Winning Mentality..

For the first time since that infamous lasagna gate season under BMJ - I can feel that the team has once again got the winning mentality installed into their heads.

Home or Away, if we go behind..we know that patience and persistance will get us the result we want as has shown in our first 3 games.

In the past when watching spurs - seeing them go behind was heartbreaking. More so because you were praying that their would be an equaliser and winner and that it would somehow come, anyway, anyhow, be it an own goal or an opposition fumble.

A bit like watching the sky4 vs any opposition, when you see them go behind..you get that "you just know" feeling that they will come back to win the game or equalise be it in the 90th minute or within a matter of seconds.."you just know" that its somehow going to happen, a feeling one constantly gets with Chelsea and their insistance on getting 90th minute winners under mourinho, and more recently in the Hull game under Ancellotti.

How many times have we seen the same from United too? Coming back from 2-0 / 3-0 down to then go and win the game, some painful memories for us in particular.

Anyhow, for the first time since BMJ was boss, yesterday, at 0-0...then again at 1-0 down, I KNEW spurs would score. I knew we would find a way back into the game..lo and behold it happened. That winning mentality is back amongst the players, and more importantly amongst the fans..their is a real expectancy to get a result from every single game, beating the top 4 has become a bit of a norm for us over the last few years with numerous wins...

With that, we will push top 4 all the way till the end of the season. We are in for a nail biting season, "I just know it"

This is sort of what I touched on in my away form thread.

The last 3 seasons it has taken us until December or November to win our first away game and even when we've done so, we've struggled to get the sort of mentality you need to win away, with us failing to win again on the road until February for two of those seasons.

Here we've won two away within 1 week of the season starting, before the end of August. It is absolutely massive, because we now have the confidence to build on this. No, we won't win every away game, we will lose away, but we've made such a good start that I believe they will be slip-ups, rather than true to Tottenham form.

Indeed.

I can see us bettering our away record from past seasons though.

Yeah. We've got that winning mentality after 3 games.

(Don't you actually have to win something to get a winners mentality?)

No, you don't.

We got off to a terrible start last season and had an awful mentality after that. Our passing and movement was without any kind of confidence and therefore we lacked cohesion. That's not because the players were shit though, it was largely down to mentality.

This time round we've got off to a flyer and when the players are playing with confidence, mentality improves. For the first time in a long time we're going to other team's back yards and playing our own game - we didn't even do this under Jol imo.

Well it will be nice to win against Brum and go against the Manure unbeaten, hopefully with a King & Woody partnership at the back.

I just hope added pressure dosen't come onto the team as I hate it when everyone is talking us up in the media just waiting for us to balls up.

Its more of a mental state, a team spirit that they just know they are better then being behind or drawing a game, thus having the faith and knowing the goal will come with time and patience = winning mentality.

You'll see what I mean at some point this season when we are 2-0 down and come back to get a draw or win - you heard it here first

You do. Tops teams do well because all they know is how to win. You have to win enough so that winning is all you do. 3 games isn't enough to claim winners mentality.

And the reason our season was terrible was because we had sold Berbatov and Keane. Our team is barely different from the one last season, with the exception of the forwards. Goals win games.

A team full of Palacios' won't make a difference if you can't score a goal.

I know what you are saying but what is happening is we are winning something; games.

Collectively we are much better than the 2005-6 season. Stronger Defensively, better creatively but for me, the common denominator is having a proper busy **** in there as well. In 2005 it was Davids. Now it's Palacios.

Getting off to a flyer for a team with our resources is a MASSIVE boost.

The poor starts we've had in the past have been so horribly deflating for everyone, it's a wonder we ever recovered as well as we did....

Spot on. That bit of nastiness was missing for a while.

Plus, I seem to remember that we actually won the League Cup before last, and were a kick of a ball away from winning it again last season.

If Woodgate come back strong and King can manage his dodgy knee, it's a very very good side... not short of players with a winning mentality.

I have said similar in other threads, we did have a good balanced team back then but it is no coincidence that we had Davids. He may not always have put in 10/10 performances every week but he is a born winner and very often singlehandedly showed us the way, as well as doing 2 mens jobs on the left. I can remember an away game at Wigan (or West Brom?) where we lost 2-0 and were well beaten, in the 93rd minute Davids had just defended on the edge of our box and then went charging down the left wing busting a gut to make something happen. He knew there was no chance of us winning but also knew the importance of maintaining a level of personal and team performance and commitment; you work your socks off from whistle to whistle regardless of the results and if you do that the results will more often than not go in your favour.

The class of 09/10 is better in every department and have generated the winning mentality. Over the past 33 games we have a very good record and these players now go out and expect to win. Just remember, as the Davids team proved, you don't have to beat anybody in the top 4 to be 4th, you just have to win the games that you should win. Now we believe we can compete with the top 4 and beat everybody else home or away.

That is also a great point. No matter how good you are confidence is a massive part of sport and life generally. Our team was already confident from our form last season and from our results in preseason, but these 3 games has made them truly believe in themselves.

If we can come through the difficult period ahead, maybe not even unbeaten but having performed strongly, we can look forward to a very good season indeed. I suspect that while Man U at home will be a real test, Chelsea away will tell us where we really are. If we were to beat Man U, which is more than possible, and to make a good account of ourselves at Chelsea and maybe get a draw, people would really begin to take notice.

I think the difference is...we have finally got the confidence back with these 3 wins our team know they can do it and for the first time in years were out of the blocks flying!! which i think could see us cause real damage :)

Couldn't agree more with that bit. Not sure that we've got the winning mentality to the extent you're on about just yet - a bit too early to tell - but there is definitely the belief from everyone in and around the team that we will score. With that in mind, IF we can replicate our home defense record from last season, we won't drop many points at home this season.

Fingers crossed for Saturday - Birmingham will not be an easy game at all, and in some ways its a bigger game than the 2 that follow because we're expected to win this one.

Aha.

And they've started very brightly. Only lost 0-1 at Old Trafford, won Portsmouth away (granted Pompey look shit) and drew with Stoke. It's not the best of starts, but for a club coming up it's quite fine.

And they've only conceded 1 goal. Let's hope we trash that stat.
