If there was a prize for stating the obvious this thread would win it...

Clearly the best combination in a player is to have high quality mixed with a winning mentality, but how many in our squad have it? And how many have just one part or the other?

I think Ramos has a lot of work to do in recruiting players with the right attitude and i also think he needs to shift the dead-wood like Chimbonda ASAP.

Obvious candidates for both are King, Woodgate, Keane and Hutton.

Examples of players with just the ability but not the attitude are Chimbonda, Berbatov and maybe Lennon (that might be harsh on him though).

Players with the attitude but not the ability include Robbo, Dawson, Tainio, Lee and Malbranque.

Then there's a whole host of others with a bit of ability and a bit of attitude like JJ, DZ, Thudd and Lennon.

The likes of Lennon and Huddlestone should be given an opportunity to play in a set-up which you have advocated.

Being young, they probably don't feel capable of influencing another more established player,s mindset, let alone their own, when the rub of the green is going against the team.

What we need is a team of Robbie Keanes...!

How can you possibly say that Berbatov does not have a "winning mentality" (your original definition of "attitude")?

Sorry, sloth, but that's just plain nuts. Berba is a winner. Henry's on field displays of frustration were ten times worse than Berba's, but nobody would possibly say Henry wasn't a winner because he got irritated by his teammates making the wrong decision or playing a poor ball.

Agreed, complete winner. Cool pen at Wembley proves it.

How does tainio have an attitude? he was the main main at auxerre but he's come here (to largely sit on the bench) and has never complained. He has always done a job when called upon in several different postions and has said he loves the club. I have always liked him as a player and if played in his preferred position he would be alot more recognised as the player he could be.

If Tainio was the main man at Auxerre im sure he wouldnt have left on a freebie, and i doubt he ran down his contract like Campbell.

I don't often agree with you Sloth but you assessment here is right .

Man Utd exemplify the sort of player with quality and will to win , I bet they had arranged to sign Tevez before he even got to the Spammers .

Once a quorum of big time players is achieved , lesser players will up their game .

Do you think Spurs have the finances to do it ?

Er, I think you may have misread his point. He's saying that Tainio has got the attitude (i.e. he wants to win and puts it all in for the team) but not the ability. Not all attitude is bad...

Erm he let his contract run down so he could join the club he has supported since he was a boy. :shifty:

Tainio hasnt got ability? I know it was a couple of years ago but anyone who saw his goals against inter milan at the lane will tell you he has ability. And i know youtube isnt an indicator of ability but you look at some of the compilations from his time in france and he was the nuts of an attacking midfielder.

Also my favourite goals from last season was Tainio's volley against West Ham in the 4 -3. Absolute class finish.
