So near yet so Zaha: First bid is in for England kid, and it's not from United

22 Dec 2012 23:29

Instead it is Spurs who have lodged the first firm offer for the young winger, forcing United and Arsenal into action

Tottenham are ready to make an £8million bid for Crystal Palace starlet Wilfried Zaha – and spark an auction for his signature writes the Sunday People.
Spurs supremo Daniel Levy has been on Zaha’s trail for months, as Sunday People Sport first revealed, and the shrewd transfer operator will lodge an official offer shortly.

The package would see a guaranteed sum up front of around £6m, plus extras and bonuses, but it falls well short of what Palace dream they will get for the new England cap.
Manchester United are waiting in the wings to see how the first bid for Zaha plays out and will step in if it looks like Spurs are set to land the 20-year-old wonder-kid.
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been working overtime on Zaha since being alerted to his brilliance and would be prepared to sign him and let him stay at Palace for the rest of the season.
Zaha has told pals that he fancies the Old Trafford switch if the deal is right. Arsenal have yet to make a move but won’t let Zaha sign for their Premier League rivals withought a fight, even though manager Arsene Wenger has been angered by Palace boss Ian Holloway’s criticism of him.
Holloway has said that Zaha is going nowhere in January but it is hard to see how the Londoners can hold on to him if the Premier League big-hitters come calling.
Wenger sees him as an ideal replacement should contract rebel Theo Walcott leave during the transfer window.
The Spurs interest will surprise fans given they already have wide flyers in Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon.

I rather we give a chance to our very own championship winger before we spend money on another but this lad definitely is being hyped at the mo with Mark Bright saying he is the best to come out of Palace

This would be a great signing if we can beat off the opposition to his signiture, pacy, skillfull, scores goals, and from what I've seen can play on both flanks, could be a decent alternative to Willian imo.

That's an awful lot of pressure to put on somebody who is still a kid. Look at how long it took for Bale to really come good, I would love to get him, but not at the expense of improvements for today as well as the future.

I agree Willian is a fantastic player, but I think Zaha could come into the squad and add something straight away, and his price tag and wages are more realistic. Just saying that if it ends up that we cant afford Willian, this kid is a cheaper alternative.

I hope he stays the rest of the season with Palace and helps get them promoted

Promotion will be worth far more to them than what they could get for Zaha, would be suicide to sell him in January

Would be a good signing but I can't see him coming for anything less than £10m

Would rather Townsend be given a few more chances first. If we signed him would set Townsend back and doubt he would get on our bench anymore

If we do sign Zaha may as well try send Townsend the other way, like you say if Zaha come he'd very rarely get a game

File under "One for the Future", essentially a pointless signing in regards to our first 11 in the short and to be honest medium term. The guy isnt going to shift Lennon or Bale and will be behind Dempsey and Sig in ye olde pecking order.

He will need games so we will just have to loan him back out to develop, really not a January signing unless its dished up on a plate for us (He clearly has good potential). January is all about bringing in someone who can make that impact and difference on the pitch straight away.

The Star today

Tottenham are ready to offer £10m for 20-year-old Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, but the Eagles value him at nearer £20m.

£20 million I think I am going to be ill.

If he helps Palace get promoted this season he is worth a lot lot more than that to them, without him they have no chance of getting promoted.

For that reason I cannot see him going anywhere in January

Eh, he's talented for sure. Like Sterling, very young and raw. Their potential is great but for some of the prices quoted, not for me. We could easily be here in 5 yrs time asking where are they now questions. A similarish price to Bale - great bit of business and a no-brainer.

It depends how confident they are of getting promoted purely with him, and what bids they get.

Either:
£20m guaranteed (meeting their valuation) and the possibility of promotion & Premier League football.

or

£0 and a slightly higher possibility of Premier League Football & 6 months less on Zaha's contract & the possibility of a long term injury.

What would you choose if you were a Championship team that needed money to survive?

I think that's where a bid (within Palace's realistic expectations) with an immediate loan back to Palace will suit them more, whoever bids. This way Palace get the better of both worlds.

I certainly don't think he's worth £20m and if we were to get him for under £10m then he'd be better served staying at Palace for this season at the very least, if not the next as well.

As others have said, rightly IMO, he will be a cameo player for us this season. Would he be Bale's replacement if the Welsh wizard were to leave us this summer? (Not that I want the boy to leave and not that I think he will either.) I she better than Townsend, or moreover, any of the other Championship players that we bought at a young age that never really made, or had the chance, to make the grade? :coffee:

I mentioned in the "non Spurs Jan transfers" thread that I know Wilfried's brother. As I said in there from last speaking to his brother back in December his family are keen on him staying in London and that a move to Arsenal would be the "dream come true" scenario for him, preferring them to any other club. Other than Arsenal though he said his brother would join whoever the biggest club is as long as they can promise him football. He said his brother is not desperate to move either and will wait for the summer unless something amazing came along.

I can't comment on whether he'd be likely to join us, we've only been recently linked and I spoke to his brother about a month ago. Only thing is, he and his brothers are huge Gooners and as a result aren't keen on Spurs. So whether he'd join us is another thing. There are plenty of players who join clubs that are rivals to the ones they support though, so who knows. It's all about who puts in a bid and whether he's offered regular football.
