Vertonghen has a sulk on because he's been playing next to fucking Dawson and Rose for 12 months. I'd be fucking pissed if I were him too, doesn't mean we should sell him though, he's still class. Sandro is not broken. Lamela is our most talented player who hasn't even had a chance to impress us yet, senseless to want to sell him. I can see the argument for selling Ade, although he is incredibly talented.

These players aren't a 'much of a muchness'. We should be looking to make Vertonghen, Sandro and Lamela the spine of our team, because we won't be getting much better than them any time soon.

Faith is a wonderful thing.

Squad, with u21 players (‘u21’), Club trained (‘C’) and other Association trained players (‘A’) marked.

It is clear that we need a minimum of 4 Club trained players for UEFA – and likely for PL rules within 18 months – and a minimum of 8 home grown players (including club trained), a number which FA will increase.

We have only a few over 21 Club trained players and just about meet the home grown rule (although we have youngsters coming through which will allow us to more than meet both criteria, so we need to be careful to bring through our youngsters to help us meet those targets.

I’d suggest, in order to ensure the youngsters do come through that we should look at a squad of about 22 players, with the 3 places reserved for young club trained players.

Goalkeepers (3)
Lloris, Gomes, Friedel, Archer (u21)

Gomes will leave as a free agent as his contract has ended, whilst Freidel no longer warrants being 2nd place and Archer does not have the experience to step up to being no 2.

So we need to buy a back up goalkeeper, with either Freidel as no 3 goalkeeper with Archer loaned out to get experience in the championship or as no 3 keeper .

So that gives : Lloris, New Buy, Freidel or Archer

Full Backs (4)
Walker (A), Naughton (A), Fredericks (‘C’) Rose (‘C’), Assou-Ekottu, Fryers (A)

On the right, Fredericks would be a huge risk as back up RB as he has limited experience in the Championship, so I’d keep Naughton and loan out Fredericks for experience, reviewing that position in January.

Assou-Ekotto seems inevitably to be sold and its clear we need a new no 1 LB (possibly the most difficult position to buy).

I’d like Rose as back up, but if he were sold leaving Fryers as back up, it would not worry me, he could also provide back up as CB. If Rose stayed, we might loan out Fryers to gain experience in PL

So that gives : Walker (A), Naughton (A), New LB, Rose (‘C’) or Fryers (A)

Centre Backs (4)
Dawson (A), Kaboul, Chiriches, Vertonghen

So many injury problems this season. The real question is whether Kaboul will now remain fit and back to a a decent standard or not. If not we require a replacement for him.

Dawson at 30 was the one injury free dependable CB this season, but ideally we need an upgrade. With Cardiff being relegated I’d look to bring back Caulker, who would need minimal settling in time, knows PL and would also boost our club trained quota,

So that gives us Chiriches, Vertonghen plus 2 of Dawson (A), Caulker (‘C’) , Kaboul or New buy.

Centre Midfield (4 +u21’s)
Carroll (u21) , Holtby, Bentelab (u21)
Sandro, Capoue, Livermore (‘C’)
Dembele, Paulinho

In my view this area was the cause of much of Spurs problems this season – a total lack of creativity in CM.

I don’t think it fair to rely on Carroll or Bentaleb to play most PL games – but I think between them they could play most of them and gain much needed PL experience , and hopefully show their creative streak. Holtby has started to show at Fulham the sort of form he had at Shalke, – whether he can step up as no 1 creative CM at Spurs is the question. If he cannot we need to replace him with a better creative CM.

Sandro – this season has not looked the player he was before injury, and needs to be assessed when he has a pre-season under his belt as to whether he will get back his form. Capoue looked good for about 3 games before injury but pretty average after it before being injured again, so has spent almost 50% of the season injured and a third of the season looking average making him difficult to assess. Meanwhile Livermore has looked good on loan at Hull – better than an average looking Capoue and a not match fit Sandro ! So I’d revisit the match fitness of Sandro and Capoue after a pre-season.

Neither box to box midfielders, Paulhino and Dembele had the best of seasons, the first could have arrived knackered after the Confederations cup but also moving from a weak Brazillian regional league to PL and possibly wanting to avoid injury to make the Brazil WC squad, whilst Dembele has suffered from injuries. Think the manager needs to choose one of them – there really is not room for two !.

