Which part of what Poch said don't you understand?

"“I have been very clear that we would only add players that we felt would improve us and if any one player was not possible then I prefer we do not add for the sake of it."

This is also consistent with what Poch said last week regarding strikers

"It's like when you are in love with some lady," Pochettino said. "There are a lot of women around the world, but you want only one.
You genuinely believe that one first team striker is Poch's preferred opinion and Berahino was the only striker in world football that Poch could work with?

Yeah, pull the other one....

I reckon the third bid was £5m up front and details of the fourth bid seem to be emerging now….

From the BBC West Midlands reporter

"We’ve had it confirmed Saido Berahino has been given extra time off, so will meet face to face with club bosses for the first time on Monday, though the main issue at the moment for the Midlands club is inaccurate reports over the fee offered by Tottenham.

"Our sources are adamant the final offer from Spurs was just £6m up front with the rest in add ons and performance based bonuses.

"Not enough to enable Tony Pulis to move for Charlie Austin at QPR, who would have been Albion’s main target."

Which ties in with SSN's reporter on the spot who said he understood the 4th bid was only ever so slightly higher than the third.
But that's rubbish - most transfers are staged. They could have gone to QPR and proposed a similar staged deal for Austin. £5m payments over 3 years. The point is you have a contract guaranteeing the payments, and you can juggle your own assets around.

And it's been reported that's exactly what they planned to do with Fazio.

The ultimate truth of this will come out in January. If I'm not mistaken, we had another zero net spend window, but if we go out in the January window and buy players putting us in defecit for the season, then maybe Levy is genuinely trying to get the right player as opposed to any player (Stambouli & Fazio v Schneiderlin & Mussachio).
However, if January brings more sales, and any purchases that follow remains at zero net spend, then that just shows Levy bottled getting a striker in because of money, not over the choice of player. Lamela not being sold meant he couldn't buy a striker and maintain zero spend.

Other clubs don't seem nearly as stressed over balancing the transfer fees. They see a spend as a calculated investment against succes related reward, be that winning things, attaining European football, or just plain league safety ensuring another seasons TV money.

Mitchell and his meticulously assembled team of scouts need to seriously earn their money between now and January, identifying players of required ability/potential, that fall within our price range, and above all else are attainable. Players who's club are prepared to sell, and at a price we'll be prepared to meet, as opposed to dragging on all window only to fail last day again.

What do you expect a yes man to say ?

He's getting paid like 5m a year goes to work at some new fancy training complex all from achieving nothing any sane man would be happy in his position.

Is that so hard to believe? Most clubs in Europe are really struggling to buy strikers right now, there's a shortage. So much so that United ended up paying an initial £36m for a player that has only ever scored 10 league goals.

Personally I think it was a failing not signing Berahino this window, he was needed but lets not pretend there are a lot of alternatives at the moment.
That's simply not true, teams below us have bought strikers, the big Italian teams have bought strikers. There were strikers available. Limit yourself to strikers with Prem experience and you become more limited. Further restrict yourself to young forwards who are versatile and can play wide as well as central and yes you may well find yourself having "one true love" but that's a pretty ridiculous set of self-imposed restrictions.

Let's be really honest for all the snobbery on here about Charlie Austin if you asked most people now would they rather nobody or Austin I think most would go with Austin.

Mind you it does imply that Pochettino was complicit in the situation we've found ourselves in, so no sympathy from me if he discovers we're desperately thin in key areas.
I agree with most of your post apart from this- it's not like Pochettino is going to express concerns and blast Levy in a statement on the official site when there's also a message from DL...

Can't argue with a lot of what he said but quotes like these...

"retain the ability to develop the talent we already had."
"we needed to keep the space for our current players to flourish."

... Don't translate to bringing Alex Pritchard on in the 83rd of a game when we're drawing 0-0 and in desperate need of somebody to stretch the opposition and add some much needed pace to our attack!

Time to walk to the talk from both Levy and Poch. If examples like the above nonsense continues come January and we're still performing worse than we were last season then every single fan will be entitled to vent their frustrations.

Until then we have no choice but to get behind everyone, the players, the chairman and the manager!

And this is where we got it badly wrong. Having one target is fine & I agree there's no point signing a back up for the sake of it. We've done that too often before and end up selling them less than 2 years later.
But we were crying out for another out and out striker & Berahino was a sensible target. It'd be different if we went for Ibrahimovic or Benzema but we were after a totally attainable player. The first bid should've gone in on July 1st, another striker was that important.

Poch's comments seem consistent with what political prisoners say after being captured by ISIS.

Just imagine him wearing a cartoon bag with "$$" over his head and some jihad music while Levy's henchmen threaten to use the "black box" on him if he doesn't obey.

Just curious - but why activate a £40million overdraft if you are only going to use £5-6million of it...

The Manager clearly didn't though and that's what really matters

I will be shocked if we finish above 6th with this squad. I cant get over the fact that we actually only have 1 out and out striker. Some will swallow that statement but to me it's like reading a letter from a gf who's cheated for the 3rd or 4th time. Heard it all before and if and when we finish mid table I will looking at Levy and the owner. 1 major trophy in 15 years is not good enough.

that Poch quote about "one lady" is just goofy anyway. probably the exact opposite of how you should run a team, cause you arent always going to get that "one lady" leaving you with your right hand.

Before I read this statement I thought our transfer business this window was hugely flawed, almost to the point of negligence.
Now I've read it I can see that I've been completely wrong and that this window was in fact a finely calculated series of perfectly- nay, brilliantly- conceived and executed strategies, which achieved their aims with breathtaking efficacy.
What a fool I've been!

It isn't rubbish at all, the 'staging' of payments isn't the issue………….Its the amount of the initial up front offer that Peace didn't like and he said so. THAT is the point.

The statement does mock Levy's previous handling of transfers pretty decisively: "It also meant that if we couldn’t secure the few key targets we wanted, we wouldn’t just add others." Straight from the horses mouth and directly impugning his own record of just adding others. Or as Poch is quoted as saying in his newly minted English adding "just for the sake of it". If nothing else, we should be glad Levy is learning a little with experience!

Also, if we identified Berahino as Poch's one true love, and it has been reported that we were happy to meet the 25 million asking price, then why not just put the money down (in installments or whatever) on August 1st? I'm sure a lot of BSoDLs will have a long-winded response for that. But ultimately they showed they were willing to go that high and so why not just do it way earlier if you're not going to have any plan B options? Weird.

And lastly, for now, I reject this idea that our only options are "nobody" or the Rasiaks, Sahas and Campbells of the world. There is a range of options beyond zero and hopelessly inadequate for us to trade in.

True, but it would have been pretty funny if he had done.

"He ask me if I want strikers. I say 'uno'. He later tell me he thought I say 'oooh no' and now my attack is muy terrible."
