Whilst he needs to improve his decision making and composure, he wasn't helped out by the tactics, those around him and the manager last season. After a couple of months of looking basically our only attacking threat, teams put up the brick wall, double marked him and forced him inside into traffic. Here he had the option of an incredibly conservative pass, or to have a shot. Oh no wait, actually some people will have you believe there was a mythical pass on to Soldado every single time (just threading it through half a dozen defenders)...

This is then where others should be stepping up to the plate and us varying our game a bit instead of sending everything through him. But the game plan never really changed.

The majority of the shots usually happened when things got a bit desperate, later in games when we were struggling for a result and then when he came back from injury and felt he had something to prove. The coaches just need to get in his ear and calm him down. He has shown he has ability to pick someone out, I actually think he played some of our best passes last season (Picked out Paulinho in our first Europa game, Paulinho chance vs. Chelsea where he sold 3 players a dummy, Holtby goal in the Europa). He just needs experience and a bit more tactical direction and help from team mates, so he isn't the only attacking threat.

I always thought Andros was better than Ronaldo. Glad to be proved right by non contextualised facts........

and thats why stats mean absolutely fuck all without context.

I agree, stats can be useful but they very rarely tell the whole story. One of the problems in todays football is that some fans use facts as the bible and use them to make whatever point they are pushing.

I really want him to become good, but if he has another wasteful season of only being able to produce a goal every 50 shots I'm done hoping for him.

Kid needs to pick his head up and realize that their are other extremely skilled guys on this team like Eriksen and Lamela that he should be looking to get the ball too.

I think Townsend has all the physical and technical ingredients required to be a very top level winger. He is fast, he has energy, he is technically good with the ball on either foot so that he can go past his man with skill or/and speed.

But I think he lacks the one thing that will hold him back from ever reaching that level. He does not have the right mentality or determination to reach that level. When he plays, he plays like 1 man out of 11 on the pitch rather than as part of a team. It also looks like he doesnt feel he needs to contribute to the defensive side of the game by slowly jogging back when he loses the ball. He continually opts for the hollywood option rather than playing through team mates and i think he needs to go back to basics with his shooting. When he's on the bench he is laughing an d joking and not even watching the game, using the time to pinpoint weaknesses to exploit.

The difference between Ronaldo, Bale and players of that ilk is simply an unquestionable, unrestrained, inexhaustible desire to be better today than you were yesterday and better still tomorrow.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Townsend and nothing would please me more than seeing him progress into a really top player as his potential would imply but Pochettino can only help him so far. If he really wants to hit top level he needs to realize that improvements are made in increments and by concentrating on the pitch, on the bench and in training. I unfortunately don't think he has that level of focus in him and think he will be sold by the end of the year.

I can not believe that he was 56% accurate

100% of the 56% of shots he had on target were straight at the keeper. ;)

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

I don't rate him, but trying to be optimistic as the new season is just around the corner. Maybe he'll be better on the left as he can't shoot for shit so him cutting inside is pointless.

Townsend's only Spurs goal in the last 2 years came from a cross and his only Spurs assist in the last 2 years came from a shot.
He got an assist last year in the PL and he got goals and an assist iirc in Europa last season:wacky:

Of course worth noting today was the third time he completed 90mins this calendar year

He lacks intelligence and thats something I'm not convinced he'll be able to develop.

Was v frustrating tonight constantly running at a 2nd string championship side (they made 9 changes to weekend) yet still couldn't get his head up and pick out a cross.

It's almost like he's seen the goals that Bale used to score and thinks "yeah, I can do that..."

He is an athlete. Not a footballer, the amount of times last night he passed the ball to absolutely no one, or was in a nice position and doesn't look up, just runs in a straight line fast.

I felt for Soldado a bit in the end as it must be completely soul destroying knowing you are not going to get a pass or a decent cross.

But he did actually put in some decent crosses and nobody got on the end of them. I get frustrated at his wayward shooting as anyone but I credit him for being positive and trying to make something happen. Our captain on the other hand........

Plays with a totally unwarranted chip on his shoulder. Never seen somebody so arrogant considering they're rank average.

I'll never get over the fact we turned down bids of over £10m for him.

I'd call him David Bentley mk II, but at least Bentley was good at set pieces.
