I rather think anyone telling the world he or she would stop supporting Spurs if we signed an openly gay player would not only be letting everyone know he was a rubbish human being, he'd also be showing all of us what a shit Spurs fan he was too.

The reason I said what I said is that I doubt even homophobic people would actually stop supporting their club over a gay player wearing the shirt

But I think there are a lot more people who believe homosexuality is wrong and would oppose or feel embarrassed by the club having an openly gay player

I wouldn't abuse a player for being gay but the mob would. We've all seen some of the neanderthals at the Lane, same as any others fans who just abuse players constantly.

When bigots call straight players gay as a means of abuse, it's because those bigots think that being gay is somehow wrong or worse etc. That doesn't change if the victim is gay.

I agree with the rest of your post, though. A significant proportion of discrimination is generational in nature.
