Who would be an acceptable replacement for Berba?

Imagine he goes.

Who would be able to fill that void, and in your opinion, who would you be satisfied with?

Would you swap him for Drogba? Torres? Villa? Anyone?

Personally, Those three are top quality strikers and it probably hurt a little less if they came to replace Berba. Not really sure about any others off the top of my head.

Out of three you mention only Torres plays in remotely the same way as Berba. Unfortuntely I can't see us getting him if Berba left.

Villa is not the same type of player and I am not sure him and Keane could play together and the less said about that **** Drogba the better. I wouldn't want him soiling our shirt.

The way we play and the ability of Berbatov makes him our most important player by a country mile, if he leaves we would probably have to make numerous changes to personnel and the way we play.

Kanoute in the very short term, with the money invested elsewhere in the squad, followed by a little heralded Eastern European plying his trade in, say, the Bundesliga, for £10m who turns out to be the buy of the decade.

But seriously, I don't think Berba's the be all and end all, that said I'm certain he won't go as this season will have put a lot of the biggest clubs off and we won't sell unless for a £20m plus fee and no one's going to pay that for him.

Not sure I agree here Sloth...

I think since Ramos has come in that Berba has played really well, he's getting some stick lately but I don't agree with any of it, I think his form is very good and has been for about 5 months.

Additionally if clubs look at him and think that he hasn't had a great season but might still end up with circa 25 goals and 15 assists it tells you much about his quality. I think there would be a whole host of clubs willing to pay more than 20 million for Berbatov.

Cantona.......but his retired

berbs will stay imo and we'll see the benifits next season of finally being able to hold on to our best players.

ramos knows what is needed (hence the big spending on defenders in jan) and i'm sure he'll address the midfield "issues" in the summer

Sloth - I'm seriously beginning to doubt your grasp on reality here. First you argue that Ramos will turn Zokora into a world class CM, then you suggest that Berba's performances this season will have put top clubs off signing him. Berba has been outstanding in almost every game since Ramos joined.

Berba is our most important player: he's the fulcrum of the team and essential for the way Ramos likes to play football. Del Nido would ask for an absolute king's ransom for Kanoute, and given he'll be 31 in September and has been carrying a serious groin injury for 2 seasons, there's no way Levy would pay.

Meanwhile, Abramovich is apparently willing to break his mobski bank to replace Drogba with Berba at the end of the season. I'll be gutted if he goes, but my asking price would start at £50 million and probably include Joe Cole.

Well reports in most Spanish papers are that we have got David Villa. Not sure if this as a replacement for any of our strikers or a replacement for Defoe

I still think Darren Bent, given a run in the team could do the job. I know he is not in Berba's class but I think the problem is that, because our midfield is not that strong Berba is having to create a fair few chances for us. If we got the right midfield in that could put good balls in I think Bent would be banging them in week in week out.

You could well be right, my view on Berbatov is not what you'd call 'strongly' held opinion, more 'throw-away' opinion. What does that mean? That I'm not convinced that Berbatov's as irreplaceable as others think (I do think he's very important however), but that I fully accept I could be way out in my view.

On the DZ thing, I've been pulled a couple of times recently on my pre-season predictions regarding him so might as well clarify things. I think/thought that DZ has/had the ability to be world-class and that the right coach can bring that out in him, I acknowledge those faults that he has and have never claimed him to be world-class now, I also said he may turn out never to be world-class. A season later and my opinion has changed somewhat, my claim last year that we had not given him a chance to adapt to the Premier League no longer holds as true, for example.

I'll still argue that he's a very good player however and while you and others have advocated Tainio, for example, I've laughed at that and said that...
  1. DZ as an over-all package is far superior.
  2. That TT is a very good player
  3. That Ramos will agree with me (confidently predicting the matches he will be picked for and being proved right every time).
  4. That DZ has the potential to be world-class.

Very interesting. If true, it shows that Ramos is prepared to upgrade every position in the team. (NB Berba, Woodgate and a guaranteed fit Ledley would be almost impossible to upgrade).

Legend10 & I think Villa would probably be a replacement for Keano, as he's small and fast and can't play the Berba fulcrum role. However, I'd be very happy for Berba, Keano & Villa to all be at the Lane next season.

(Legend10 & I discussed Villa & Keane on page 2 of this thread:)
