Why move on Gil before we know how he fits and works in Ange's revolution? No point in spending money just for the sake of it.
I really rate Nico Williams but I 100% agree with you. Gil has never really been given a fair shot with us also Ange’s system should suit him very well. I really hope that Ange gives him a fair chance between now and Christmas. Obviously that also comes down to Gil impressing as well.

As much as in theory I’d love Williams i’d prefer Gil, who we already own, to coming good. Of course maybe he turns out not being up to it but we shouldn’t be writing him off before he’s given an opportunity to impress.

Jarrad Branthwaite at Everton would be a great homegrown LCB pick up - I think he will be a 50m pound player in a years time. Was on loan at PSV last year and looks a good ball-playing CB. Before the last game week he ranked second for most aerial duels won, and first for possession regains amongst CBs in the league.

I think the main areas of concern are central defence. Lloyd Kelly seems a reasonable choice, home grown, has the attributes needed to play the system, and will be available for a cheap price to fill a squad role. Then we can see if we need further upgrade/reinforcing there next summer.

I don’t see us doing much more than that tbh. Unless the likes of Højbjerg, Dier, and Lo Celso are moved on and we decide to bring in better suited players. Though I think GLC still has a part to play here.

If we have a buy back option for Dennis Cirkin he could be a smart option.
Signed a new deal recently but seems to be delivering on his potential, is homegrown and club trained for future european campaigns.

If we could sell them, eze could replace perisic and Lo celso covering lw & 10. Slim down the squad but a real quality option. With son playing striker I feel LW is one of our weaker spots and so is madders back up.

CB is obviously the main focus. Kelly seems the obvious choice but I still wonder if ccv will be an option given how short on club trained we are and how good he was for Ange.

Assuming no outgoings then I'd say all we need is a third top level CB.

I think come the summer we will need a lot more, with those that don't pass their audition this year being moved on.

Kelly at LCB is still the banker because he's a value deal in the only position we are definitely short.

We then have to wait and see where Sess, Gil, Veliz, Phillips and a returning Bentancur leave us as these are the positions where we are left short if they are not up to scratch.

Yeah, it's too early to say what we'll need really, apart from the obvious CB shaped hole.

Still hard to judge many of our players, like Sess and Gil and then we also have a few youngsters knocking on the door, will Ange think that the likes of Phillips, Devine, Donley etc could be able to step up?

I'd be happy with just CB cover, depending on sales, rather than buying for the sake of it and possibly blocking the pathway of some of our younger talents.

Long way to go yet though.

Our current squad looks like this:-
GK:
Vicario - key player
Forster - backup, HG, contract ends in 2024
Lloris
- contract ends in 2024
Whiteman - backup, HGC (HG & club trained)
Austin - backup, HGC, contract ends in 2024

LB:
Udogie - key player
Davies - rotational player, HG
Sessegnon - backup, HG, injury-prone

RB:
Porro - key player
Emerson - rotational player

CB:
Romero - key player
Van de Ven - key player
Dier - contract ends in 2024
Phillips - prospect

CM:
Bissouma - key player
Maddison - key player, HG
Sarr - key player
Bentancur - key player *returning from injury
Hojbjerg - rotational player, deemed to be surplus
Skipp - rotational player, HGC
Lo Celso - rotational player, deemed to be surplus

FW:
Son - key player
Richarlison - key player
Kulusevski - key player
Solomon - key player
Perisic - rotational player, contract ends in 2024
Johnson - key player, HG
Veliz - prospect
Gil - injury concerns

the red names indicate that we may offload them or definitely leaving next summer. so based on the assessment,
GK: a HG backup e.g. Johnstone
LB: depends on whether we keep Davies
CB: a LCB is desperately needed e.g. Kelly
RB: no change needed
CM: Skipp is likely to stay for at least one more season if we manage to get European football for next season for club trained requirements (4 players need to be club trained). If we move on PEH and GLC then I would like us to go for Eze/Gallagher
FW: the current group of FWs is performing well, so not sure if we will spend big on a new FW like Vlahovic/Chiesa/David next summer unless we sell Richy in addition to Gil/Perisic (end of contract)

I think we need to find a HG GK backup too, Forster's contract ends next June
Thats tough to pull off in January. More like one for next summer.

Really, in January, absent a real bargain, I'd be looking to find a CB, and really nothing else.

If we suffer an injury crisis between now and then, I could see expanding the search, but the only weakness we have right now is a lack of depth at CB.

In: Kelly + Gallagher

Out: Dier, Sess, Hojbjerg, Lo Celso, Lloris

Think that leaves us with a more manageable sized squad and net spend should be minimal and wages probably decreased a lot.

Whether Chelsea are still willing to do a deal for Gallagher is another question.

I wonder if there’s a case for extending Foster’s contract. Guess it depends on if he maintains his level between now and the summer, and if he is happy to be back up.

I'd still like us to get Orban. Think he's got a big future. Kelly makes lots of sense and I'd swap out Sessegnon for Rico Henry in a heartbeat.

Was speaking to a Sunderland season ticket holder at the weekend.

They really rate him up there. Think he's mustard.

Not a fan of Kelly.

Don't think he's quite good enough..

Having said that, if Ange wants him I'm in.
