Pompey consider Kaboul

Portsmouth eye defensive swoop

Portsmouth are reported to have made an enquiry for Tottenham's Younes Kaboul.

The want-away French stopper has struggled at White Hart Lane following his summer move from Auxerre.

Kaboul, 22, has seen his chances limited under Juande Ramos and he seems set to depart after criticizing the Spaniard.

Now Pompey could offer him a route out of the club and to the South Coast.

Harry Redknapp is looking to bolster his defence and he maintains an interest in Rennes stopper John Mensah.

Rennes are already preparing for Mensah's departure and are said to be looking to land Dynamo Kiev's Pape Diakhate.

No quotes or anything, think its just a re hash of the story about a month ago. i personally think its too early to give up on Kaboul, a loan move to Pompey could be the better option.

Depends on his mentality.. he needs to mature and stop going all over the media with his opinions... But like everyone said, he has potential. I'm torn, will just be happy with whatever decision Juande takes in this matter...

Would like him to stay, also buy an experienced CB. Sell Rocha, Gardner, Lee and posibly Chimbo.

if it was a loan deal for half or a whole season then yes, if not i reckon we should retain him. i think working with tony adams every week could be what he needs whilst he builds up his experience

i suppose if we've got diarra in our sights Kaboul would be a sacrifice we use to broker a deal? At the moment though Woodgate and a fragile King surely give Kaboul a bettter chance of first team action than a fit *****ball and Distin? I'm pretty sure Harry loves Linvoy Primus too so when he's fit it would leave Kaboul 4th choice at pompey.

Even a neutral observer would agree being a spurs reserve is better than a Pomey reserve.

Actually thinking about it sitting on Pomey bench would be easier becasue you'll be allowed to gamble and drink and you won't have to endure double fitness sessions during the season.

this one does seem to have legs as his agent has said portmouth have informed the club they want him and its down to the club now. I'm split if I want him to stay or not. The potential is there but how long can we wait.

Its a tough call as to who I prefer out of him or daws. We need to by an experienced centre back and that will push kaboul into reserve football which won't help him and certainly won't help the club

really, if they are going to stump up 8 million then i suppose he can go. if we dont recoup what we paid then we are just getting stroked ta fook.

im suprised no-one has mentioned a potential for a swap or p-ex for diarra, i personally wouldnt mind that as long as another cb was brought in. although i do agree he has potential. also krancjar is class.

I think most people had mentioned that, but as Diarra has already nailed his colours to the mast, it doesn't seem liely at all.

also why the hell would Pompey swap a proven quality DM for an unproven CB of roughly the same age?

because he quite clearly doesnt want to be there long term and if the chance arose to sell him (which they will have to do sooner or later) and get a player they are interested in then why wouldnt they?

Pompey are gonna be an all African outfit at this rate, maybe thats why Spursking doesn't post here as frequently (check out Porstmouth forums for a poster named Pompey King)

And when was the last time Levy failed at least to break even on a transfer deal?

decent point, but untill recently we didn't really spend 'stupid money' on players... I'd consider £8m for Kaboul stupid money unless you're willing to give him 3 years.

Levy lost £1m (at least) on Andy Reid, probably the same on Murphy though admitedly the latter is at the end of his career

Well, the reasoning behind buying Kaboul was that he'd develop into a top-class CB in a couple of seasons. We'd have had to spend about the same on Curtis Davies.

True, we took 'small' hits on Reidy and Murphy (makes you laugh, really, when just 20 years ago the £2m we paid for Gazza was briefly a record), but those are the exceptions that prove the rule. Of the players we can be pretty confident will be offloaded this summer, the only one we're likely to make a loss on is Gardner, for obvious reasons.

I think Kaboul's recent interviews have probably cooked his goose as far as his Spurs career is concerned, although Olympic-standard grovelling and Levy's reluctance to take a substantial hit may save him. A p-ex seems most likely, but I don't think it will be for Diarra (he and Kaboul should get on really well), but Kranjcar and Muntari are both possibilities. Although you have to think where either would fit in.
