Paying extra attention to how Wanyama gets on because he could be the difference in deciding to bring in one or two CMs.

I think a top quality CM - who can cover lots of ground as well as drive forward and break the lines - and a top quality LB (Tierney, Grimaldo) will do us right. Next summer could be a bit of a problem though depending on who is and who isn't still here.

I think that next Summer will be a watershed. The club can not get away with taking the p""" with a lack of investment, without Poch walking or the fans up in arms. Or, ENIC are looking to sell us.

I suppose it could depend on what we do in January and early summer '19. If we haven't shown any intention in January the likes of Eriksen will be exploring their options and with Toby yet to resign we could potentially be looking at a light exodus.

Next summer will be exactly like last summer and every summer, we will spend roughly what we earn through sales. If we haven’t sold anyone and there isn’t any player that looks like they’re being sold then I wouldn’t expect much of anything.

In terms of winter not much happens. I don’t think there’s a chance of grabbing a top class CM half way through season so we might as well keep Dembele and hope Winks keeps coming back into form. One thing I think should happen though is if Wanyama can’t get fit I’d offload him and bring in the highest intensity DM we can find to put pressure on Dier.

In summer I’d replace Davies with a fast attacking backup LB, replace Toby (controversial) with best CB we can find, replace (unless one steps up for rest of season) both Aurier and Trippier with a first choice RB and have KWP backup. Then sell Llorente, Sissoko, Dembele, GKN and Janssen replacing them with one top class CM.
I wouldn’t do anything in attack, I think we’re sorted, what I’d do is finally give Edwards a spot in our squad.

Be interesting to see what the club tries to do re dembele in winter. Will they try to get him to accept an offer from China with a transfer fee, leaving us short in midfield or try to keep him but lose him on a free in the summer? What will dembele prefer? If we had bought a cm last window we would have more flexibility, but now losing him mid season could be a big problem, depending on things like wanyama fitness issues etc

Money for dembele may be more of an issue for us given Toby can leave for £25m in the summer and given that Eriksen, Dele and verts will be in their last year next summer and may well leave for cheap or run down their contracts and leave us with nothing. Looks v expensive (and challenging) to deal with the list in the next 12 months.

Barrios been pulling up trees for Bocas apparently. Was told they wanted to hang on to him till January for the copa libertadores. Which they are now in semi final. But the deal is agreed and he will come in January. Obviously take with large pinch of salt but does make some sense. I think his energy is just what we need in middle of park.

Where are you getting that from?

Can someone help me out, what does pulling trees mean?

Central midfield is absolutely key. It has been for several seasons to be honest. Winks is perhaps our only CM with a long-term future. Dembele looks like he just has this season left in his legs, Wanyama’s level has dropped significantly since his injury, and Dier is a CB despite what he thinks.

If Skipp emerges this season, we may only need two recruits in this area, depending on our formation. I’d love to sign midfielders whose outstanding attributes revolve around ball retention and distribution, rather than defensive/offensive qualities being their standout features. Almost akin to Arthur at Barcelona; the modern-day ‘anti-press’ types.

Rabiot, Ndombele and De Jong already look out of reach, but there are some other excellent young CMs who fit the bill. Really like the look of Sander Berge and Lobotka.

Not only that. We'll be held to ransom prices whoever our target may be.

How much would Doucoure realistically cost? No chance that happens this winter but possibly for next summer.

But that's a debate for another thread.....

Levy's definitely got a lot on his plate.

We’re competing with them in the league and often doing better than them.
Ah ok, so you're just making the (very general) point that "we're competing with them in the league". And that's great! We all want that to continue. But to quote your good self, "that is a different point to what I was discussing". I was under the impression we were debating competition for transfer targets, and specifically, how frequently we've been gazumped by "clubs with a higher turnover". You haven't addressed any of the questions in the post to which you replied, so I'm not sure what you're actually arguing any more. Are you defending this summer's lack of spending because we're currently top four? Are you advocating a policy of not investing in the squad because historically we've done well against our competitors? But more pertinently, in acknowledging that this team and manager is "competing with ..and often doing better than" teams with a higher turnover than us, have you not questioned what we might achieve if our head coach was backed with investment in the squad?

"Pulling up trees" is a colloquialism we use to describe doing something extraordinary or remarkable, Dtx. We often use it as a negative model, mate, for example, "Dier isn't exactly pulling up trees", meaning, "Dier has been pretty ordinary". Hope all's well with you, mate!

There's no rumour in Argentina about Barrios. The last mention was when the window was open, and his last link was with Chelsea, not us.
