Only followed the match and here and it seemed the performance was on a par with Man U and Bayern? Lots of hoof ball? Dier and Sissoko plodding around in centre mid unable to move the ball with any zip and shitting themselves anytime the opposition even thought about pressing?

That's still part of the problem, though. Wolves we're carving us open as a team, every one of them knowing what they were supposed to be doing, on and off the ball. That's down to the coaching team, we never had that under Poch, and we still don't have it under Jose, (although it's early days and there are good signs). We can't rely on great individual goals to rescue us every time.
Still think there's a lot of revisionist history going on regarding Poch. Once he started fucking around with multiple systems we looked pretty disjointed and bad, but when he kept things simple in 15/16 and 16/17 we looked really well coached and had a very attractive, coherent style of play.

Haha, so you're gauging the performance according to the match thread?
Thats brilliant.

It wasn't quite as bad as that. I didn't think Dier and Sissoko were that bad.

Dier needs to get better on the ball, but both here and against Burnley, he has effectively snuffed out chances. Most importantly in cutting out long balls and counters by winning vital headers and covering well for the defence. Maybe we can improve on him for sure. But people are focusing on what he doesn't do compared to what he does do.
I said the same thing last week.

spot on, 15/16 and 16/17 we looked excellently coached and everyone to a man knew what they were doing, it just faded over time and changes of system etc didn't help. Jose said he needs time to actually work with the players so until then just grinding out results like it seems we did today is all we can expect really. love it.

Not long ago we were 11 points behind Chelsea and we were written off. We have blazed right up their ass and they must be twitchy now!

I think we got lucky that wolves weren't better in the final 3rd, there was a lot of last ditch defending, when players are throwing themselves in front of the ball it can go anywhere and we were lucky the ball bounced our way.
Well no, if you shape your body correctly you should have a pretty good idea of where the ball would bounce. Watch Atletico Madrid in their prime. They were 'lucky' every single game.

Also its not luck that wolves weren't very good in the final third, it's just how it is. If the game was played in reverse, and we were Wolves. I'd be annoyed in how blunt we were. I wouldn't feel hard done by the result.

Sure if that's what you want. But if we'd prioritised tapping it about over getting a result in a piss wet through Wolverhampton then they would have torn us to pieces.

As for Dier and Sissoko, everybody knows their limitations. But Ndombele was injured and the alternatives were Skipp and Winks. Both quite diminutive fellas who would have struggled with the direct nature of the game. Wolves aren't a short passing triangle team with low centre of gravity players. They switch the play, get it wide and cross it or cut inside. We needed physicality and aerial dominance.

Both of them did the job that was necessary today. It was a rare game suited to Dier.

The XG tells the story, which we won 0.99 to 0.72. We snuffed them out and took advantage of the chances we had.

People need to keep in mind Wolves are a very good team. They had a terrible start to the season. Like no win in 6, but since then their form would put them in 3rd. They are a very good team and a hard team to beat.

Since their promotion their record against the big 6 is W5 D6 L5. That's a really good record. A draw away from home would have been a good result. So I'm very happy to have won this.

Massive away win. From here our only away matches against top half clubs for the rest of the season are against Chelsea, Sheffield United, and Crystal Palace. Away matches against all the bottom 4 as well.

Lots of points to be had and a much easier second half of fixtures. Hopefully we’ll get much more comfortable as Mourinho integrates his ideas and style into the team. Onwards!

Best thing about the win was actually how few clear chances Wolves created despite controlling most of the game. That’s a real improvement in defensive organisation and shape

I disagree, I don't think players are able to get there bodies in a position that will allow them to know where the ball will go, last ditch defending is just that, you don't have time to think it's just about stopping the shot/cross. I still think we got lucky, but we did well to get enough players in and around the box to clear the 2nd ball.

You have a different idea about what a well-coached team looks like, then. Not to mention attractive. But if 'coherent' means that we would win the ball in the opponents penalty area and have it back in our own within three passes, then yes, we were often coherent.

Wolves xG was .72. They didn’t create a single really clear cut chance. That’s not luck it’s better defensive organisation and intensity
