I think it's also that we need to sell Aurier to free up a non-homegrown spot in the squad. Unless we can get a homegrown striker for a decent price we're limited on what signings we can make.

Don’t we have to sell either homegrown or
Overseas player to create space in our squad. Either that or have a player not registered to play?

Honestly keeping Aurier through deadline day should be seen as an absolute win.

9 games in 20 days is far, far too much for Doherty and Gedson alone (and Gedson will probably be playing CM in some of those matches).

We are entitled to believe the fair market value for Aurier is USD 20 million or more. The problem is that if there are no buyers who agree with us, then we will have the choice of accepting a lower fee or end up with Aurier in our squad next season. If we are OK with the last outcome then off course sticking to what we believe is the fair price is the right way about it.

I don´t understand why some are so eager to get rid of Aurier? Just because we´ve got Doherty?

In latter years, we´ve been at our best when we´ve had good/very good coverage on the wing/full backs positions. Especially Walker & Trippier on the right and Rose & Davies on the left. All the whining last season that we only had Aurier as a "proper" right back (mainly because KWP never would get a chance and later was loaned out).

And: that "Aurier is a catastrophe, a walking disaster giving away penalties every other minute" is just old crap and it´s getting very tiresome. Do you guys even watch our games? Do you understand football?. Last season he was one of the league´s leading right backs - just look at the stats ffs. My guess it´s the same people who "hated" Walker before he was sold, then moaned about him going to a rival. Then they let their shit-for-brains-sewage-overflow rain down on Trippier. Before they were stunned that we let him go so cheaply.

For a long season we need coverage in all positions. We need to rotate and rest players, we need to have decent backup players in case of injuries and bans. You want to have Tanganga or Foyth as first choice backup to Doherty? You really think they are better in that position than Aurier? Jeeeez ....

Sorry guys - had to let out some steam ...
Apart from the few who just love to hate him, I think the majority just want him sold ASAP to free up funds and a space in the squad to strengthen elsewhere.
Nothing personal, strictly business.

Seems pretty clear that Milan want him, and have not yet bought a less expensive alternative. I would guess that we will meet somewhere in the middle at some point.

It is obvious that we are trying to balance the squad while also balancing the books and our homegrown quota so Aurier is a key piece in this plan. I worry that until he goes, a striker might not be possible so really hope we see some movement on this soon.

Not if it means we don’t have funds to sign a striker until then, with that fixture load.

Serge deserves more appreciation that he gets. We've always had players in that spot that can either attack or defend, but not both.

Chances are Doherty will be no different, so no idea why people think we should palm him off like he's a liability.

IMO, he is. But also because we have Mourinho now, I would think he will grow under him in a full season. But he does seem to consider leaving for new environment too, so I guess is just a matter of agreement among all parties like how Eriksen was seen under Levy's eyes - you may leave if the right offer comes.

I think the issue we have is Aurier is down to the last 2 years of his contract and reports are he doesn't want to agree an extension so club are looking to sell whilst he still has higher value.

Doherty is clinical going forward, Aurier isn’t. His final ball is awful as is his decision making.

Like for like, he has scored more goals and had more assists than Trippier or Walker did, and yet he's in a world of his own for being picked apart for all he does.

He's scored some important goals and has a lot of mobility. If anything he's a hybrid of both and you can see why we went for him on that basis.

When all our width comes from Aurier by the law of averages he’s going to create and/or score goals. However, we set up to play counter attacking football and need to be clinical going forward. He’s nowhere near good enough going forward and is prone to stupid brain farts in defence.

The gulf in class between Walker and Aurier is astronomical. Trippier’s pants.

If want to sign a foreign player we need to sell a foreign player.
My point was we have 25 players already in our squad so to buy any player we need to sell a player be he homegrown or overseas. Obviously it would depend on who we are buying as to whether we sell an overseas or homegrown player.

For UEFA purposes we have at this time 25 players who need to be registered, so any signing regardless of age or hg status would require us to make a sake. Additionally, we are at our maximum for non HGs in kind with UEFA rules therefore would need to sell one to buy one.

Matty Cash just joined Villa for £16m and he has never in stepped foot in the prem

We are well within our right to hold out for around £20m imo.
Although it also highlights what a bargain we got for Doherty
