This is what happens when you buy a replacement before selling the player

Conversely, if we hadn't signed a right-back with less than two weeks before the season starts because we were waiting to sell Aurier first, you know full well that the pitchforks would be out from all corners of the fanbase. You can't really win either way unless you can sort out an in and an out simultaneously.

We've done it the right way IMO.

I don't understand how football fans can be mad at strengthening the team first and sorting the balance sheet out later.

Oh I agree with you both - just saying that this was very much foreseeable as soon as Doherty was signed, considering Milan were already being very stingy.
I don't think the Doherty signing had anything to do with it.

Milan don't seem to have the money. They're also supposed to be signing Bakayoko and aren't seemingly making progress on that front either.

I don't see Aurier staying as a huge deal unless it definitely means we can't sign a striker. Plenty of games to go around and he's not a horrendous player, i'd be fine with having him as a backup until we find a buyer.

I don´t understand why some are so eager to get rid of Aurier? Just because we´ve got Doherty?

In latter years, we´ve been at our best when we´ve had good/very good coverage on the wing/full backs positions. Especially Walker & Trippier on the right and Rose & Davies on the left. All the whining last season that we only had Aurier as a "proper" right back (mainly because KWP never would get a chance and later was loaned out).

And: that "Aurier is a catastrophe, a walking disaster giving away penalties every other minute" is just old crap and it´s getting very tiresome. Do you guys even watch our games? Do you understand football?. Last season he was one of the league´s leading right backs - just look at the stats ffs. My guess it´s the same people who "hated" Walker before he was sold, then moaned about him going to a rival. Then they let their shit-for-brains-sewage-overflow rain down on Trippier. Before they were stunned that we let him go so cheaply.

For a long season we need coverage in all positions. We need to rotate and rest players, we need to have decent backup players in case of injuries and bans. You want to have Tanganga or Foyth as first choice backup to Doherty? You really think they are better in that position than Aurier? Jeeeez ....

Sorry guys - had to let out some steam ...

It's been clarified by ITK that he wants to go and we are happy to sell.

That I know. I just don´t get the "get rid of him now" comments. He also wanted - reportedly - to go last summer. Still stayed, and had his by far best season with us.

My point is: to just sell Aurier, and especially for a low price, is not good enough. If we do sell him, we desperately need to have a proper, quality right back as a replacement for him. Doherty is NOT an Aurier replacement: if anything, he´s the replacement for Trippier/KWP/the other right back.

I´m OK with Aurier leaving. I´m not OK with us only having Doherty for that position. And, no: Tanganga, Foyth, Dier, Toby are not right backs. They can do a job there for the odd match, but that is not and never will be their best nor natural position.

Considering that we presumably need to sell before we buy, I would easily sell Aurier so that we can bring in a new striker.

Sounds likely and why we haven't moved for a striker yet. Surely though if we can buy a striker for £15 to £20 million we would do it though. Unless we are aiming for a £0 net spend again. Or we could just be trying to get clubs to reduce the prices they want for their players by saying we've no cash.

I think it's also that we need to sell Aurier to free up a non-homegrown spot in the squad. Unless we can get a homegrown striker for a decent price we're limited on what signings we can make.

As well as freeing up a homegrown spot I think Aurier’s sale is in order to bring us back to breakeven after Doherty purchase. If went and bought a striker for £15m and couldn’t shift Aurier we’re suddenly £30m down. I think our budget is even stricter than normal, frustrating but might as well accept it.

But it is not old crap. He is not a terrible right back for sure, but for me it is indisputable that he has lapses of concentration, or rushes of blood to the head, and makes mistakes that lead to goals. At the end of the season when we only conceded 3 goals in 6 games, 2 of those goals were directly down to him (vs Arsenal at home and away at Newcastle). I'd happily keep him to compete with Doherty, but if the player wants out, and another club wants him (which appears the case with Aurier and Milan) then we should sell.

Agree, no rush to get him out the door but he will know he's now 2nd choice and so will likely want to leave, if it wasn't covid times and we had the money to keep him as a very good 2nd choice then i'd want us to keep him for sure but because of covid we need to sell him to raise funds to buy other positions.

Matty Cash just joined Villa for £16m and he has never in stepped foot in the prem

We are well within our right to hold out for around £20m imo.

Exactly. But many on here would rather we adopt a strategy where we sell unwanted players at the buyers price but sign new players at the sellers price.

Thank fuck none of these people are in charge of the club ?

Somebody said we should take £10m for Aurier, I just don't understand the mindset. Sort of guys that'd be won over by this guy's negotiating tactic:
