Presumably money-spinning friendly tours are off the agenda this year - what's the point without packed houses and meet and greets etc?

So just treat the couple of extra games as ideal competitive season prep.

In the greater scheme of things, 3 extra matches, at least 2 of which will be against sides who’d struggle in league 2, shouldn’t hinder us across the season, especially given the lack of league cup matches for all European competitive sides. If anything we might find some rhythm and sharpness a bit earlier than we otherwise would have.

How lack of league cup matches for european competitive sides?

Wolves had to go through qualifying for EL this season , didn't do them much harm they were in with a chance of top four until the last few games , they are still in EL, win it and they get CL. Having to play the qualifiers just takes the place of the pre-season tour even if it is just after the start of the season and all players seem to say they would much rather be playing than training .
Coming home on the bus this season speaking to another fan he said he quite likes the Europa League you get to visit places you would never think of visiting normally. :)

Barring having to play AC Milan the rest are either average at best or terrible. The pick of the bunch are Basel, Wolfsburg and PSV (show as entering on round 3).

If there's seeding in the qualifiers we'd surely avoid all of them anyway?

Because of the condensed fixture list I believe clubs in Europe are not playing in the league cup.

If true (not doubting you), I find this incomprehensible. All of the top level clubs have enough squads including development players to be able to field at least an extra team. And think of the wonderful upsets that could be possible.

Hasn't it always been the case that teams in Europe enter the League Cup at a later round?

Yep - they enter at the 3rd rather than the 2nd round. But going by reporting in the Times, the most likely proposal is for Round 1 and Round 2 to take place during the September international break, and then for Round 3, Round 4 and the Quarter Final to take place in the same midweeks as European matches, with the big sides likely to field heavily rotated teams.

I'm disappointed that my heartfelt post above about Martinez crying on BBC1 wasn't received with more generosity of spirit from the forum, but on reflection, a day later, I kinda agree that he was just a c_unt

Wolves won 4 points in their first 6 games this season. You could argue that if they didn't have those qualifiers to navigate, they may have started the season better and finished in the top 4.

Fuck top 4. Europa league winners and FA cup winners. Thank you.
Give me these two and I can forgo Top-4 without batting an eyelid.

And know what? I would love for one of the English team to also win the CL but out of the Top 4 as well. That will surely fuck the 4th place team and I don't care who.

I listened to a podcast saying that the europa will be played on the same days as the CL next season. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
