Signed for £8m on deadline day in 2010 if you needed any reminders. According to reports, went from £65k/wk to £70k/wk when he joined us. According to reports his value was crashing as deadline day approached and Mourinho wanted to get rid. 27 years old when he signed. 28 goals, 18 assists in 77 games.

Now that we are back in CL and seem to have most of the squad needs met, do you see anyone this window that would be a VdV-esque signing for us? A top, international player who may become available to us for a good price through a new manager or not preferred against new signings? Playing style and what Poch wants in a player should be considered, but for this thread probably shouldn't be gospel. Let's look around at the market and make some guesses at possibilities and dream a little bit!

More likely rolling list:

1) Arda Turan 29yo (Barcelona ---> ???) Wages
2) "Isco" Francisco Román Alarcón Suárez 24yo (Real Madrid ---> ???) Wages
3) Kovacic (Real Madrid ---> ???)

Less likely rolling list:
1) Juan Mata 28yo (Manchester United ---> ???) Rival, fee, wages
2) Mario Götze 24yo (Bayern Munich ---> Borussia Dortmund http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/36853799) Wages
3) James Rodríguez 24yo (Real Madrid ---> ???) Wages

Amazing bit of deadline day work by Levy. Couldn't believe it when we signed him. Absolutely loved VdV. Just had that swagger that a few of the Spurs greats had. He'd never work in a Poch team but I'd love us to sign someone who could turn a game all on his own and have that certain magic in the way he does it.

Arda Turan would be todays equivalent. Not that I could see it happening, however he has had a bit of a nightmare since moving to Barca so his stock is quite low and there are some rumours around that they are looking to get rid.

Did great in a pressing system with Atletico as well.

Probably what we all would have said before the VdV signing. It was a big surprise. As I said very unlikely it would happen as with any transfer but it's what I would call today's equivalent.

I'd personally rather see us get all our business done well before the season starts and get a pre-season in all the players. None of the players bought after the start of last season were that successful.

That's a mighty tough call... i'll take whichever one can make me feel like this again;

He wasn't here for a long time, but he was here for a really, really good time. Bloody loved that bloke, he really had it all. I hope he enjoyed himself as much as i enjoyed having him at the Lane, genuine class act.

What were his wages at RM? All I can find is that he was on £70k/wk for us and this blurb from http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/13/sports/soccer/13iht-SOCCER.html?_r=0

The likes of Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Arjen Robben, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael van der Vaart and Royston Drenthe, the Dutch contingent at Real, are likely to be paid around €4 million a year.

and later in the article it says this

Too late. Madrid has Benzema now, and Huntelaar’s brief time has gone past.

The latest news Sunday was that he does not want to go to the Bundesliga — at least not on the €2 million-a-year salary that would halve his Madrid wage.

So I guess he was making €4 million a year, the same as everyone else? Which is €76k/wk and from some Googling, would have been circa £65k/wk

Nothing will match the day we signed him.

One of my favourite all time players. And that was before he signed for us.

Would love a 'bums off seats' player like him in our squad.

Javier Pastore? 27 years old, new manager, being linked to Pool of course which as we know, seals him coming to us.

I like him a lot but he's a luxury player, I don't think he'd adapt to the EPL.
