i love vdv also, but his set pieces have been fucking awful since he joined us!

it seems any player who joins us loses the ability to score free kicks

you forgot to add that they all lose the ability to beat the first man from corners as well

Step up Mr Vertonghen...

Love Rafa to bits and would be gutted to see him go...

JJ has already said that we are not actively looking to sell but if the right offer came in then we would consider it...

Well by all accounts he is a leader - let's hope so. But it seems that most of the best teams have a lot of natural leaders and to date that is one of the things that has been missing from Spurs. (Why is it Tottenham Hotspur but 'Spurs'?). Let's hope we end up with more leaders after the TW than we had before it!

But his set pieces don't clear the first man! Particularly corners!

That said, he is still world class and would be devastated to see him go

Without him tho we'll be back to Lennon taking corners! Which don't reach the first man, never mind clear them!

I think the situation with VDV is though we might sell him he is by no means on transfer block. If you break it down a little bit I think it makes sense.

1) We're looking to get younger and VDV is 29 and doesn't have a particularly impressive health record.
2) He doesn't have a 100% natural position in AVB's 4-3-3
3) There is some brewing interest from around the continent.

What this adds up to for me is that Levy would be willing to sell him if he got the right offer. In my opinion that offer would be in the 12-15 million quid range. There is in my opinion no way that we are shopping VDV merely willing to sell him if the right offer comes in. I love VDV just like everyone else but if you remove the emotional attachment from the equation 12-15 million quid would look pretty inviting for a 29 year old who doesn't quite fit the new system. I bet Levy would find that to be good business.

Oscar. Superstar in the making.

If we get this guy for big money then he'll need to be playing in order to continue his progreesion, and then I don't see Rafa sticking around. Sad to see him leave though

Maybe but will take him 6 months to settle , need to keep Rafa for at least one more season if we do bring a lot of young AM's in

I love Rafa, but i can understand it if he goes.
  1. First and foremost he simply dont fit to good in AVB's 4-3-3
  2. If there is one person in our squad thats not afraid to speak his mind if he get cut from the squad, its Rafa. And im sure AVB fear this bit a lot. The way the Dutch euros squad collapsed dont help Rafa one bit in this department.
  3. Levy Didt get us where we are today by letting players run out their contracts. If an over the odds bid come in for him im sure Levy would consider it. Rightly so i might add, we are Tottenham and cant just be throwing away money.
And for all we know Rafa might even fancy a move to be more with his lady?

Again, i love Rafa and he is class, but if he leaves im sure we have plans ready. Hope he stays though!

Think vdV is our most important player by some distance.

Even if we sign Oscar, we need to keep him for at least another year whilst the Brazilian settles in and finds his feet (like happened with Sandro).

Ok I was wrong about the Dutch thing. He is outspoken though.

Regards the Europa League, Tom Carroll had it in his contract that he couldn't be dropped in that competition. I mean WTF? Hardly proves anything. I just thought it SEEMED he couldn't be dropped at times.

Tom Carroll didn't play the last two games iirc , also he was our best attacking threat last season and if our playmaking wasn't so poor he wouldn't haves drop so deep last season but the fact that he was one of the players who ran the most didn't justify him being dropped modric played alot worse throughout the season and at one point people where considering playing Livermore and a tired parker

If we sell VDV I will lose a lot (read: fucking ALL) of the goodwill I'm currently feeling towards Levy, AVB and the club in general. If he's not hankering for a move (and he doesn't seem to be, despite what the Daily Mail tries to say every day) it will be a fucking crime.

He is by far and away our most important player, our only world class player, and a massive influence on the team and the fans. Losing him will be lke when we sold Waddle or Hoddle or Berbatov.

I will be so fucking ANGRY if this happens!

Away from the Rafa news which important trying to ignore...

Are people genuinely asking why Alan Brazil of talksport might promise something sensationalist and then not back it up? I'll give you a clue...the key word is talksport.

I do agree to a certain extent. I heard him say it though and he did say he'd find out on Wednesday. That means if he is going to spout off about it, it won't be until tomorrow?

Having said that, I don't believe he's got anything other than Graham Roberts news. Make of that what you will!

I'd be gutted to see Rafa go, I really like him as a player and as a bloke, but I do worry he might struggle in the AVB system :( I just hope he's willing to work for and gets the chance to try!

we're not in a position to upgrade, you can't upgrade on modric even if we wanted to.

I pretty much agree with that - how many better players are there in the world than Modric in that role? Not many! I'd love to think we can keep him, but I don't really believe it. If he goes and we get Moutinho I reckon that's not a bad result at all from what I've seen of him and Oscar could be pretty exciting too.

Unfortunately we're still going to be a stepping stone for some players for a while yet, we simply can't live with the money of City or the Chavs or the glamour of United, Real or Barca, so there will be times when we risk losing the big stars. We've done pretty well at getting over them in recent years by signing the next rising star on the cheap and as we climb the league and gain recognition there are fewer clubs who can bully us - Liverpool and Arsenal don't have much over us anymore!

Are we getting rid of all of our experienced premier league players? Gallas, King, Vdv, Modric. 1 thing Arry was spot on about IMO was the importance of premiership experience. The blend has to be right.

I do love VDV, but he does limit the way one can can have the team shape up. I thInk all the talk of him operating on the right of a front three is misguided. You need the players in the wide roles to be up and down and playing with pace, stamina, discipline, and it just isn't VDV's game.

I understand what you are saying but lets bare in mind VDV did play that position three times (Norwich
away, Chelsea, Swansea away) and all three times we were excellent as a team. We were better with VDV there than Chelsea were with the same formation against us with a quicker player there.

Suddenly, we have an awful lot of experts on AVB's 4-3-3. Whilst this was apparently the system he employed at Porto, is there any evidence he is indissolubly wedded to it? All i read about him informs me that he is a highly intelligent, thinking coach; do highly intelligent, thinking coaches adhere to one system regardless? I'd like to think that AVB will not play a 4-3-3 come hell or high water.

And Rafa's missus loves London, apparently.
