World class players who you thought were pants/overated

Terry henry - flat track bully. very good player sadly but doesnt deserve the superlatives reserved for zola, cantona, shearer, bergkamp etc. Too often anonymous in the biggest games for club and country.

Never rated casillas

always thought vdv flatered to deceive until we signed him...then i realised. on a similar note i feel sneijder is pretty meh

but the biggest ones for me were seedorf who i never once saw play well. how hewas so successful baffles me

bebeto was atrocious and was fortunate to playalongside romario and not so fat ronaldo. i'll never forget the martin o neill quote from the world cup final 98. Summed his 'talent' up perfectly.

You didn't watch him dominate the game against us at WHL a couple of years ago then?

It was only after I read it a second time I realised what you meat there. For a second I was thinking "since when the fuck were Dani Alves, Pique and Maicon English!"

Most over-rated keeper of the last few years is definitely Casillas. Blatant Real Madrid favouritism that's kept him the number 1 jersey for Spain.

John O'Shea cannot be compared to Puyol. Puyol has been nominated in the best world 11 numerous times, won lots of personal accolades , you don't get voted the world's best defender by playing like a donkey.

Isn't that the point of this thread? Players who are widely considered world class but you don't really rate? Hence me suggesting Puyol (who I'd already said had been nominated for lots of personal accolades). The reason I mentioned john O'Shea was because your argument for Puyol being good was that he'd won a lot. I just think he is a little fortunate to be in two great sides and as an individual footballer I don't think he is great. Pique too

Their whole team dominated us that night dont remember him standing out to the degree of a world class player who was deserving of all the platitudes he received. he must have been alright to have the career he did but i just didnt see the big deal with him always pretty average or worse when i watched him club or country

Despite the fact he "created" the role of defensive midfielder, I never really thought much of Makelele.

Another DM that got far to much undeserved praise was Gattuso, mainly because he played alongside Pirlo who made him look a hell of a lot better than he was.

And probably the winner of the thread, Anelka. I find it unbelievable how much money so many clubs have paid for him when I honestly don't think he was ever that good.

Dani Alves is a good shout. Never seen what's so good about him.

When Barca we're at their peak Dani Alves was superb. He was consistent and had many great attributes but the one that stood out for me was his crossing.

He hasn't been the same since but I don't think he was ever overrated. He was very good at Sevilla, peaked at Barca and is now on a downward spiral (Pique too).

I was referring to his personal achievments, if only Spain wern't lumbered with Pique and Puyol as CB's , just think what they might have won.

I think they would have won just as much with two other centre backs. It's what i've been getting at. Anyway, you don't agree with my opinion, it's cool.