So that gives us :

Holtby/New Upgrade, Carroll (u21) , Bentelab (u21), Sandro or Capoue, Livermore (‘C’), Paulhino or Dembele

Attacking Midfielders/Wingers (6 + u21’s)
Eriksen, Mason (‘C’), Pritchard (u21), Lennon (‘C’), Lamela, Chadli, Falque, Townsend (‘C’’), Sigurdsson

Eriksen needs a back up, and I’d suggest that role could be shared between the previously injury prone Mason and Pritchard : that way we can assess both players abilities to fulfill that role.

Lamela – looked great on Youtube, but we have not really seen him in the PL due to injuries, could also play a no 10 role or as a right sided striker. But I’d like the new manager’s assessment on whether he is kept or sold for both club sake and player’s sake.

Chadli has had some decent games in his first season, both as an AM and unexpectedly as a creative CM and should have a much better second season.
.
Townsend has looked a yard off the pace since injury in mid season but after a pre-season could be back at his best, shorn of the ridiculous instructions to shoot at every opportunity. Could be an important season to show what he can do in PL. Lennon seems to have lost the yard of pace to beat his man and put in a decent cross, and unless he proves different in pre-season with more assists and goals think its time we moved him on finally.

Sigurdsson scores some useful goals, but otherwise not sure we need him if Lamela lives up to his billing. Falque is good but not good enough for me, time to move on.

So that gives us :
Eriksen, Mason (‘C’), Pritchard (u21), Chadli, Townsend (‘C’), 2 from Lamela, Sigurddson, Lennon (‘C’) or upgrade, ,

Strikers (2 + u21’s)
Adebayor, Soldado, Kane (u21)

With more creativity from CM’s and AM’s, Soldado should have the platform to score goals – something desperately missed from him this season – so the question is whether his confidence is shot in PL (and needs to move back to Spain) or whether a new manager can get him scoring again in pre-season.

Adebayor is clearly talented and can score goals – question is whether a new manager and he can get on.

Harry Kane is looking a good prospect : we need to see how he shapes up with more games and still aged 20 has time on his side.

I think its likely that only one of Adebayor and Soldado are here next season so its Kane (u21) plus 2 from , Adebayor, Soldado and new striker.

Total – 23 Plus u21’s (which includes Mason and Rose or Fryers as over 21 players)

Hopefully FDB as HC and something like this as our core next season – a squad that can change between 433 and 4231 quite easily:

Lloris
NEW older and experienced GK

WalkerNEW Vertonghen NEW
Fredericks Kaboul Chiriches Fryers or NEW experienced backup
(Chiriches)

Paulinho Sandro Eriksen
Bentaleb Capoue Holtby

Lamela NEW ∕ Soldado NEW
Townsend Soldado / NEW Chadli
Kane

With EL as well, Pritchard and Carroll are among those who we'll may keep instead of another loan – but there are a lot of players we can sell or release to make room for some improvements in and for more use of our U21-players.

Friedel
Gomes
Naughton
Rose
Assou-Ekotto
Dawson
Dembele
Livermore
Sigurdsson
Lennon
Adebayor

I'd bring in an old head, as we have done in the past, that worked so well initially with Parker and Davids. I'd think about A. Cole as a left back, if we could afford him. We need PL experience and 'Jol's' right mentality. But amongst all this we want a (playing!) captain. Vital. My brain is dead, which happens with increasing frequency, and I have forgotten some very good ideas from others for the latter (the captain, not the brain. Though ideas for that too are welcome.)

The guy should be more professional no matter who he is playing with. If verts or anyone for that matter cant give 100% everytime they play for us they can f off and we can replace them with someone with some character and backbone

Looks good, but...

Stekelenburg...?

He's been shocking for Fulham. Been benched for a while in place of Stockdale. He'd be on big wages and I'd rather have Friedel as a no #2.

Wouldn't change much from this at all. That squad gets the ball forward from the central midfield positions, maintains efficient possession to protect the back line, gets beat up on by no one, and puts in a proper fight for top four. Good stuff, world famous DaSpurs Stamp of Approval for you.

