Who Needs A New Number 10?

Who needs a new number 10? Certainly not Spurs.

Frankly I'm glad we didn't waste our money on Willian, as we didn't need him. We have a player that's equally dangerous, quick and talented and who scores more goals per game to boot!

'Contentious' you may say, 'stupid' you may mutter...but the fact is we do have one of the best attacking midfielders in England, possibly the world, playing at our club at the moment.

No, I'm not talking about Sigurdsson. Who is in my opinion an excellent addition to our squad and brings many qualities.

I'm not talking about Holtby either. Who is also talented and an excellent option to have, at a bargain price (well done Levy)

I've even heard talk of Paulinho filling that role at the lane. I don't think so; though he would do a great job (that guy could probably do a great job in any part of the pitch, but that's another story).

Ladies and gentlemen; I have the pleasure to introduce you to our very own Wayne Rooney, Willian and Yaya Toure all rolled into one, the multi talented and supremely capable: Mousa Dembélé.

"Now hold your horses!!" I hear some of you cry. But wait...check out these points.

Dembélé has scored almost 60 goals in 335 professional appearances.

He was primarily used by AZ Alkmaar and Willem II as an AM and led AZ to the Eredivisie playing in that role. As well as for the Belgian national team.

Its only been since his move to WHL that he's been primarily deployed a bit further back, restricting his attacking forays. Yet we've seen glimpses of what he can do when played further forward last season, in games against Lyon and Liverpool away in particular, as well as Villa at home and Man Utd at home when he waltzed through the Utd defence to set up Dempsey, who's shot was saved by De Gea.

People forget that Dembélé was named in the Guardian's Top 100 players in the world 8 months ago as selected by a panel of 11 world wide experts http://www.theguardian.com/football/datablog/2012/dec/24/world-best-footballers-top-100-list . The only other Spurs player to appear in the list was Bale (and since then Paulinho has also joined).

I fully expect, with the midfield additions we've made during this transfer window, we'll see a lot more of Dembélé played further up the pitch as we did on Sunday against Swansea. With the presence of Sandro, Capoue and Paulinho; I don't expect Dembélé to sit on the bench. No, he'll play the big games behind Soldado, and he'll create havoc.

He may not score as many goals at the moment as some, but I fully expect him to develop over this season, terrorise defences and create chances for himself and others.

Spurs don't need a new number 10, we just need a replacement for Bale when/if he goes (good job there too Levy) and Lamela (or someone like him) will fill that role.

In AVB & Levy we trust.

I think dembele is capable but I get the feeling he actually enjoys playing deeper being more involved in the physical

He's not a number 10 in the way I see a number 10, he hasnt got the eye for the defence splitting pass, and in general, passing is not one of his best attributes. He's a top quality box to box midfielder.

Well well well...Lazarus...back from the dead!:eek::eek:

I have suggested a few times that we might see Dembélé pushed forward, or maybe even Sandro/Capoue playing behind Paulhino and Dembélé - sadly, as of yet, I haven't seen much aptitude for this role, yet, this season.

There was a good article posted on here at the start of last season (maybe even by me), outlining AVB's tactical blueprint. Going by that, I suspect that eventually we will be seeing a 4-3-3 with Sandro/Capoue plus Paulinho/Dembélé plus Moutinho equivalent of some variety (maybe Ericksen, with competition from Holtby/Siggy). But AVB has spoken of his change in outlook, including a need to be flexible. So we may see a 4-2-3-1 still used on occasion, and other alternatives.

no vision, like a deer caught in headlights when he gets into a promising spot. Really wish he had that eye for a pass though, would make him such a formidable complete player.

He doesn't have the bollocks to be a number 10. Maybe AVB can coax it out of him but he lacks bravery and self-belief to try those passes when he enters the final third. Not sure he possesses the vision either.

Videos on Dembele show how incredible he is at dribbling. Yes, he could be out of this world. AVB needs to do some magic on him, like he did with Bale, finding an attacking position for him to express himself. There's potential there to spark imagination in the team and be a match winner.

He has the skillset to be one of the best players in the world in A position. (Just hard to say what) It's finding that position and exploiting his talents. He could run riot in a number 10 role if he was more positive and creative.

Martin Jol at Fulham was the one who pushed Denbele deeper into a more box-to-box midfielder, not us.

He looks so much more comfortable deeper as jt gives him more time on the ball. The few occasions where he's been played as the advanced midfielder he's struggled to get into the game.

Oh and Willian was unbelievably perfect for us. Laughable to suggest he would have been a waste of money.

I prefer Dembele further back. If any of our CM's were to be pushed forwards into a No. 10 position, I think it'd be Paulinho. Bigger goal threat, better movement (arriving late in the box) and more creative.

When he first went to Fulham he was much more attack oriented. I think it was Jol that saw his potential as a link between the Defensive back and the front. I would echo the others in saying that it seems he has enjoyed the switch. But I also think he could get that bite back. I remember seeing him when he first landed and he was taking people on and trying to score.

I agree with this. Huge part of his game is swivel and shift past defenders with both acceleration and close ball control. I saw him give United fits throughout a game when he was with Fulham. He did that for us a few a few times last season too. You could see he didn't have the turning agility, flexibility or acceleration against Swansea and it looked like he lost confidence because of that. He was so good last season at receiving the ball under intense pressure and getting away from opponents, but his current fitness problems seem to be hampering his natural game.

*cough* Carroll *cough*

If Vilas-Boas stops wasting him, that is

At the moment, Carroll's future is definitely as a deeper midfielder.

Although he's started scoring a few recently for the U21's, and holds the record for most goals in a youth season.

He's a natural dribbler but not a great passer nor shooter

Doesn't Chadli sometimes play no 10 for Belgium, not Dembele?

I used to think Dembele might better serve us higher up the pitch, but now I think he is better using his strength deeper to win the ball, create space with his skill and then laying it off to someone who can pass.....

With capoue and paulinho into the team we are definitely going to see dembele released (pushed) further up the pitch and I think that will be as one of two box to box players. I think avb wants the creativity ans final pass to come from him or paulinho and the two wide forwards. So yes, moussa will need some development as a player to get his confidence back in front of goal and to trust that capoue or sandro are covering his move forwards. I love him as a player and hate the way so many are quick to drop him. His intelligence and work rate are what help secure possession every game and we always look much weaker if he is subbed or injured. Only problem for me with all that is his fitness..

i think his best position might be on the wings. he'll be relieved of midfield dutys but wont have to be relied upon for creativity in cam. he was awesome at rw last season at anfield.
