Everyone picking Hoddle.

I just missed his time, have seen highlights etc but people picking him what was it about him or his play that made everyone love him so much?

And is he our best midfielder ever?
The game is about glory. I am sure you know Danny Blanchflower's famous quote. Glenn Hoddle's game was about glory, he didn't want to bore the opposition to death, he did things with a flourish.
He was one of our own, he played for us for 12 years. We spent the 1977-78 season in the old second division. We were promoted back to the first division at the first attempt - just. We were third and only just, our promotion was decided on goal difference. Without Hoddle we wouldn't have been promoted. I don't like to think what would have happened if we had stayed down. And he was 20 years old.
I go back to 1961, 60 years a supporter. Most of my other favourite players predate Hoddle. But in a team of my favourite players over those 60 years his would be the first name on the team sheet.

Ginola, was worth the ticket money (that my dad was paying) on his own
This is absolutely true but just as well because there was nothing else on the pitch or in the dugout at the time that was worth getting out of bed to watch. A genius.

Lots of great players over the years including Gazza, Ginola, Waddle, Bale, Modric and many, many more but Hoddle is THE reason I became a Spurs supporter as a youngster. Absolutely amazing footballer!

I think your favourite players/emotional bond are formed in those early Spurs supporting years - 8 to 14 - where you can idolise and adore something without judgement and you aren't bogged down in your views of the commercial and business aspect of football or other fans banter etc. When you just live to watch or follow the game for 90 minutes and spend the rest of the week pretending to be your favourite player in the playground.

So while their are historical players that I adore because of family anecdotes and history and highlights( The Greavsies, Hoddles, Perrymans etc) and recent players such as Kane and Modric who I have had absolute admiration for and of their abilities...

My favourite players as a kid were:

Teddy
Ginola
Ledders

Hoddle is the reason I'm a Spurs fan so it has to be him. I loved the entire 86-87 team though, especially the midfield 5. Hoddle, Waddle and Ardiles in the same team was amazing.

My favourite player was Teddy. My second favourite was Graham Roberts. But the best I've seen since being a Spurs fan (1981) is Hoddle.

When other fans make fun of Spurs and tease us about not being a big club I point out that we've underachieved considering we've had so many great players play for us, in their prime too. The point being despite the lack of success we can still attract that calibre of player.

It's scandalous we haven't won the title since 1961 and not won any kind of recognised trophy for 13 years.

Too young to have seen Hoddle as I'm an 80's kid, but having watched lots of footage I can easily see why people chose him.

For me it's probably Ginola. Late 90's was when I really got into football and he was such a great player to watch.

Edit: In more recent times, Luka Modric. I often felt he was more important/better than Bale. Although Bale was fantastic too, just less consistent but with more of a high explosive impact style.

Genius. Magician. Outstanding passing. Could land a pass on a six pence. Genuinely two footed. I never saw John White live but he is without doubt the best midfielder we’ve had since I first started going in 1976.
And that is so rarer than people think, and so much more powerful on the pitch than is usually appreciated.

Reading through this thread, it strikes me that we have had more than our fair share of wonderful players over the years... It would be nice to have a few more in our squad today... I don't think Uncle Joe follows SC though!

Hoddle was a great player but for me Ardilles was the better player he gave him room to play but pound for pound I think the best we had was Gazza who played in a largely average side he had such strength, desire, ability, his dribbling was fantastic he could ping a pass but the thing he had over Hoddle was that desire to win and turn matches on there head. He could literally win a game on his own

Portsmouth in the Cup always comes to mind and he literally won the game on his own 1-0 down and we were going out he took the game by the scruff of the neck scored twice and dominated the game it was an immense performance. The injury took so much away but he could play a truly exceptional player who we never quite saw the best of but wow he was special

I wonder how many people have chosen a player who was around at the time they first started supporting Spurs? For me that’s the case, and it’s Ginola.

I’m born in 78 but Gazza’a the best English player/talent I’ve ever seen. There’s been better English players but Gazza was pure talent

For me personally, Rafa VDV edges out Modric. Modric had ability I had never seen at Spurs or in the PL but he loses points for wanting a Chelsea move and allegedly forcing a move away.

Rafa took us to another level and you always felt like we would win the a game where he was in the team. His signing was possibly my favourite as well given that we allegedly outwitted LFC to the transfer.