I'm trying to keep the new players to a minimal to maintain stability. I'm not going to list names since we don't know who the manager will be and I haven't seen most of the players linked to us play so I'm in no position to judge potential signings.

Friedel's and Gomes' contracts expire this summer leaving us with Lloris and Archer. Hopefully we keep Lloris. For the No. 2 spot I'd like to see Archer given a chance.

GK: Lloris, Archer
Out: Friedel, Gomes

I'll start with RB for defense. Keep Walker as our starting RB and Naughton as backup. Naughton isn't a bad RB. Good enough to play backup. I don't think there is a point in replacing him right now. Perhaps Fredericks will turn out to be better than him, but until then I'd leave it as is. For LB I'd sell Rose and BAE and keep Fryers. Fryers is still young and inexperienced so he may turn out to be a good player for us. At CB I'd like to see as little upheaval as possible. So for this scenario we still have Vertonghen plus Chiriches. Deciding between Dawson and Kaboul is difficult. While Kaboul is superior to Dawson, he has been struggling with injuries. However, since he has started playing again he may have put the injuries behind him. Difficult decision really. For now, however, I'll say Kaboul out. However they're interchangeable for me.

RB: Walker, Naughton
LB: New LB, Fryers
CB: Vertonghen, Chiriches, Dawson, New CB
Out: Rose, BAE, Kaboul

Midfield is the most difficult because of the number of players we have. It also depends on what system the new manager uses. I'll start with wingers. We have Falque, Lennon, Townsend, Lamela, and Chadli. It doesn't seem likely that Falque will ever play for us. For the sake of his career I'd let him move on. For the other 4 it depends on how we're playing. As much as I'd like to keep him I'd sell Lennon. He's 27 and just hasn't kicked on to be the player he could be. He shows glimpses of what he can do but he just doesn't do it often. Townsend has potential, but lacks a brain. While I know some would sell him over Lennon, he has age on his side. Perhaps the message will get through to him that he needs to be a team player and use his head. Lamela simply hasn't played much and Chadli has shown his usefulness. So I'd have Lamela and Townsend as our RWs and Chadli and a new player as our LWs.

For central midfielders we have Sandro, Capoue, Paulinho, Dembele, Bentaleb, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Mason, Livermore, Carroll, and Holtby. Right off the bat I'd sell Sigurdsson and Livermore. I'd also loan out Mason, Carroll, and Bentaleb. Mason is only in League 1 so he could do with a Championship loan. Carroll and Bentaleb should have loans to other Prem teams. This leaves us with Sandro, Capoue, Paulinho, Dembele, Eriksen, and Holtby. This midfield could work well if the manager utilizes everybody properly. Perhaps tweak it with one out and one in, but I'm going to leave it as is.

RW: Lamela, Townsend
LW: Chadli, New LW
CM: Sandro, Capoue, Paulinho, Dembele, Holtby, Eriksen
Loan: Mason, Carroll, Bentaleb, Pritchard
Out: Sigurdsson, Livermore, Lennon

For strikers I'd keep Kane as he has shown improvement and would be good for us a 3rd striker. Between Adebayor and Soldado I'd sell Ade. He's on huge wages and we know how he works. I still think in the right system Soldado can come good. So we just need someone to replace Ade.

Strikers: New Striker, Soldado, Kane
Out: Ade

This gives us a total of 9 leaving permanently between releases and sales, 3 loans, and 4 new players. A LB, CB, LW, and striker. There wouldn't be as many new players as last summer making it easier to bed players in.

Unless Marshall gets a better offer in the Prem, coming to London, to a big club, to stay in the Prem, and receive a salary increase isn't a bad proposition especially when you consider his age and the lack of prospects down the road for a big move. He might also figure Lloris wouldn't be around for long, so be willing to wait a year or two and provide competition to another option if we even decided to bring another in.

Konoplyanka is also not an unrealistic option. There is a plethora of quality LW's allegedly looking for moves this summer, and Konoplyanka would not be particularly high on the lists given his being from the Ukrainian league. I think we've a more than decent shot at him, especially since he's had a recent chance to visit our facilities.
