Genuine question.

We are a long way off ever challenging to win this competition. Yet it is what 99% of you want on here (over winnings trophies)

Why is it so important to us in your opinion?

Beats me to be honest. I think it's just about the perceived money we will have for transfers as a result of being in the competition.

Very simple mate!

In today's cash rich modern football game, the UCL is that pot of gold that'll be the spring board to bigger and better things be it
attracting players, sponsors, fans or a new stadium!

More importantly, i see qualification as not only a positive for us but more of a negative for someone else be it Le Arse or Chelscum!
Let's take a look at teams who used to be in the competition and have dropped out

Liverpool - midtable mediocrity and have not qualified since dropping out
Newcastle - relegated and are in the bottom half
Leeds - enough said!

I see it more of the start of the beginning of the end for the Woolwich if they drop out once and it's the start of the White Dynasty in
North London.

Chelscum would not have been able to buy Hazard and Oscar if that fluke in Allianz arena didn't happen but they could go the sugar daddy route.

In a nutshell, We can afford not to qualify cos we are a well run club but Le Arse, having been spoilt over the past 16years would face a massive shock and MIGHT not be able to recover!!!

Good players want to play in the competition. If you are in the competition you have a better chance of signing those players. If you sign those players, you have the chance to improve as a team.

Because it's better than being 12th or 14th every pissing season.

The question is why wouldn't you want to be in the top four? It's natural to always want to improve, no? Asking what's so good about being at the top of the table is like asking "so what's so good about getting a 1st class degree anyway? What's wrong with just a 2:2?" Well about £5-10k on your starting wage for a start!

For me it's all about holding onto our players. The media and agents are very persuasive these days. If both channels are telling our better players they need to be in the Champions' League then it's inevitable their heads will be turned. Therefore we need to be in the CL to keep our players.

We won't win the competition, we're not reliant on the income, but we're reliant on the juicy carrot it represents.

The likes of Real Madrid visiting the Lane and trips to the San Siro. Hugely increased profile globally. More money. More attractive to better players. Playing in a competition that is widely recognised to be Europe's premier trophy. Increased foreign fan base. Better sponsorship. Hearing that Champs league music before the match. Fancy logo on the side of shirts.

All of the above is important but mainly I just never want to endure listening to Strachan and Southgate as pundits ever again unless I absolutely HAVE to.

I wasn't asking the question with my point of view being I don't want to finish in the top 4. I wanted to know people's opinions on why exactly it is important to them, be it money, transfers, getting one over on rivals, etc

The main reason for me is that it increases the chances of us keeping hold of Bale for another year or two and puts us in a better position to sign new players.

I think the money issue is a little less important for next year as the increase in Premiership TV money from £50m to £100m (or thereabouts) is almost double what we'd be likely to earn in a Champions League run.

That is just a wonderfully idiotic statement. Would you like to go on and name the last winner of the premier league that had not qualified for the premier european competition the year before? Go on. I'll wait.

Winning things is hard. Money helps you win things. The Champions League provides you with an additional £40 million a year. Simples.

What have Arsenal won lately?

There's nothing to stop the club saying let's try and win the FA Cup this year regardless of whether we're bottom of the Top 4 or top of the Bottom 16.

As we've seen, the EL is not necessarily an easier competition to win than the CL. We should be in Europe though, whether it's the EL or CL.

So le's be in the Top 4 as the money's better but if we end up like Arsenal (good cash flow nothing won recently) then I'd rather drop a place in the league to win a trophy. That's aspiration though as for us too it's another year without silverware and there's less cash in the bank. Still, shiny things are what you see in the club's history. Without trophies, it's not much of a history, so maybe without trophies it's not much of a future either.

A stadiumt hat they paid for themselves that has given them the highest match day revenue in the company which will enable them to compete financially with pretty much any club in the world. Not their fault that it looks like their executives are pocketing all the extra cash, but how many football teams are running at a profit in the world right now?

And it depends on what you define as lately. They have won the premier league a lot more recently and more often than we have, and I'm sorry, when was the last time we finished above them again?

To be fair we got tot he qf's on our first shot and if it wasn't for Crouch we, well ok we'd have gone out probably anyway, but who knows. Plus even getting tot he quarters or semi's woud mean a lot of high profile games along the way. Seeing Barca at the Lane is one of those dreams that keeps you going through losing to Wigan.

I don't get the alternative. Should we just stop?

Money - that's about it

For us though, a larger stadium is more important, although you could argue that we'd get a larger stadium quicker if we had extra CL revenue
