Why are we conceding from so many high balls in to the box lately?

Am I imagining it? We seem to be conceding from so many crosses, corners, free kicks pumped in lately. Are our defenders just shit in the air?

Our team isn’t the most physical in general. Conte has his work cut out in other areas and we haven’t appointed a set piece coach like some of the other top teams. Romero (whilst I love him) is shit at marking his man and has been responsible for at least three of them since his return.

Not a huge issue but work clearly needs to be done. Marking is coachable, if not by Conte then by a specialist.

None of Dier, Romero or Davies are dominant or even decent in the air. If we are upgrading Davies we really need to be looking at someone that is strong in the air. Organisation needs to be better, for Ronaldo’s header Romero got caught out by there being a free Utd runner in front of him, should have stayed with Ronaldo but there shouldn’t have been a free runner either.

Definitely seems like we do so a lot. The two against Saints, then Burnley, now today and that's just from recent games. West Ham away also just off the top of my head. I was actually thinking about it earlier today in that our back 3 next season could possibly only see one change with an upgrade over Davies and I can't imagine the addition of one player will change enough in that respect unless they're a real leader.

You watch the replays also and it's constantly someone not even jumping with or adequately challenging the goal scorer.

I think it's certainly an issue if I'm honest although I don't know if it's just me but I worry every time it's a free kick into our box or a corner and I find there are often times we just simply get away with poor defending from them also.

I think the issue is mainly that we don't close down very well in midfield, stemming from us being outnumbered there. This means opposition midfielders with good delivery, like Neves and Ward-Prowse, have all the time in the world to pick out attackers in the box.

Set pieces I don't think we're that vulnerable - only one conceded (to Ronaldo, who despite being a rapist, is a very good header of the ball) since January as far as I can remember.

Realistically the team probably needs 6-8 players upgraded but that isn't going to happen, so I would expect 3-4 incoming which will make very little difference overall to league position or consistency.

It will make a difference but it won’t have us competing at the very highest level like we were 5 seasons ago - around the same time as we built the shiny new stadium and didn’t buy a single player for 2 consecutive windows!!!

I mean if you put in Rodon for Davies and Sanchez for Romero you immediately make us a team of big defenders who should be able to deal with crosses.

What other problems you get from those changes are debateable but we can't keep going through games conceding 2 or 3 goals against any decent side because we can't defend a simple cross.

I think Rodon should get a chance. Everyone now knows we're vulnerable in the air and the longer it goes on the more ingrained it becomes.

If Romero is the problem, why the double substitution?

Shit or / not imposing (& a few midgets)

Lloris 6'1"
Dier 6'1"
Sanchez 6'1"
Davies 5'6"
Romero 6'0"
Reguilon 5'7"
Doherty 5'9"
Sess 5'6"
Tanganga 6'0"

Other players that often cover...

Kane 6'1"
Son 6'0"
Kulu 6'0"
Bentancur 6'0"
Højbjerg 6'0"
Skipp 5'8"

If we had more imposing players, or players with better positional ability who could better read the game, then this would definitely make up for lack of one or the other. Ideally we'd want both though. If you're light as a feather Trevor and run around like a blue arsed fly then all hope is lost.

It'd be beneficial if our defenders made regular attempts to get airborne and make genuine attempts to win the ball.
So many times this season I've seen most of our players not even getting off the ground.

I wasn't attesting blame per se. Just stating that if you swap out Romero and Davies for Sanchez and Rodon our defence is suddenly significantly taller/better equipped to deal with high crosses. It's Conte's choice to play 2 of our shorter defenders next to Dier.
