Napoli confirm approach to Spurs over manager Andre Villas-Boas
Thursday 23 May 2013 10:06 am
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has confirmed the club have made an approach to Tottenham for their manager Andre Villas-Boas.
The Italian giants, who finished second in Serie A last season, are on the lookout for a replacement for Walter Mazzarri after he opted to walk away last week.
And speaking to Portuguese paper DN, De Laurentiis confirmed he had made Spurs boss Villas-Boas a top target.
‘Yes,’ he replied when asked if an approach had been made.
‘There is a very tempting argument to hire a young coach here.’
It is not clear whether Spurs have entertained the offer from Napoli, but it is thought that they are keen to hang on to the 35-year-old despite his failure to land Champions League football last season.
Napoli are also believed to be considering ex-Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo as an alternative, while Rafa Benitez has previously been linked with the role.
Whoever takes over will have the imminent task of fending off Manchester City who are set to step up their interest in striker Edinson Cavani in the next few weeks.

Well... If Levy continues to fart around on transfers, why wouldn't AVB move on? Without serious investment we're not going to inprove on our 5th place finish...

From that paragon of all that is true The Metro.

Got to say that I usually would agree with you about it being The Metro, but there is a quote, but I must admit it's only about a 'young coach'.

I'm not after quick fixes (God knows I've watched Spurs for long enough), but I do want someone here for the long term. He will make mistakes and the club as a whole will make mistakes, but we need to progress and learn together imo.

Edit - did I not see a report/ITK saying that Spurs wanted to negotiate a new deal with AVB taking it to 5 years also?

Nothing to worry about, the Napoli president is taking a scatter gun approach to getting a new manger.

I quite like this personally. Gives AVB some muscle in the board room

"If you don't back me I've got clubs who will"

This is the source of the story :

http://www.dn.pt/desporto/interior.aspx?content_id=3234068

Translation using Google :

"Aurelio De Laurentiis, president of Naples, is the coach of Tottenham the priority option to succeed Walter Mazzarri.

André Villas-Boas is the first option of Naples to replace Walter Mazzarri, found the DN from a source close to the process.

Aurelio De Laurentiis, president of the Italian club have made known to people nearby who dreams of hiring the Portuguese coach of Tottenham after Mazzarri (may be on his way to Inter Milan) announced it will not continue in Neapolitan Club in 2013/14.

Despite the interest of Naples, runner-up in Serie A, André Villas-Boas will hardly Tottenham, though Aurelio de Laurentiis is considering presenting "arguments tempting" to hire young coach, you know the DN."

So no actual quote from De Laurentiis that he is actually interested in AVB, just that he is tempted to hire a young coach. The whole AVB angle seems to have come from the tabloids best friend "a source close to ..."

Which would probably be met by the response of "if that is the way you feel, you can go".

A shrewder man, would just say to Levy and Lewis, that despite interest from other clubs, he is not interested in going because he wants to make this club great again and that in order to achieve this goal he will need them to back him and vision for our team.

Well obviously I didn't mean he'd get his bollocks out on the board room table and say

"GIVE ME SOME FUKIN MONEY OR THESE ARE GOING IN YOUR GOB"

He'd be more constructive, it's the measure of the man he is.

I would find it odd if Napoli weren't interested in him, to be fair.

But I think AVB has done his tenure with knee-jerk owner. He made his cash and now is in a good position. I seriously doubt he's going to consider Italy as a good place to go, considering the merry-go-round approach the league has to managers. I would think he would be very ruminative before a move to that league. Not that it's beyond the possibility as two of the last three managers at Napoli, Reja and Mazzarri, have been given a lot of time by Series A standards. But I still believe he is interested in a project and there's more of that here than at Napoli. Also, he can't stick it to Roman as well in Italy ;)

While I doubt its going to give him as much leverage with player signings as some might imagine, it will help him with the contract extension that is being rumored to be in negotiation. And I bet his opinion on Baldini just became much more important :)
