I like Dier and Hojbjerg, and even Davies.

But, Hojbjerg looks likely to leave, and Dier and Davies both look destined to reserve roles.

I think Ange will count on their leadership, if they stay, but none are really in contention to be captain.

Same with Bentancur - who I see a lot of people naming - he is training away from the squad, and while he too can provide leadership when he is around, I don't think he is in a position to show that leadership to Ange.
Well this is the problem, there's no one that ticks all the boxes. The natural leaders have all either been here for five minutes, are out the door or on the bench, while the first-choice starters who have been at the club a reasonable time don't seem like captain material. We've engineered a situation where, for various reasons, our five most obvious leaders all have major question marks over them and none seem like viable candidates for captain next year.

So we either give it to someone unsuited (Son) and trust that the squad doesn't need that sort of leader, or throw it at someone who can grow into the role (Bentancur, Porro, Maddison, possibly Skipp). Or just sign ownership of the stadium over to Kane to get him to stay.

Ali Gold has an interesting bit in his latest podcast (around the 30-35 min mark) singling out Bissouma and the leadership he's been showing behind the scenes (and how Ange seems to be singling him out as key to his plans).

Between this and how much love he's been given by the social team, I'm thinking Yves might be stepping up into a vice captain role - and who knows if there's a ton of turnover beyond Lloris in terms of the existing leadership (Kane, Dier, Davies, PEH).

If Kane leaves I think the idea of Davies as club captain with Bissouma as vice captain stepping up when Davies not on the pitch is one I could support.
Davies should be no where near captain, it has to be a player who's a guaranteed starter. If not Kane then Bentancur and Biss is my bet. If he wasn't such a new signing I'd also put Maddison in with a shout for Captain or VC as part of our new chapter.

Understand the Bentancour shouts, but he’s not going to be anywhere near even a training pitch before the season starts. Don’t see how Ange can assess his leadership abilities when he’s working on his own in the gym. If it’s not HK, Bissouma is the next logical choice for me.

The problem then is, what if Bentancour comes back and absolutely crushes it? Do you take the armband away from Bissouma half-way through the season? Can’t see that working either.

Glad it’s not my decision to make to be honest. At least we know it won’t be Kaboul…

Looking more likely Kane leaves this window, with PEH and lloris leaving, Dier likely to be seeing out the remainder of his contract and Davies doubtful to be a starter it might be time for a new era. New manager, new captain, new vice captain. New leadership group. I don't see a natural choice in the current squad and this may be symptomatic of modern football. Stroppy primadonnas like Bruno Fernandes are being made captains nowadays rather than authoritarian, hard man types.

If we pick a 'lead by example' type, an extrovert, a probable starter then an outside shout could be Pedro Porro.

I do feel though than Sonny has the respect of everyone and will get the gig

Has to be a nailed on starter, and if Davies is a nailed on starter we've majorly fucked up this transfer window.

It has to be Sonny, ticks all the boxes.

Senior pro, Captains national team, Long time servant, actually wants to be at the club, everybody loves him.
Can you actually see him shouting at players if he has to and giving out orders? I can't, he's too nice. As you say "everybody loves him" which would make it impossible to have a go at his team mates and as I said in a previous thread I believe it would effect his form.

Did you see the row he had with Lloris on the documentary?

I mean it’s not like either of them really ‘out-captained’ the other one, for me Lloris goes after Sonny and gives a clear loud message that he isn’t any different from anyone else, and that he tracks his runner, like Harry, like Lucas…

Son squeaks at him a bit, then sits fuming 🤷🏻‍♂️.

There’s been a fair few games where Son has let his head drop, and if you let yours drop, you aren’t going to rouse others. He’s a great player, I love him, but he’s not a captain for me personally. I’ll support him either way but I think there are better candidates.

I also think there were large periods of time last season where he should have been benched more, and he wasn’t, being a captain possibly makes that even less likely if he has another bad season.

Can you see Sonny digging someone out for not tracking back?

The only way Son works as a captain is if he’s basically the interface between AP and the players, which given his seniority, I could see happening.

We’d still need someone to dish out bollockings and praise good play throughout the 90+5 though. Maybe that could be the VC’s job?

Hoping Kane stays, even if only for one more season. Him being captain for his last season would be fitting.....

If they stay and play and Kane goes the obvious captains for me are PEH or Dier. Both are strong personalities and vocal. However if all three move on then I would pick Maddison, he's intelligent and can lead by example as Kane has done.
Hojbjerg and Dier will hopefully be no where near the match day squad let alone captaining it

I wouldn't be so sure. If he looks like keeping Ndombele and Lo Celso you don't know what plans he has for the team and who he wants to go or stay.

Maddison on Bissouma:

Against West Ham it looked like the early seeds of a partnership with Yves Bissouma being formed, could that be an important relationship this season?

Yeah if we’re playing together. Bissouma’s a very very good player. I played against him when he was at Brighton and he probably didn't play as much as he’d like to have done last season. But there's a top player in there, and maybe that would have been a good answer for the last question, he’s surprised me a little bit. He’s a leader, he talks.

For someone who’s only been at the club for a year and didn’t maybe have the best first season as he would have hoped. He’s very demanding and very vocal, and there’s a brilliant player in there so I’m looking forward to seeing how that partnership can go.

If Kane leaves there is only one player that is being profiled as a leader from the manager and players. So it would be a safe bet to expect Bissouma to become captain if Kane leaves.
