No idea why they batted on to get a lead of 398 as 350 was more than enough. But, as you say, even with only 1 day washed out 3 more sessions should be more than enough

Could be squeaky bum time if it rains a bit longer and questions will be asked about that late declaration

I guess because it's not always a good idea to trust the weather forecast - which was not good for Saturday and they played an uninterrupted day. Looking at the weather radar just now, though, I'd be surprised if the same happened today!

Weather permitting, though, I reckon it'll all be over before tea tomorrow.

Apart from being a stalwart regards bowling I have more than a few memories of his batting being important to the outcome of some matches his fielding is not too shabby either.

England ODI squad Eoin Morgan, Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Sam Billings, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Joe Denly, Saqib Mahmood, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, Reece Topley, James Vince, David Willey

Obviously doesn't include the current Test squad players.

Even so, I'm wondering how Denly gets in there. Not exactly planning for the future, is it.

Superb achievement from Broad ?

Incredible to have two seam bowlers in the same side with 500+ test wickets.

You're 71-3, chasing 400, so no chance, and you try to swipe one into the middle of next week. Not a good way to get out!

Don't like to say it, but the Windies look like they don't much care. Run out going for a quick single, with rain about and over 300 needed?

Not with a bang but with a whimper really.

Good performance by England though, especially after the first match, and especially for Broad with 10 in the match and some runs.

Thanks due to them all for living in the bubble for so long (even Jofra!)

Bring on Pakistan.

England have named an unchanged 14-man squad for the first of their three Tests against Pakistan, which begins on Thursday, 5 August at Old Trafford.
It comprises the side who beat West Indies in the final Test at the same venue on Monday - plus Zak Crawley, Sam Curran and Mark Wood.
Four reserves - James Bracey, Ben Foakes, Jack Leach and Dan Lawrence - will also report to the Manchester venue.

I just watched a programme on the Botham Ashes in 1981, it was on bbc2 so will be available on iPlayer.

Obviously I new of the innings etc but I didn’t realise he was captain and then stepped aside after the first two disaster outs tests. A real zero to hero story.

What an amazing man he is.

I've seen that programme and it's really good, made me realise why my old man used to bang on about Botham so much. The thing I didn't realise was I assumed it was all based on the innings at Headingley, had no idea he took 6/95 in the first innings, also scored 50 when England batted, and then played an even better knock in the test at Old Trafford to score 100 odd as well.

Botham was one of the greatest sportsmen this country has ever produced. The nearest i've seen to him in the England team is Stokes and i'd argue that (currently) Botham was the better bowler by a fair margin, although Stokes can improve on that.

It'll be interesting to see where his stats end up in relation to Botham. Statistically and by the time they'd have both played the same number of test matches, I suspect Botham will be the better bowler and Stokes the better batsman.

Overall, if push came to shove, it's still Botham for me.

I used to love watching that Worcestershire team of his too. A really entertaining side with a lot of good players. I only caught the end of his career but you could see the positive effect he had on others of playing in the same team as him.

I met him once (if you could call it that), it was at Faro airport, towards the end of the 80s, but I couldn’t tell you the exact year, he was getting absolutely mobbed in the departures lounge. He didn’t seem to mind at all.

ODI v Ireland today. be good to see some of our squad players playing ODI cricket, given that all the test playing ODI players are being rested.

Particularly looking forward to seeing Tom Banton. Also happy to see Willey and Topley back around the squad, being a left-arm seamer myself we're all in the union together :)

127% this. It annoys me that people ever made the Flintoff comparison to be honest. Stokes is so much better than Freddie ever was, certainly with the bat. Having not seen Botham in his pomp sadly, I only had to go on the stories from the old man. I bought him a signed picture of the famous "batting pads and cigar" photo from the dressing room at Headingley for his 60th and immediately became his favourite son. I think Stokes will have the better batting record, I think they already have the same amount of Test centuries and Stokes' average is slightly better, but I cant see him ever reaching the bowling heights that Sir Ian did.

173 should not be overly taxing. Mind you, we've probably blown easier targets!

Good to see 5 for Willey.

At least Ireland made it a better target to chase than it could have been after 5 wickets down!
