I certainly don't buy the narrative that we don't have much money to spend - I think we patently do but will choose our business very carefully.

Seems to me that it would be in our interest to play down our intentions for January. With the situation we're in, we dont want to appear desperate otherwise we lose a lot of leverage in negotiations for players.

I think we’ve always had money it’s just we often don’t choose to spend it. I agree tho that I think we will spend in Jan but I think we will only really look to replace players. So we will get a CB because technically we will be replacing Sanchez but beyond that it will depend if we sell the likes of PEH and Richy

We should be all over this like a wet rash

Yep this is the one.

£42m release clause but with his contract running out and no new contract agreed yet they may take £35m or so in January if we offer it.

Game changer type signing for us, the perfect Ange winger and he can play both flanks so he could play in tandem with Johnson or Kulusevski.

It’d make no sense to peddle out to the press that we have money to blow. And, when it comes to Tottenham it’s a very believable thing to say “we don’t have much money to spend.”

I’m not expecting us to have a net spend of like £100m in January, but I could see us making 2-3 additions (and maybe a departure or 2) that help ease the burden of what will be another important Summer transfer window.

I’d be perfectly happy just to sign him on a pre contract for summer and let him play out the rest of the season there. Obv it be great to have him now but if money is an issue then prioritising the long term project could make sense.

Only big problem I see is Barca who also love him. Considering their financial problems Williams on a free is a golden goose.

I think he goes Barca. There was talk a month or so ago that everything was pretty much agreed. At the time I thought it was nonsense but idk, this quote makes me think it’s what happens. I also saw yesterday talk that about Raphinha being allowed to leave and that would make a lot of sense financially for them.

Or maybe even staying put. The quotes certainly don’t scream that he can’t wait to get stuck into a Chick King burger.

Tie this in with Ange’s requirements for players to be desperate to join us, I suspect we have moved on from any interest. Would be incredible though!

Raphina's availability at Barca being widely reported now and I notice the discussion about getting a proper upgrade on the wings

What do people think of his time at Barca ? I rarely watch them so have no idea and his stats have been very average (which, given how much better they are than everybody except RM, AM isn't that impressive). He was fantastic at Leeds in a Bielsa team though so is a known quantity and would surely be a good fit for our style of play

Negatives would be that he'a RW (whereas our greater need is LW) and might see us as a step down from Barca and somewhere to get his career back on track but not to stay for the long run

Chelsea and Newcastle interested but we have Lo Celso in part exchange and surely Chelsea don't get another winger/AM ?

Never understood why he went there apart from 'it's Barca'.

I don’t think they would be looking for a part exchange. If they want to keep Felix they will need to raise funds and I’m sure they will be looking to sell Fati and Raphinha to fund that potential transfer.

Personally if looking for s RW I’d rather get Soulé or Williams (although if Raphinha leaves it will be because Nico is going to Barca) then Raphinha. He’s a decent player don’t get me wrong but I’m just not convinced it would be best use of money. I think he flatters to deceive a little. I think we would be better served looked for a young player who has the potential to be an elite talent rather then someone who isn’t and probably never will be and elite talent.

Really liked Raphinha as a player but with the way Ange talks about character and how important it is to want to be here, I'd be wary about bringing someone in from somewhere like Barca because they will inevitably see us as a step down.
