Hoddle
There was a game in our return to the old 1st Div- It was 0-0 and Hoddle was the only sub.
The entire stadium was singing "WE WANT HODDLE"
Eventually he came on and scored the winner!
I was a youngster at the time but it left a deep impression on me

Even though his best days were behind him I reckon we win the CL Final either Dembele in the team.
I agree. We were more interested in getting a fee for him in the January window and was never replaced. I suspect Levy didn't envisage us getting to CL final.

For me has to be Hoddle, although Gazza was pretty special. Was too young to see Mackay or Greaves but am I am sure they would have been right up there.

I just remember watching Hoddle and wondering how he could spray those passes around so accurately. It felt like he was threading the eye of the needle with the times the ball arrived at perfect pace and on a 6 pence to setup Archibald and Crooks. Then the shooting off both feet. Cannot even guess how much he would be worth in todays market.
I recall the commentators hyperbole surrounding Mounts side-foot half volley from last week… Hoddle scored at least three thru the laces full volleys from a not dissimilar position - think it was against notts forest; Man U; and Liverpool or England. Darn. I’ll have to go and ‘endure’ some of his spectacular goals on YouTube again ??‍♂️

Gascoigne. Easily number 1 for me. Of course Hoddle/Waddle/Greaves/Perryman/Jennings/King/Modric were all great players also :)

Everyone picking Hoddle.

I just missed his time, have seen highlights etc but people picking him what was it about him or his play that made everyone love him so much?

And is he our best midfielder ever?

Genius. Magician. Outstanding passing. Could land a pass on a six pence. Genuinely two footed. I never saw John White live but he is without doubt the best midfielder we’ve had since I first started going in 1976.

I just remembered that he was so good that he was didn’t have to tuck his shirt in. No seriously, just think that a 26 year old Jack Grealish has just gone for £100 million. 26 year old Hoddle playing today is going for at least £175 million in today’s market and money. Now figure out how many players in the world can command this kind of fee and that is without a striker’s premium.

Hoddle by far followed by Pat Jennings, David Ginola, Gazza and Bale.

I just asked my son (31) and he said Defoe.

his best goal for me was against Bolton (Watford one aside) in the FA Cup Paxton Road end he hit a ball from the right side of the area not far the corner flag on the shelf side that flew into the far corner

Ossie was a better player though and I think Gazza would have eclipsed both of them if he hadn't been crazy he literally had it all
