Does it fall apart though? It tells you something important: that a team is good at creating chances but shit at scoring them.

Falls apart from a 'Should have scored' perspective. Also doesn't say if the chance was due to the attacking team creating the chance on their own or if a fuck up by the defending team. There's just too many variables to be taken as seriously as it currently does.

Not really. If a team has an xg of 2 but they are all from defenders then that will say that team should've scored two, but that would not be the case because those chances fell to players who aren't as good at finishing as attackers, so that's where it falls apart.

I think xG tells you that there are only a few players that outperform it by a considerable amount. Harry Kane last season performed under his expected xG.

I don't want to go into it but xG doesn't fall down anywhere. If you want it to tell you everything it won't do that. It works as a general guide on how to judge performances. There can be outliers but that happens in statistics.

My issue with xG is it comes down to shots at goal. There were many dangerous situations we played ourselves in to that did not end in a shot or crosses that got cut out.

Yeah fair enough. I agree to an extent.

I reckon in a close game like today it's relatively meaningless, but over a longer period it can really show some interesting trends. Like whether a team is significantly over or underperforming (which is not easily shown through other stats).

Defo needs to not be used religiously and should be taken with a pinch of salt, though

That is the type of game in our past we’d draw or lose, brilliant brilliant 3pts against a tough away team.

Antonioooo is so world class love wins like this, we played pretty well but it was also very hard fought and great game management especially towards the end.

Thought we played quite well, we looked short on confidence but decent overall. Really good result against a good team.

Im sorry but some of you must of been watching a different game ie Sessy was class tonight created chances was up and down and fully deserved MOM well done you g man class. Look back over the last two seasons and see how many of the top six sides come away with points. Fucking great effort Spurs well done to you all!!! COYS

XG also doesn’t take into the account on game situations, a team 2-0 up may sit back and concede a more chances because the losing team will be much more attacking, therefor making the xG higher, but doesn’t necessarily mean the game was as close as the XG will make out

Not really. Spurs have "sat back" for most of this season but our XG has usually been better than most of our opponents because we only "allow" low XG attempts while fashioning high XG attempts (from fewer attacks).

Makes me laugh people moaning about XG - as if our club (and all clubs) don't use spend tons of money and manpower on statistical analysis. For a very good reason :ROFLMAO:

It's like people moaning about algorithms back at the start of the millenium "Google? It'll never take off" "Facebook - who cares"?

One of those games that I felt we were in control, including without the ball. Didn't feel lucky. Didn't feel like we were hanging on.

Absolutely loved Dier celebrating Doherty's defending like a goal.

Very good 3 points that.

A lot of quality lacking going forward, but the defensive performance and desire to get the three points was there.

You can say a lot of things about this team, but you absolutely cannot say they don't care.

Yeah the only period I felt worried was when Brighton pressed towards the end of the first half and had a bunch of long range shots. The only truly good chance they had all game was the header that went over the bar.

In the second half I can't recall a single clear cut chance at all and barely even any shots. Just that one menacing run from (can't believe I'm gonna say it) the Japanese lad.
