Ok, if we're going to get out of this sh*t, then three other teams are going to have to finish below us. Who will they be?
First of all, this season there are no mug teams. There's no equivalent of Derby, except for us.
Before the season I think a lot of people would have tipped the promoted teams to go down, but Hull are riding high and Stoke look like they will bully some teams off the park. West Brom look ok. The worrying thing is that every team bar us has a win, and very few of the poorer teams are underperforming. Pretty much every team is scoring goals, and we're already 10 points behind the likes of West Ham.
So, who are our rivals?
Hull: I can't believe their form will continue, but the fact is that they already have 17 points, almost half of the usual 40 points that are needed for survival.
Stoke: Could well go down. Lots of fight but not much quality.
West Brom: Look decent but unspectacular.
Newcastle: The Ashley fiasco set them into freefall but Kinnear seems to have stabilised them and they have lots of goals in their team. In many senses they are the team most similar to Spurs in terms of having quality but underperforming. They seem to have gotten their "let's get rid of the manager/owner' routine out of their system early this year.
Everton: Should be in the top ten but look very shaky in defence and can't stop leaking goals. The Moyes contract scenario seems to have cast a shadow over their season. I think this could be a dangerous season for them.
Bolton: Look solid as ever. Megson knows exactly what he wants from his team. May struggle for goals.
Fulham: I think they might go down. They were lucky to stay up last season and although they spent a fair bit over the summer, I don't think they have much quality.
Boro: They keep playing well and losing, which is a good sign for us.
Sunderland: Keane has invested heavily, but doesn't seem to know what his best team is, and after a promising start to the season have slowed down a little.
West Ham: Should be ok, but the boardroom/Iceland bollocks may come back to haunt them, plus the fans seem to want someone different in charge every week.
Blackburn: They blow hot and cold and Ince sometimes looks out of his depth, but they don't look bad enough to go down.
So, basically, it's really hard to find three teams worse than us. Obviously, it's only 8 games in and things can change, but at the moment we look f*cked. Even if Juande picks things up and we start winning, we're going to need a lot of other teams to collapse quite dramatically.
