should be playing.

Townsend ----- Soldado ----- Lamela

Eriksen ---------- Capoue
Sandro

Rose ----- Verts ----- Vlad ----- Walker

Lloris

Pretty simple if you ask me.

The front 5 to create and attack the box and support Soldado with Rose and Walker providing support on the the wings.

F-ing simple. And Capoue looks great on the ball and can see a pass too. If not change with Paulinho (As an AM).

Lloris

Walker
Vlad/Kaboom/Daws in that order
Verts
Rose

?
?
?

Eriksen
Soldado
Lamela

It's the midfield that are the question marks for me, perhaps Paulinho as the filling in a Sando/Capoue sandwich but 433 is the way to go for me

I'm surprised by the number of people writing Lamela, Eriksen and Soldado down. Don't get me wrong, I think they have the potential to be amazing and personally I would want those three in, but I don't think any of them have done enough yet to be considered guaranteed starters.

This, and maybe Eriksen as well. Thats about it.
I would have said Eriksen but I think between himself Lennon, Townsend, Lamela, Dembele, Paulinho and Sig they should all be fighting for a place along side the beast

They haven't, but they absolutely have to play together now, consistently. People are patient with them but impatient that they haven't had much game time together (the first and only time this season was 2 or 3 games ago and not happened from the start of a match since).

I guess putting it like that, you are right.
