I was going to say," would you rather win the cup or finish fourth?" (of course we would all prefer the two of them), but then it seems to me that the whole media-driven football circus revolves around the CL, so that in the minds of fans and players it is the nec plus ultra of human experience...does anyone disagree ?

Sad to say that 4th is higher priority now for me. Money beats romance out of football...

CL = money/glamour = top players = CL and so on.

I know its the wrong answer for so many reasons, but for me to win the FA Cup would be fantastic.

The day I say otherwise will be the day I stop watching football

And the correct answer to those who think otherwise, yes that's you Mr.Van Der Vaart, is finish fourth
for many many reasons including hanging on to the players we want to hang on to, and attracting the players we would like to attract.
And that might include the aforesaid Mr. Vaart who might like another bauble before he moves on toi another CL team.

I loved the Champions League run. But one of my first true memories of Spurs (not ones that I've read or seen videos of) is winning that semi-final against Arsenal. I was 7 years old - which is quite old I suppose. But I can still remember watching it and being excited - but not really knowing why.

There's still something about Spurs and the FA Cup.

I would truly love us to win the FA Cup - and to be there as well.

The same discussion was on TalkSport yesterday and as much as I would love to say the Cup, which is all about the glory, I have to say fourth, purely for the long term implications it could mean considering financing the stadium and of course, keeping our best players.

If we retain these players then we will have plenty of chances for silverware, I have no doubts about that.

Would love to win the Cup. We'll be looking at pictures like the one above for years to come. Makes it even better it could be by beating a Premiership team not someone easy like Milwall or Southampton.

But...it really has to be 4th doesn't it? For the long term future of the club. Especially as it would mean Chelsea potentially missing out. Where would they end up without the CL money.

I was gonna say 4th, but having read some of these posts i aint so sure. We got into the CL last year and did that lead
to a mass arrival of world class players? No.

Fourth for me, but I wonder had we still been coasting to third would people have the same feelings on the matter.

But yeah its sad really, to win the Cup would be fantastic.

If we lost out on CL football after the season we have had it will be unbearable, would the cup compensate? yes it probably would, but as the summer goes on we will still be thinking about how we fucked up CL qualification and we would never live it down.
Head says CL,heart says cup, as i think with my head it has to be CL, just, both would be great, fuck 3rd and the woolwich.

This.

I really want to win the FA Cup and I genuinely think we will. I'm not as confident of 4th so if I had the choice between the two I'd go for CL football.

The FA cup and Spurs used to seem synonymous when I was young yet I have only ever seen us win it once, only ever seen us be in one FA cup final so yea I would love us to win tomorrow and love us to win the final in May.

I remember when we beat Forest it elevated us above Villa as the team that had one the cup the most times and even though Arsenal were always better in the league and had won the league more times that alone made our club special in my eyes at the time. Yet Arsenal have won it so many times in the past 10 years they have specialised all our history and even Chelsea have done similar with their recent successes in the two domestic cups.

So I understand the glory aspect of winning a cup, I indeed have been to Wembley and seen us win a Cup before so I remember the atmosphere and I remember the the feeling at the full time whistle knowing we had beat Chelsea and I remember the feeling when Woodgate's header hit the back of the net.

I'm not over looking the glory or forgetting what football is all about when I say right now I would pick fourth over the cup win, for the simple reason I think right now it is more important to us as a club and our potential future development.

I think without CL football we will struggle more (not saying we won't struggle with CL football) to attract the type of players we need to turn us in to an outfit that could win the league and win cups on a more regular basis. I think without CL football we could struggle more to keep hold of our better players who could kick up dust to force moves without CL football (and even if not sold could disrupt the harmony of the squad and have a negative impact on our future)

I am not saying CL football will guarantee future success, it won't guarantee we sign the likes of Hazard and Remi and bring Jose in as our new manager it also won't guarantee the likes of Bale, VDV and Modric are happy to stay at the club and spend the summer relishing another run in the CL with the lillywhite shirt on instead of spending it angling for moves to Chelsea/MAn U/Man City/Real/Barca

It would however in my opinion give us a better chance of doing the things we need to do for next season i.e. keep best players, sign best new players we can, than winning the FA cup will and having no CL football

So on that basis alone I cast my vote to win 4th above the Cup if I were made to choose between the two

I agree,if we were still coasting in 3rd place we would all want an FA Cup win.
However that's not the case now and it's definitely 4th place for me over the Cup.

21 years since we last won the FA or even been in the FA cup final is disgraceful, we blew it in the semi final a couple of times, we should have won against Newcastle and the less said about losing to Portsmouth the better. The memory of fourth place will fade but a FA cup win never will.

But it will still just be a memory

Right now we are kind of at a cross roads

potentially coming fourth and gaining CL football/money could be a spring board that attracts better players and helps us keep our best players which leads us to bigger and better things and a period of sustained success

Where as FA cup win without CL football could see our best players wanting to leave and our targets being reduced to lesser players which could see us slip back to midtable or best of the rest status.

Ok neither option has any guaranteed outcome, but recent history and knowledge of current football suggests we have more chance of building and sustaining a period of success if we make CL for next year than we will have if we win the cup and don't have it.

I think as a club we need to be taking the opportunities to progress not the short term success of a cup final
