Who would be an acceptable replacement for Berba?

Huntelaar is primarily a poacher. He certainly can't play the linking, fulcrum, role that Berba plays.

Both Robbie Keane and David Villa are much better players than Huntelaar....

Am I missing the joke or what is the fascination with Kenwyne Jones?

He's very good in the air + Spurs fan's want their own Adebayour type striker.:wink:

Fair enough but only 5 goals in the league makes me think he's not the kind of quality we need if we want to be challenging for CL places. We can do better than him.

That good was he??????:shrug:

Do you think we have replaced him as yet? Have we looked as solid defensively as we did when he had him screening our back four? Can you name me a player, who would come to us, who is as good as Carrick was in that position???

anyone who slags berba off on here reads shit like the sun too much. Yor obviously biased because you think he's angling for a move.

He has had another very good season, without him and Keane we wouldnt be half the side we are.

Keeping Berba is essential if we ever want to make the top 4 the top 5

Kenyne Jones, Dirk Kuyt,Micheal Owen, Santa Cruz realistic potentiol replacements not that i want Berby to go at all, any of these 4 along with Keaneo and Benty would be pretty good, if we improved the rest of the team where we need to!

As adequate replacements for Dimitar Berbatov? Eek You're kidding, right? Fair enough, Kenwyne Jones is decent, and has potential (still aint good enough IMO) but, but.....DIRK KUYT?! This guy is fecking pants! And I'd be seriously pissed if we ever... EVER signed him up.

Santa Cruz is a good shout, I like the look of him.

I agree at the moment that both keano and villa are both better finished articles than huntalaar. But i would be, A. Surprised if we were able to get villa and B. surprised if ramos decided to pair both keane and him in a game together. Both are midgits.

The thread is about who could replace berbatov and imo hunterlaar would be the best option.

He's strong, reasonably quick, hard working and he's scored a shit load of goals over the past few seasons.

Whats all this 'Fulcrum' malarky? Isn't that what Borat calls his bollocks?

Sounds like a David Pleat-esque attempt at describing a players role in a team.

i) Well, if you read the thread, there's an SC member with access to the Spanish press who says that we're now favourites to sign Villa;

ii) there's also a link to a debate between Legend10 and I where we state that Villa and Keano couldn't play together, and that Milito would be a genuine replacement for Berba (though not as good);

iii) Huntelaar is not a good linking striker, and therefore imo could not replace Berba.

Fulcrum is a term first used I believe by Bus-Conductor. It's shorthand for the role played by Kanoute at Sevilla and Berba at Spurs: ie a big, technically gifted striker, who can hold up the ball on the ground and win it in the air, enabling midfield players to support the attack. It's been used a lot on SC for the past 6 months.

However, Pleat is known for talking bollox....

I don't think Huntelaar's all that and I watch a lot of Dutch football (not that that says anything about my judgement). For me he has all the hall-marks of a limited player who can excel in a limited league but with none of the attributes to stand him apart in a top league. He's a good target man, gets lot of goals, but misses many more, benefits from being the fulcrum and is one paced. I honestly don't think he'd make it in the Premier League, imo he'd be an expensive Dean Ashton.

If we manage to keep hold of all our strikers, i'd like to see us add either Martins or Kenwyne Jones (or both if one of ours left)

You're all missing the point. Berbatov is so important to our team because our midfield is pants most of the time. We don't need a striker as good as Berbatov if we can get more out of our midfield or bring in better midfield players.

Still reckon Bent was bought to replace Berbs by the money men.
Ashton's a poor mans Berbs but there's only 1 Berba

Agreed....if we lost Berbatov I would not even attempt to replace him with a similar player...just can't be done.

Instead I would use the money on the midfield. With that kind of money we should look at a world class midfielder and a 3rd striker who is good but not necessarily world class.

As for Spurs getting Villa, I personally don't think it is impossible. Juande is a big draw with a lot of connections in Spain where he is very well respected (apart from the management at Seville!). Villa has stated that he would like to play in England and London is always a bigger draw for foreign players. I do think we would have a better chance of getting him if Berbs stayed.

Also, I read on the BBC gossip page today that Man City were preparing a £32 million bid for Berbs! There were 3 articles about Spurs as follows:

"

Manchester City are preparing to table a £32m British record bid for Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov. (Sunday Mirror)
Juande Ramos has ordered Tottenham sporting director Damien Comolli to find him seven new players in an attempt to secure Champions League football next season. (News of the World) Ramos has also told chairman Daniel Levy that only five players Dimitar Berbatov, Alan Hutton, Robbie Keane, Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate are bullet-proof if anyone fancies raiding the Spurs squad in the summer. (News of the World)"

Spot on. If we have a midfield that can provide for the strikers then we don't need someone like Berbatov to create everything for us.

Obviously the ideal situation would be to have a midfield who provides for the strikers aswell as Berbatov to do his thing, but if Berba was to leave then we probably need to sort out the midfield before deciding which strikers to move for.
