Well this is the problem, there's no one that ticks all the boxes. The natural leaders have all either been here for five minutes, are out the door or on the bench, while the first-choice starters who have been at the club a reasonable time don't seem like captain material. We've engineered a situation where, for various reasons, our five most obvious leaders all have major question marks over them and none seem like viable candidates for captain next year.I like Dier and Hojbjerg, and even Davies.
But, Hojbjerg looks likely to leave, and Dier and Davies both look destined to reserve roles.
I think Ange will count on their leadership, if they stay, but none are really in contention to be captain.
Same with Bentancur - who I see a lot of people naming - he is training away from the squad, and while he too can provide leadership when he is around, I don't think he is in a position to show that leadership to Ange.
So we either give it to someone unsuited (Son) and trust that the squad doesn't need that sort of leader, or throw it at someone who can grow into the role (Bentancur, Porro, Maddison, possibly Skipp). Or just sign ownership of the stadium over to Kane to get him to stay.
