Injury ends Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate's season

Tottenham have confirmed that defender Jonathan Woodgate will miss the rest of the season following an operation on his long-standing groin injury.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp revealed that Woodgate underwent surgery in Australia on Thursday and will remain there for three weeks to recuperate.

Woodgate, 30, has played only two league games for Tottenham this season.
Spurs will also be without captain Ledley King for another two weeks as he recovers from a thigh injury.

King, 29, has been out since picking up the problem in the 3-0 victory at Wigan on 21 February.

The England international is ordinarily an automatic choice for Tottenham but cannot play games in rapid succession and rarely trains because of a chronic knee condition, which leaves him susceptible to further injury.
Midfielders Tom Huddlestone, Jermaine Jenas, Aaron Lennon and David Bentley are also currently in the treatment room.

However, Redknapp has been boosted ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash against Blackburn at White Lane with the news that top scorer Jermain Defoe, who started on the bench last weekend against Fulham because of a tight hamstring, is set to return to the starting line-up.

England international Woodgate has suffered a succession of injuries throughout his career.

He made only 10 appearances in three seasons for Real Madrid after joining the Spanish side from Newcastle in 2004.
A back injury kept Woodgate out of the 2006 World Cup but he appeared to have put his problems behind him at White Hart Lane, where he started 34 Premier League games last term.

However, he missed pre-season because of his groin injury, despite having had an operation on the area at the end of the 2008/09 season, and was forced to have further, minor surgery for the same problem in August of last year.

Sadly, gifted defender that he is, we all knew he was very injury prone when he signed. Yeha. let's all hope that this is it, don-and-dusted, and he is fine from next season. Unfortunately, I am concerned that if it doens't we could see his injury cut short.

harsh may it sound

do we really want to start next season with 2 central defenders that might not last
more than a few games.
ledley IS a legend, and i would love to gambe on him again.
but woody? really top player..but can we carry 2 injury - prone defenders again?

we will probably be in europe next season, and thus play even more games.

i think we have to be careful ,if dawson or bassong gets injured,we will be relying on two players who have a history of breaking down.

what with kaboul signed, maybe its time to let woody go?

harry has to make sure we go into next season prepared,we cant keep waiting for woody, harsh though it sounds.

Great point and have some rep.

I also agree that we can't rely on these two injury prone players to lead our defense. I would rather just say, Woody if you want you can go elsewhere but if you want to stay it is going to be more as a coach for the young guys, think what he could teach Kaboul and still Dawson in training.

Now the the new question is who would we get to replace him? Kjer(sp?) from Palmero? Gary Cahill?

I agree, and i think this could happen. Especially when you consider the wages these 2 are on. Surely we can only afford to keep one on the books next season.

I think Dawson is ready to replace him now.

Gilmores groin is a horrible thing to suffer as a football player. It even hurts when you sneeze.

King's deal is due for re-negotiation in the summer. So i'm sure we'll save some pennies there.

Just to echo a few points, It'd be nice to see Woody fit and well for next year, however i do think we need to look at a top class replacement for one/both these guys.

Not surprised Woody's out for the season.

Although Woody's a class player, i'm not 100% convinced we've missed him too much this season as Dawson seems to have upped his game and i've also been really impressed with Bassong.

Can't believe i'm saying this as i'm a massive King fan, but perhaps it's time to have Dawson and Bassong as or CB pairing next season as these two seem to compliment each other well.

Hopefully we'll have European football next season, which will require more games from more players. A regular Woody :) really could make the difference then, even if he can't play every game. Even 20 or so games from King would be hugely beneficial. I think Dawson and Bassong are the future, but we can't rely on just those guys for a whole season and it might be hard to get in decent, experienced backups/alternatives.

Good point.

I think they've done an excellent job this year, all things considered.
