I think that January will be extremely important this year; not only is there a cup semi, and an FA Cup game, there are four "should win" games as well. If we pick up 12 points from our four games we should be comfortably safe, and depending on our christmas run of form, even looking to break into the European places.

Also, we need to add the exiled players into the UEFA squad, and possibly even sign some players. I do not want to see too many changes, if I had the decision, I would sign:

A back-up experienced GK (assuming Cesar leaves)
An experienced centre-back to play with Dawson (if Woodgate's injury is bad) e.g. Samba
A proper target man e.g. Guillaume Hoarau

Samba and Hoarau are both 24, so experienced but with potential, and Hoarau has been in great form this season, he's not the most skillful forward, but he's an absolute beast, and I'm sure he could cope with the physical side of the premiership. A target man would compliment the other strikers, Campbell's like Defoe, Bent likes to get in behind, and Pav is a creative centre-forward, more than a striker.

I do feel, however, that the main area to sort out is centre-mid, but not in January, we need to wait until the summer, when it will be easier to sign (and sell) players without being held to ransom.

So who's on your list?

Personally id go for:-

A decent Center Midfielder - Someone who can hold our midfield together and do all the dirty work that will allow the likes of Modric and co to do what they do best - attack. So someone like Toulalan, Senna, Diarra - along those lines.

A creative forward who can assist/score goals - We miss Berba/Keane, theirs no question about that. But they are in the past and we have to work with what we have, and in my opinion, we have three strikers who are all goalscorers and none of whom can help create goalscoring oppurtunities for one another. So we need someone here who can chip in with the 10 or so goals a season, but also assist 10-15 for his teamates - Arshavin fits the bill and would be ideal.

A solid center half - who knows what for, backup or first team? But with woodgate and king available, whoever this guy is, is not going to get a game. So realistically what kind of quality can we aim for? Who would be willing to come to the club already knowing he could be playing second fiddle to Woody / King.

Thats all really. Would like to add though that I wouldn't mind if we bought glen johnson and decided to use corluka as a center half. That would make perfect sense to me as I feel corluka is better suited to that position anyway.

I don't think we need that much. We have Corluka, Woodgate, King and Dawson at centre back which is a great set of options.

In midfield we should only buy if someone special becomes available like Diarra. A lot of the names mentionned as our midfield enforcer to be are no better than Zokora or O'Hara.

If we continue with 4-4-1-1 then we have a good set of options up front if we have FC until the end of the season.

We need stability and get our players together as a team not replace everyone who isn't perfect as we know the next player we buy also won't be perfect. January is not a good time to buy but if someone special is available then sure we should go for him.

To sum up: my wishlist - no one

if it's wish lists we're talking

back up keeper - a LB who could also deputise as CB (or vice versa - I think we've got one already in RR but it doesn't seem he's rated by HR) - a DM - a big/strong striker

Jan is always a very difficult time to buy, with that in mind we need....

A CB (Upson if available at a sensible price)
A back up GK if Caesar leaves
A Striker (a loan signing, maybe Adriano as Inter want shot of him)
A DM/CM (Diarra, YaYa Toure if Barca want shot of him)

Heres my top 3 for each position

No 2 GK 1. Joe Hart (if City sign a top class keeper) 2. Hennesey 3. Ben Foster
Centre Back 1. Ryan Nelsen 2. Richard Dunne 3. Daniel 'Cata' Diaz
Winger/Support Striker 1. Andrei Arshavin 2. Joe Cole 3. Robbie Keane

I dont think a top quality defensive midfielder is likely until the summer. But i think we've got enough quality for this season. Next season, when we'll be looking to finish in the top 6 again i'd go with:

1. Toulalan 2. Inler 3. Veloso

Does anyone else think that Modric, having adapted to the PL, may now in a position to play in central midfield in a 4-4-2 in the same way that Fabregas does for the Gooners?

