BBC Live Text
15:10 GOAL - Wigan 0-1 Tottenham - Bale (9 mins)
Oh me, oh my, what a shocker. If they still make blooper videos this is straight in at the top of the show. Joel Robles and Maynor Figueroa dally on the ball swapping passes in their own penalty box and Gareth Bale rushes in to charge down Robles' clearance as he realises a little too late what is happening.
15:12 GOAL - Wigan 1-1 Tottenham - Boyce (11 mins)
Wigan are straight back level. Emmerson Boyce rises highest to power home a header and the Latics are back level. Roberto Martinez will be imagining the lead that could have been though.
16:08 GOAL - Wigan 2-1 Tottenham - McManaman
That goal might be as high on importance as it is in quality. A viciously swerving strike from Callum McManaman rips into the net from 25 yards and Wigan have a precious lead.
16:48 GOAL- Wigan 2-2 Tottenham - Boyce own goal (90 mins)
Massive, massive goal. Aaron Lennon's low cross skims across the six-yard box. Gareth Bale misses his kick but the ball rebounds into the net off Emmerson Boyce's shins. Agony for the hosts. Both sides keen to get on and look for a winner.

Wigan scrapping for survival against high-flying Tottenham

Wigan Athletic host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday in a crucial game for both sides that will have ramifications at the top and bottom of the Premier League.

Roberto Martinez's Latics have developed a reputation for escapology after embarking on a superb run of form to pull clear of the relegation zone 12 months ago, but heroics are required again in the final five matches of this season.

They are currently in the bottom three and their chances of survival were dented last weekend by a 2-0 defeat at West Ham United, together with vital wins for the likes of Sunderland, Stoke City and Norwich City.

Aston Villa did lose to Manchester United but Wigan remain three points adrift of Paul Lambert's men, albeit with a game in hand.

It will be tough for Wigan to return to winning ways against a Spurs side fighting capital rivals Chelsea and Arsenal for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Tottenham are still outside the top four but are just two points behind Arsenal with a game in hand, and their North London rivals must tackle newly-crowned champions Manchester United on Sunday.
Andre Villas-Boas' side staged a stunning comeback to beat Manchester City 3-1 last weekend as three goals in seven second-half minutes gave them a potentially decisive victory.

That result will count for nothing if Spurs slip up against Wigan, however, and there will be no complacency after a surprise 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham
Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon has recovered from his knee injury and is available for to face Wigan.

Gareth Bale and striker Jermain Defoe suffered no reaction to their respective ankle and pelvis problems against Manchester City last Sunday and are fully fit for the trip to the DW Stadium.

Midfielder Sandro (knee) and defensive duo Younes Kaboul (thigh) and William Gallas (calf) are unavailable.

Wigan
Jean Beausejour is set to return to the Wigan starting line-up for Saturday's crucial contest at the DW Stadium.

With Antolin Alcaraz (hamstring) out for three weeks, Beausejour is likely to profit from a defensive reshuffle.

Maynor Figueroa is likely to move back from the wing-back berth he filled at West Ham last weekend.

Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz is sidelined with a hamstring strain suffered during last weekend's defeat at West Ham.

Jean Beasejour could be recalled to a re-jigged line-up, while Ben Watson is nearing a return from a broken leg.
Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon has returned to training and is in contention to play after a three-match absence with a knee injury.

William Gallas, Younes Kaboul and Sandro remain out.

Wigan's 300th Premier League match is a significant one - as has been the case for every one they've played since gatecrashing the top set in 2005.

In football's social hierarchy they're like an uninvited party guest that no one minds as long as they stay quiet in the corner. Then, when they finally leave, no tears will be shed by the 'old money' and there might even be one or two harrumphs of "about time".

Many feel that this is one year too many of The Latics defying the odds, with a first ever FA Cup final appearance being a distraction that will scupper their usual end-of-season surge to safety. I think I'm in that camp too, but would never commit fully to writing Wigan off.

