We had this in the Eto'o thread on Friday:

Pay no attention to the Evening Standard report of yesterday. I have been told on good authority that this is completely untrue. In fact I know where the chairman will be on Sunday and it certainly has nothing to do with flying out the country or transfer business.

I did ask Silver82 to let me or one of the other Mods/RRs to PM his source, but no reply. It really wouldn't surprise me if the whole story was made-up bollocks, though.

to be fair though, i heard about this last week, not from the evening standard. It was on goal.com i believe and a few other sites.

but goal.com and a few other sites you post links from often are horseshit and have no quotes - ever

Think this is very likely nothing at all.

Ramos (like all the players and coaches) has got the next few weeks off and has taken his wife on holiday back to Spain to visit their sons and daughter. He'll have his mobile on for emergencies (a la Jol and when Arnesen left), but certainly wont be working over there - this next 4 weeks is practically his entire holiday leave all year.

Levy and Commolli will be busy but I've heard nothing to suggest there's any truth in this Barcelona visit (unlike the Porto one a week or two ago).
Dan, help me understand something here please.
You said that Ramos has a month holiday! You said that we'll want to sign at least one player before the Euro which starts in a month. We are aware that although Comolli and Levy does the transfer dealings, it has to be in correspondance with Ramos' need in the squad.
Therefore, how is it that Ramos is away and IF Levy is in Spain or Portugal for signings then surely Ramos has to be made aware?
I dunno, i can't really put my finger on what you've said!!!
Help me understand please.

I don't know the actual truth of the matter, but I can't see why you're struggling with the above scenario...?

It seems like a false confusion to me. The triumvirate id the targets, then Commolli and Levy go after them and finally Levy and another member of the management team (Alexander??) sign off on the finance. What exactly should Ramos be doing once the targets have been id'd??

Wow! if signing players was as easy as that!!! So Ramos has a short list and says GO GET THEM!!! and they do it all while he relax! I don't think so somehow!!!

Jol may have been Dutch but that doesn't meen he was super relaxed and imho the efforts of getting us to two fifths took it's toll in terms of accumulated tiredness .

As Sloth says , this is pretty much all the holiday the playing and coaching staffs will get .
For success to be sustainable they have to work hard the rest of the year and encouraged to take proper holiday when they can .

It's not black and white , players need to feel they are important and wanted so there will be occassions when the head coach needs to talk to them before signing , but this really is the time for the DOF and the people holding the purse strings to earn their keep .

OK, where do I say Ramos id's the targets by himself? Is it the word triumverate you have a problem with, lol? Should i have said trio? Or is that a bit complicated too?? Maybe i should have just said the 'three'??

And where is the implication that id'ing, going after and securing targets is simple. It's not, it's tough.

You seem to be labouring under the misaprehension however that Ramos goes to all the matches, scouts every player, negotiates every deal, raises the finance himself and signs off on every contract. Or if you're not and it is in fact as i wrote in my original post, where's the problem with Ramos being on holiday now??

In our structure the coach, be it Jol or Ramos, is by far the least involved of the 4 in transfers. He'll only really be involved for a brief bit of charm/sharing his ideology - often just a 20 minute chat. The other 3 do all the negotiations and practical business. I'm sure the helicopter is on standby to whisk him away if need be, but allowing JR some much needed R&R is a big priority too. Remember what a big deal it was seen to be to bring Jol back from holiday when Arnesen left.

There's a report in the Daily Mail saying that Levy didn't fly out to Barcelona yesterday.

well, listen.

barcelona is one of the best clubs in the world, despite a bad season. all of their first teamers are way beyond our grasp, so unless Levy was in Barcelona for some Espanyol players (possibly Kameni or Jarque?), then this is bull-crap.

but one things for sure - eto'o, dos santos, deco - impossible for us to get. IMPOSSIBLE. Eto'o does not wanna step down from friggin barcelona to tottenham (i know that sounds really bad, but work with me, please) and why would dos santos want to leave THE best club in the world for nurturing young talent??

So yeah. its all my opinion but i seriously doubt we can sign any of their players. We couldn't even land Guily ffs.

I think there will be alot of transfer action before the euro's, but I doubt we will have any discussions with Barca.

If it were up to me though Iniesta and Xavi would be incredible signings, would not be too fussed about Eto'o, Dos Santos is staying at Barca for definite. All of these are dreams though and I would be very suprised if any of them knew who Spurs are let alone sign for us.

I half agree with you on this! I dont see us getting Etoo or Dos santos he said he want stay at Barca anyway now! I think we could get some of there players though but not the big name ones we have been linked with, Maybe someone like Thuram who I saw this weekend is being linked with A*snal. Ive been thinking for along time he would be good signing for us expeinced and a winner and might be able to get him on a free as not a regualar started for Barcalona!

I'd like to know where this idea of a smokescreen in football transfers comes from? Am I right in thinking that it is being suggested that we are using the press to make our rivals think we are interested in one player, but are in fact after another. The only reason i could think as why we'd do that is stop other clubs knowing players are available. But, surely in this day and age, the players agent has let every club with a bank account aware of the players availability. I can't for one moment imagine there is a single player in the Barca squad, that could potentially leave that hasn't been offered all over Europe. I just think the smokescreen idea is something ITKs and the media use, to make things sound more interesting. For example, if the Eto rumours are just a smokescreen to divert attention from the fact we are after Dos Santos, what would we gain from that?

How can you have a smokescreen when smoking is banned in public? The only way it to arrange it outdoors in a sheltered place and even then a gust of wind can mess everything up!

In terms of what should Ramos be doing when a 'mark' id ID'd...well, as long as it will not interfere with their diet...he could make them a sandwich and cup of tea? We are NOT a club that treats guests, or potential business associates, in a way that might appear 'cheap'! We are Yids and we are Football Royalty (in'it?).
In reality, I see no reason why Juande can't be kept 'au fait' with developments etc via that new speaking machine....the Telephone'....some call it?
As has already been pointed out the important people in the final part are well able to conduct a successful 'close' on their own (IF it becomes necessary!).
I am getting that strange kind of 'deja vu' feeling again....but maybe I am just an old romantic? COYS!