He has become a lot stronger on the ball since his arrival and is better at tracking back, whilst it would allow him to be even more involved. Clearly he would need a real enforcer next to him, like Kovac when he plays for Croatia, but Zokora is rapidly improving (I have to confess I am in danger of becoming a Zokora convert if he can keep up his his most recent performances) and if we have the opportunity to upgrade upon Zokora to someone like Diarra, say, then all the better.

So what do you guys think?

Otherwise, I would say we need a:
- LW (Gio is coming back however let's face it, he hasn't shown reason for us to assume he will be starting regularly, either in an attacking second striker role or left wing role)
- CB/RB (I think all the evidence is pointing to just how bad King's injury is and that it really hasn't improved, despite having had a season and a half out. Furthermore, if Woodgate's injury is as bad as feared, we will need a CB to partner Dawson. Alternatively, if that someone is Corluka, then we will need a RB, and although Gunter he looks like he could do a job, I'm not 100% convinced by him. Plus I think he adds very little to our attacking play)
- Creative Striker (if only to reduce our dependence on Modric. If Modric gets injured we really suffer, so I think this is a necessity. Even if Modric isn't moved into CM, then having a creative second striker to link the midfield with Pavluychenko will give us so many more options and a strong plan B (if A is not working, then maybe move Modric to LW and SS plays in place of Modric).

I am undecided about CM. I think Jenas is good, but he is inconsistent. I'm going to say not the most pressing of issues and can wait until the season end. However as above if a better DM than Zokora becomes available then by all means. It might even allow us to play Modric in CM too.

EDIT: 2nd goalkeeper would be useful too

Agree with most of what is mentioned above, but i'd like to see Glen Johnson come in, Hutton has a serious injury and not the first (we may have another King on our hands) and as Corluka can move into the centre and Gunter is still young we could do with a new right-back. I'm sure Johnson would be glad to be back with harry and in London again.

I think thats where he should end up in the long run. He just doesn't score enough goals to be playing where he is. I would even go as far to say that theres a chance that Jenas and Modric could become our 1st choice central midfield. I'd prefer we get a top quality defensive midfielder, but that will be very hard to achieve. However, Jenas and Modric could work well for us. I know it sounds a bit too attack minded, but Jenas has been playing deep quiete a bit this season. And he and Zokora have similar strengths in midfield anyway (too similar in fact.)

I could see a midfield pairing of Modric and Jenas being similar to the Carrick and Jenas pairing of a few years back. The only difference would be that Jenas would sit deeper. Huddlestone would act as cover for Modric and Zokora would cover Jenas. Although i'd be a bit concerned with a Zokora and Modric pairing. I think Jenas has better positional awareness than Zokora, and we would be less exposed with Jenas instead. Although O'Hara is capable of playing in from the left, and playing a similar role that Davids played if need be. But if we can keep hold of the ball better further up the pitch, it could work well with the players we have.

Arshavin or similar is definitely needed. He can play on the left or as a support striker, which is exactly where we are short. Would also love a mighty DM, but to be honest, if we could only make one signing I think someone like Arshavin is more important as a midfield pairing from jenas/zok/hudd can keep the defence protected until the summer.

I would love to have more versatile players like corluka here, but for the midfield and forward position.

So my priority list:

Left Midfielder / Winger (Probably Supporting Striker):
1. Arshavin 2. Zhirkov (Dont know if he can play Supporting Striker) 3. Kranjcar

Full / Half Back (Players who can switch between the defence positions if needed, corluka, zokora like)
I dont really have a player list here, there are some quiet good defenders out there.

CM / DM
1. Inler 2. Veloso 3. Diarra

If Zokora keeps up his form we could skip the cm/dm, but on a long term i would put him with modric in midfield and play 2 strikers. I know some people are very pro-jenas here, but im not that convinced about his qualities, but this is only my opinion, so dont attack me for that.

1. Backup Keeper
2. Centre Back
3. Striker

Though we need a decent player on the left hand side I think we have another cover until the Summer Window. Ditto DM, unless the right player is available we need to take our time and get the best we can.