Roberto Martinez has spoken of the need "to do a little bit more in both penalty areas" in the games to come, but it's their own in which his team needs to really excel against Spurs.

Stopping the visitors scoring might be more difficult with Antolin Alcaraz missing through injury again, BUT it's something Wigan have already done this season - November's 1-0 win at White Hart Lane was achieved without the experienced Paraguayan.

That was one of four defeats in five Premier League games that marked Andre Villas-Boas' most difficult time yet at Spurs. Just two in the last 17 (with 10 wins) has put them back on track for the prize of Champions League qualification.

Such form has also prompted speculation about AVB's future, with talk of Real Madrid batted away by the Portuguese this week. As he reaches a half century of games as Spurs boss, it's all a far cry from being sacked by Chelsea after 40.

Ah yes, the 'C word'. Everything points to the game at Stamford Bridge a week on Wednesday as being key for both clubs - but Spurs must first beat Wigan (and then Southampton!)

Head-to-head

  • Wigan are vying to complete their first league double over Tottenham, having won the reverse fixture 1-0 in November courtesy of Ben Watson's second-half goal.
  • Tottenham have only lost one of their previous seven trips to Wigan (W1, D3, L3).
Wigan
  • Wigan have only managed one point and one goal in their last three games, although they were all away fixtures.
  • They could register three successive home wins for the first time this season.
  • The Latics have lost 18 league matches - already one more than the whole of last season.
  • Despite their reputation for late-season surges, Wigan have only won seven of 34 Premier League games in April and averaged less than a point per game (W7, 11, L16). Their win ratio for April (21%) is lower than their overall rate in the Premier League (28%).
  • Roberto Martinez's side have the division's worst record against top-half opposition this season, with 13 defeats and just two wins in 16 matches. They have lost all four home games without scoring so far against clubs currently in the top five.
  • Gary Caldwell could make his 100th Premier League appearance for Wigan, and Maynor Figueroa will play his 200th game for the club in all competitions.
Tottenham
  • Spurs have come from behind to win five league matches this season - a record bettered only by Manchester United.
  • Their tally of 61 points is their equal-best record at this stage of a Premier League season, level with 2009-2010.
  • Tottenham have conceded in their last eight league matches - their longest run without a clean sheet since a 17-match streak in 2010.
  • April is the cruellest month for Spurs, who have lost a Premier League-high 35 matches in that period.
  • Gareth Bale has been involved in 12 goals (scoring nine and assisting three) in his last nine league appearances.
  • Michael Dawson is poised to make his 200th Premier League appearance for Tottenham.

Ugh, I'm at a party that starts at 1pm tomorrow. It's going to be another 2 hours of nervously checking my phone. :(

I think we'll do it though. I'd personally keep Lennon on the bench, and only introduce him if we're struggling. He's usually a slow recoverer, and I really don't want him missing for Chelsea.

Quietly confident. They can't really play like they did at the Lane again. They'll need to attack more due to their situation, which is exactly what we want.....mwahahaha :pompous:

Are we going to be in that God awful third kit?
I am very supersticious about this - this is worse then the canary one we had... look like court jesters of the lane :) Very Nervous - both sides need ALL the points and i am really on the fence on this. Just hope Lennon and Bale are FIRING on all cylinders. As I recall last season we played them of the park in the first half and they hit us in the 2nd... Squeeky Bum time..CoYS

Like I said in another thread, if we don't beat a team in the relegation zone; with an awful defensive record... We don't deserve top 4. Ignore all the hype surrounding this time and 'Wigan's escape'. We are better than them I would argue position for position everywhere on the pitch. Let's hope the lads are feeling confident - Feeling Bale and Defoe to rip their back 3 apart.

Sounds right to be fair...I think when we lost 1-0 there, it was a Figueroa header?

Sounds correct to me, off the top of my head our fixtures against them away have been:

0-1 - Win
3-3 - Draw
1-1 - Draw
1-0 - Loss
0-3 - Win
1-3 - Win
1-2 - Win
